SECOND SUNDAY of ADVENT (YEAR B) 7th December 2008
Dear Parishioners,
The Liturgy of the Second Sunday of Advent introduces us to the figure of St John the
Baptist. He is that joyful messenger to Zion who shouts without fear: ‘Here is your
God. Here is the Lord coming with power!’ May we take to heart John’s call to
repentance so that our joy may be evident to all whose lives we share.
Congratulations and thanks to all of you for your help in making our Christmas Fayre
such a happy and successful occasion. The monies from the Raffle and the sales at the
Fayre itself have raised £1,900. Another £1,000 has been raised from the CAFOD
lunches. Along with private donations, we will be able to forward a cheque to CAFOD
for over £4,000.Thanks to all who organised the Fayre it was a lovely occasion. A list of
prize winners for the Raffle will be available.
This weekend we are distributing the second edition of the ‘Augustinian’, our Parish
magazine. It costs £1.00. It is well worth reading as it reflects something of the rich and
varied life of our Parish. Thank you to Bernard McHale, our editor.
Please note that we have a Deanery Meeting on Tuesday. Therefore, there will be only
one Mass at 9.45am on Tuesday-Rosary 9.25am.
We look forward to the children of St Augustine’s School performing their Nativity
Plays in Church on Wednesday and Thursday of this week at 7pm. All are welcome.
The Dominion Car Park has been requested to remain open.
Do please try to attend the Penance Service for Advent on Thursday 18th December at
7.30pm. One of the Priests from Our Lady of the Wayside will be here to help with
Confessions.
On Sunday afternoon at 3.00pm ‘F.I.R.’s’, ‘Friends in Retirement’ are holding a Carol
Service in Church. You are welcome to attend.
Thank you to all who attended the Blessing of the Crib last Sunday afternoon in Mell
Square. It was followed by the organist, Ronnie Shillingford, giving us an inspiring
organ recital; and finally our thanks to Mothers’ Prayers members for providing such
lovely refreshments.

Disturb us, Lord, when
we are too well pleased with ourselves,
when our dreams have come true
because we have dreamed too little,
when we arrived safely
because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when
with the abundance of things we possess
we have lost our thirst
for the waters of life;
having fallen in love with life,
we have ceased to dream of eternity
and in our efforts to build a new earth,
we have allowed our vision
of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
to venture on wider seas
where storms will show your mastery;
where losing sight of land,
we shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
the horizons of our hopes;
and to push into the future
in strength, courage, hope, and love.
Please pray for: Dorothy Phillips, John West, Malcolm Kelly, Bob Morgan,
Ernest Edwin Phipps, Gordon Sutton, Mary Eileen Lunn and Patrick Brennan whose
anniversaries are at this time.
