Senior English Mt. Gilead High School Rules and Procedures Mrs. Gerber Classroom Rules: 1. Treat people, furnishings, and objects they way you would want to be treated- with respect! 2. Come to class on time and prepared to learn. This means you must be in the room when the bell rings. Running down the hall yelling “I’m not late” does not qualify as being on time. Your third tardy will result in a detention. 3. Bring all materials to class: writing utensil, paper, homework, and your textbook. You will need to use an oops pass to retrieve these items from your locker should you show up without them. 4. Be seated immediately. Wandering around the room to talk to your friends is not permissible. 5. Attend to personal needs before coming to class. Hall passes are given in emergency situations only. 6. Talk only when appropriate. If you talk when the teacher is talking you will miss valuable information, disrupt your peers learning, and lose participation points. 7. Plagiarism and cheating are not tolerated and will result in a zero on the assignment. 8. No put downs of yourself or anyone else. 9. Do your best and always ask for help. I am here to support you, so make sure you ask questions and seek assistance when needed. I want you to have a great senior year. Consequences: 1. 2. 3. 4. Verbal or written warning. Not all violations will get a first warning. Detention. Call home. Office referral. Class Procedures: Substitutes: I expect that you treat any substitute with the utmost respect and courtesy. Your actions are a reflection of you, the school and me. Listen to and follow any requests made by the substitute, even if it is not the way we “normally” do things. Do not argue with, harass, or even look funny at the sub. Any names left by the sub for poor behavior will receive an automatic detention, no questions asked. Oops Passes: You will be given three “oops” passes at the beginning of each quarter. You can earn a fourth if you bring in a box of tissues by August 22. The “oops” passes can be used in order to hand in homework one day late for full credit or as a hall pass. Do not lose your passes. You will not be given replacements. If you need to go to the restroom you without an “oops” pass, you will be assessed a tardy for missing class time. After your third tardy a detention will be issued. You have five minutes between classes to use the restroom and go to your locker, plan accordingly. To use an “oops” pass you need to fill it out completely and staple it to late work. You can turn in any unused oops passes at the end of the quarter for extra credit (2 points each). Late Homework: You can turn in homework for full credit up to one day late with an “oops” pass. If you do not have an “oops” pass, 50% will be taken off your score the first day and no credit will be given after that. For major assignments, such as papers and projects, you cannot use “oops” passes. Your grade will be reduced by 25% for each day late. If you are absent the day that one of the major quarterly projects are due, your grade will still be reduced by 25% unless you have a professional excuse. All planned absences must turn in assignments before the absence. You can always email assignments to me at jgerber@mgschools.org. Absences: Be responsible for your missed work. Show me your absence slip the day you return. If you do not, I will assume it is unexcused and you will receive no credit for missed work. All work during planned absences must be collected before the absence and completed when you return (this includes college visits). Check the absence binder and pick up any assignments from the bin under the window. Assignments are due according to the number of days absent. Example: if you miss school on Monday, all work is due on Wednesday. If you miss school on Monday and Tuesday, all work is due on Friday. This includes making up tests. You must schedule the time outside of class to take missed tests. IMPORTANT: if you are absent the day before a long term assignment is due (paper, test, project), you are still responsible for the assignment the day you return. Plagiarism/Cheating: Plagiarism is “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work” (Dictionary.com). Plagiarism and cheating will both result in a zero on the assignment. In written assignments, you must give credit for all borrowed ideas, including paraphrased ideas, and direct quotes. Copying homework, written assignments, independent assignments, or test answers is considered cheating. Grades: Grades in this class are weighted in order to reflect student progress and understanding. Tests, quizzes, papers, and projects are the truest reflection of a student’s actual learning and they will make up 70% of the class grade. 10% 20% 30% 40% Participation Homework and Classwork Projects and Papers Tests and Quizzes
