THE BIG MELT - CLIMATE JUSTICE TOUR - Find out about climate change in the
'roof of the world' and what it means for Australia and Asia.
Speakers:

Pemba Dorje Sherpa, holder of the world record for the fastest climb of Mount
Everest, talk about his experience of global warming in the Himalayas.

Prakash Sharma, environmental lawyer and activist, Pro Public Nepal.
Global warming is already having a big impact on Mount Everest and the Himalayas.
Glaciers are melting creating floods and danger for the local people. But the big melt also
means a big dry as these 'water towers' of Asia lose their capacity to provide water to the
giant rivers in the summer months. Eventually rivers like the Ganges in India and the Yellow
River in China will lose their dry season flow and the billion people in these river basins will
lose their water security.
The tour will coincide with the release of the new Friends of the Earth report: High Stakes –
Climate change, the Himalayas, Asia and Australia.
Hosted by Friends of the Earth Australia, with support of The Intrepid Foundation, the Uniting Church in

TOWARDS CATASTROPHIC CLIMATE CHANGE
Speaker: David Spratt, co-author of Climate Code Red will share the latest evidence on the
dire need for more urgent action on climate change. Our Government is forging ahead with a
vastly inadequate response. In the lead up to Copenhagen, WCAN believes all Australians
should understand the realities and speak out against our Government’s apathetic response.
How far are we from the point of no return when runaway climate heating and further
dramatic consequences become unstoppable?
There is a high potential for us to lose control of escalating climate change, as one event
compounds the next in our complex and fragile ecosystem. As the Arctic warms, ice shelves

melt, the tundra warms and the permafrost of thawing peat releases previously trapped
methane, a green house gas 20 times more powerful than CO2. Sea levels rise causing
massive dislocation of people around the globe, but well before that, water will invade the
porous rocks that hold fresh water and wreck the water supplies of many major cities, already
hit by falling water tables due to drought. Now is the time for us to confront this reality – not
10 or 20 years from now when we may have reached the point of no return, when runaway
climate change and its consequences become unstoppable.
