A significant segment of this course draws from learners’ previous experiences, making the learning more meaningful and culturally relevant for First Nations learners. Description: Advanced Health Access English 043 is designed to prepare students for entry into health care programs, as well as vocational, career, and technical programs, or for entry directly into the workforce. Students will use the writing process to write paragraphs, letters, memos, essays, and a research report. Core skills in critical reading, comprehension, grammar, and medical vocabulary will be developed. Written assignments will be produced using a word processor. Students will participate in group work activities and oral presentations and in the critical analysis of health-related reading selections and media articles. Using learner portfolios, students will have opportunities to explore creatively and reflect critically on their own learning journeys, and create learning artifacts they can bring forward to further study. Level: Advanced Prerequisites: Provincial English 030 or assessment and placement at the advanced level. Oral Presentation: Students will make an oral presentation that supports ideas about a health-related issue with visuals and props in the form of a visual display or slide presentation; Students engage in self / peer evaluation using selfquestioning and completion of an oral presentation checklist; discuss impressions with instructor and peers; Students prepare questions, listen to and ask for examples and details of interviewees; incorporating comments into subsequent oral or written presentation. Personal Health Journal Entries: Students will participate in a written dialogue with their instructor to generate and develop ideas based on guided questions, and will practice a number of idea generating techniques: brainstorming, conceptmapping, rich pictures, etc. Students will be asked to review the instructor’s feedback, revising and reworking their first draft again to develop their ideas further; Responding to Readings: Students will write paragraphs on topics related to readings, enabling them to practice drawing on the storyline and extending it to a theme in everyday life; Sentence Skills Assignments: Students will complete a series of sentence skillsbuilding assignments to develop confidence writing complex sentences with increased accuracy. Practice will be given in combining sentences using adverbial and coordinating conjunctions, subordination, semicolon, misplaced and dangling modifiers, and parallel structure. Students will also gain practice in editing for errors in punctuation, capitalization, and sentence fragments; Essay Writing: Page 3 of 4 NWCC Advanced English 043 identify, discuss and evaluate literary elements (plot, theme, character, setting, conflict) in works in various media (e.g. print, film, audio) analyze and respond to editorial comment, magazine articles, technical or investigative writing, or advertising gather research and organize it into a research paper using an appropriate documentation style (e.g. APA, MLA, or Chicago) understand and avoid plagiarism Students will write at least two expository (explanatory and persuasive) essays; Novel Study: Students will read and analyze a novel. Students will be asked to choose a novel study project that appeals to their personal talents and interests; expressed through audiovisual, written, or creative presentation; Research Report: Students will research and write about a healthrelated issue in a 750 word research report.
