Scandinavian Flat Plane carving classes at LOV
Want to start a new hobby and learn about carving some
caricatures, Yule Nissans, or some Santa’s? Twice a year
at LOV, there is an up to 5 day course available to learn
about Scandinavian flat plane carving. In your first 5 days,
you can learn to carve a face and go home with a couple
of finished pieces! Tools and supplies can be purchased
there from the instructor Joel Hull. While the class is going
on, there also is a rosemaling class being taught as well,
so many have a partner in the other class. The cost of the
class is only $20 a day (not including supplies or tools),
plus the lodging at LOV. Joel Hull is a retired teacher;
graduate of Lehigh University and a student of Harley
Refsal since 1991. He teaches adult education classes at
Suffolk Community College and seminars at the Fletcher
Farm School in VT. Joel is the recipient of the Gold Medal
of Excellence in Woodcarving at Vesterheim, the
Norwegian Museum in Decorah, Iowa. He is President of
his local woodcarver’s club and writes for Woodcarving
Illustrated Magazine. The next week of classes is from
October 13th to the 17th, with arrival Sunday afternoon or
evening on the 12th. Come on out and join us!!
Greetings!

Sons of Norway Unveils New Mission
Statement
As many of you may know, one of the hotly debated issues
at this year's International Convention was our Mission
Statement. In fact, there were two separate resolutions this
year that hoped to adjust the mission statement.
Proponents of both resolutions felt that the current mission
statement was not in line with our current members
backgrounds and that it was too exclusive. The proponents
felt that because many of our lodges are located in areas
with a large Nordic community we needed to be more
inclusive in our mission.
After much debate on both resolutions, the end result was
a hybrid compromise that the delegates felt better
represented our members and the work we do. So, without
further adieu, the new Sons of Norway Mission Statement
is:
The mission of Sons of Norway is to promote and to
preserve the heritage and culture of Norway, to celebrate
our relationship with other Nordic Countries, and provide
quality insurance and financial products to its members.

Don’t miss Rosemaling at Land of
the Vikings (LOV)
Rosemaling classes are also offered at LOV (see
previous post regarding Wood Carving). All levels of
ability are welcome, from beginner to advanced. A
copy of the course outline will be provided before the
class. Two classes are available this year: 1. The
week of Monday, October 13, Friday October 17. 2.
The week of Monday, October 20, Friday October 24.
Students generally arrive Sunday afternoon and
leave the following Saturday. Class fee for the
rosemaling is $ 125 (and a goodie for coffee breaks)
plus the cost of lodging at LOV. The class will be
taught by Eldrid Arntzen. Eldrid Arntzen is a
Norwegian-American artist who has been painting in
a variety of rosemaling styles since the 1960's. Her
work was chosen as the Gold Medal winner in 1987
and the Peoples Choice Award in 2003 at
Vesterheim, the Norwegian-American museum in
Decorah, Iowa. In April 2004 Eldrid was an invited
panelist and teacher for the first international
symposium on rosemaling, organized by Vesterheim.
This significant honor situates her among the leaders
of this folk art form, artists and symposium
participants such as Nils Ellingsgard and Sigmund
Aarseth from Norway. She is one of only a few in the
United States who are excellent painters of
rosemaling styles from so many districts. She goes
beyond technical competence in each style to create
a design and execution expressing a degree of
individuality within the traditional form, not altering
the form but extending it with lively respect. Go to
http://www.ctheritagearts.org/index.php?id=70 to see
some of Eldrid’s rosemaling; you will learn from the
best!!! LOV, nestled in the northeast corner of
Pennsylvania, is the cultural and recreational center
for District 3 of the Sons of Norway; the fall foliage
should be beautiful at this time of year. Go to
http://www.sofn3d.org/Lov/LOV_Home.html for more
information about LOV. Come on out and join us!!

October 2008
At our September meeting we showed a DVD all about Norwegian-American
immigration which included a short, but impressive clip showing the construction of our
original NorBu “BUL cabin”. To see this old movie with workers seemingly everywhere
swinging axes, sawing, and pushing wheelbarrows was truly impressive. Brother Richard
Olsen said the piece was “Truly a Treasure” and many of us agree.
The movie also showed another side of the immigration: The immigrants forced
to live in the Staten Island dump during the depression, the forlorn letters from mothers
whose sons had emigrated to America never to be heard from again, the other hardships
faced by immigrants on their arrival in the land where the streets were said to be “paved
with gold”. These are things that we knew, but rarely think about.
It should be remembered that our organization was forged and tempered in
another tough recession, that of the 1890’s, where the Norwegian immigrants banded
together to share their meager resources to get through the tough times and in doing so
formed both the insurance & fraternal arms of the Sons Of Norway.
Our thanks should go to Anne Lise Meisner for getting the DVD and to Kari
Bresher who spent days transcribing and then translating the text into English for us.
There’s much more on the DVD than we showed, perhaps we’ll show more at some
other meeting.

NEW IMPROVED! Website: http://www.sofn3d.org
Hei alle sammen !
Well by now most of us have had our first fall meeting, organized our nominating committee (if
needed), got our bazaar assignments lined up and are ready to go. Fall is here!!
I was invited to visit the Vikings of the Smokies Lodge in Knoxville TN where they were presented
with their charter and charter pins. They are already over 70 members and growing. Just like our
new lodges they are a very dynamic lodge.
Our Charlotte lodge needs a bit of help. They have 37 members and are looking for 3 more so
we can plan their Institution. If you know of a potential member in that area have them contact
the NORSK Carolina President, Carol King @ ckingnc@bellsouth.net . They already have two
membership events planned for the fall but a little help would be good.
Our Insurance Department in Minneapolis has applied for a license that will allow us to sell
insurance in Georgia. When it is approved we will able to sell insurance in all D3 states except
Maine, Vermont, Delaware and West Virginia. Plans are being made to apply in Maine in the
future. Our insurance department is looking for additional Financial Benefit Counselors in D3. If
you know of someone who would be interesting in working for the SON Insurance Department
they should contact Len Carlson at 800-945-8851.
There are a lot of SON activities going on in D3 in October and many of them are listed on our
WEB site so check it out, http://www.sofn3d.org/. The events are also found in the “3D Today”.
Our Sports and Recreation Director has organized a system of Sports Medal competition
between the Zones. Check the September issue of 3D Today for more details. I hope that you
participate.
I am on my way to earning an enamel medal in the Sykkelmerke category if I don’t slow down
this month. If I can do it you can do it. This is an excellent way for our Heritage members to join
us in a SON activity. Let’s put a run on the Sports Medal stores in Mary’s store room in
Minneapolis. For more information on the various categories of Sports Medal Competition check
out the SON web site and look for the members benefit section after you login.
While you are logged in to the web site, check out the Cultural Medal program. There are
several, they are well prepared and you should find something there that will interest you.
I just heard that the District Golf outing in Myrtle Beach was very successful. We all thank
Brother Keith for all his hard work on that project. I understand that we had close to 40 golfers
and many more at the banquet. Perhaps next year we can even do better.
Have you checked out the new SON blog? If not, please do so, they have very interesting news
there. You can find it at http://www.sonsofnorwayblog.blogspot.com/
I am looking forward to meeting many of you at the Gulfstream Leif Erikson weekend. It should
be a wonderful time. Check out the events section on the SON web site for all the information.

SUPPORT THIS EVENT WITH THE DONATION OF A TRAY – ASAP! Or, if you would rather, a
monetary donation is also acceptable; but again, please do not wait to get this money to Richard
Olsen. The committee has to go shopping for the prizes and of course needs time to prepare the
room prior to the event. Bring any items (new of course) to the lodge before the event. This is
important. We need donations of trays valued at $20.00. If unable to make up a tray please send
a donation so that we can get some special prizes, or make up trays as needed. Trays can be
brought to the lodge at the October meeting or call Richard to make arrangements.
If you would rather donate please make checks to Nor-Bu lodge and send to :

Or Call Richard Olsen, event chairman at 973-219-7699
We are also looking for people willing to assist in set up and clean up. Will you help?
WARNING TO ALL GPS USERS GOING TO LOV !
If you are planning to use your GPS to help you find your way to The Land of the
Vikings, better check that route! Several people, myself included, have found that we
were directed to a dirt road, more like a mountain trail when following our GPS to LOV.
The route out was no better with the directions leading to back country roads rather than
the major highways. In the future I will follow the directions on the LOV web site and
leave the Garmin at home.
