We are pleased that you have chosen to complete a part of your studies here. With your plan, you are taking on a special challenge: going to study in a foreign country and in a foreign city, and in a language that may still be foreign to you. That takes courage and a great deal of commitment! We will do our best to support you during your stay, for we want your experience at KIMEP to be a positive one – both academically and personally. KIMEP is the oldest western-style university in Kazakhstan and offers the broad range of study programs. People from many countries study, teach, and work in the university’s 3 faculties and 11 departments. Approximately 10 percent of our 3200 students and almost 80 percent of our professors are of foreign nationality. Many of our successful research projects are based on international collaboration. We see internationality as both a challenge and a mark of quality. The International Relations Office is responsible for promoting international activities at KIMEP, including student activities. This is a particularly important point for us, for as a student you, too, contribute towards the internationality of the university: You bring us your experiences from your university at home, and you take your experiences in Kazakhstan back to your own country. And so we encourage you to make use of your time and opportunities in Almaty: Get to know people! Talk to people, ask questions, and exchange ideas with others! Don’t be afraid to enter into discussion with your fellow students, or to explain your perspectives to your instructors. You will learn the most about us that way, and we will benefit from your showing us that in addition to the “KIMEP way,” there are other ways, too. On this note, we wish you all the best and a most interesting stay at our University, in the city of Almaty, and in Kazakhstan. Study at KIMEP Academic practices and principles KIMEP follows the credit system in evaluating students' performance (read more about it in the next section). Teaching, studying, and working at KIMEP are conducted in English. Every student is assigned a faculty member as his or her academic advisor. In addition to having the advisor, international students have a local student comrade/friend who helps an international student to transit smoothly to KIMEP and its culture, to Almaty, and to Kazakh culture in general. Usually these student mentors/friends are members of KIMEP International Students Association (KISA). In general, students should expect Western teaching and studying methods that imply pro-active student participation in seminars and workshops, or, in other words, more independent way of learning and studying; they are going to work in teams, do group assignments and presentations, and conduct their own research. Though attendance to all classes is crucial in evaluating the student’s progress, many professors do not take official attendance, but seminars and coursework are very demanding and students are highly recommended not to miss classes at all. There is no discrimination at KIMEP on racial, national, sexual, religious, or any other terms. Kazakhstan students live and study together with their international classmates. Approximately 160 faculty members, or about 40 percent of total faculty, are from 30 different countries such as the USA, the UK, Canada, India, Italy, Bangladesh, and others who hold terminal degrees from recognized universities worldwide. Among other innovations is the students' evaluation of teachers' performance. Monitoring is done once a semester and then passed to the faculty academic councils for further quality assurance work. It should be also noted that teacher-student relations are demanding high performance from each other, the feature that reflects mutual respect and openness. Academic calendar The Academic Year consists of two semesters Fall and Spring. There are additional short semesters in summer: Summer 1 and Summer 2. Summer 2 is presented by the International Summer School. Students may design their own schedule. Minimum 1 course and maximum 6 courses are allowed to register per regular semester. Maximum 3 courses are allowed for registration in Summer 1 and 1 course only in Summer 2 semester. Classes may last from 50 to 75 minutes. Some classes imply lecture and tutorials sessions. Typically a semester long course will meet for forty-five class contact hours and is worth three credits. However, some courses are worth more than three credits and some worth less. To earn a degree from KIMEP University, a student completes a set of credit requirements for a particular program. Another requirement for graduation is a minimum level of scholastic performance, which is measured by the grade point average or GPA. KIMEP University uses a letter grading system and follows North American and ECTS credit systems. More detailed ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES may be found in KIMEP Catalog. Academic calendar: Fall 2013 Spring 2014 Summer 1, 2014 Summer 2, 2014 (International Summer School 2014) Tuition and fees Tuition at KIMEP is paid based on the number of courses a student registers for in any given semester. Students can opt to take between one and six courses per semester, depending on their personal preference and study plan. Tuition can be paid in three installments for the Fall and Spring semesters, allowing students to make payment on an almost monthly basis. Tuition for Summer semesters and non-degree studies must be paid 100% before the start of the semester. For more information about payment deadlines, please see the Academic Calendar. KIMEP awards various types of financial aid in the form of grants, tuition discounts and work-study discounts. Tuition, other fees and types of financial aid are available on KIMEP website. Also the International Relations Office in collaboration with our student organizations, will organize the following events for international students: - Welcome Party - International Students Day - Nauryz Spring Festival - Sightseeing Trips in and out of Almaty - Cultural events - Farewell Party Student organizations Student Organizations play a vital role at any academic institution. KIMEP is not an exception. For our students personal development that occurs outside the classroom is as important as what is learned inside the classroom. Social life at KIMEP is very active. Students are free to choose which club to join and where to spend his or her free time. Some students are interested in sports: they attend the gym regularly, do aerobics or bodybuilding, play tennis, or go just jogging around the campus. Other students meet and spend time together in student organizations (see the list below) like student debates club, join Students in Free Enterprise Association (SIFE), AIESEC, KVN, or take part in the organization of events like beauty contests and various student conferences. Indeed, KIMEP's English-speaking environment offers a number of possibilities for students to be together and spend time in an enjoyable way. Dress Code at KIMEP Casual. Formal. Traditional. KIMEP is very open for students and does not constrain them in the way they want to behave or dress as long as it does not offend others (or damage facilities). Almaty is the center of fashion in Central Asia and is perceived to be most European. Jeans and shirts, T-shirts and shorts, or suits and long skirts, red hats or anything that looks good on you is the best One would also note that our people tend to dress beautiful and very fashionable every time they are out of their homes. It may be a challenge for those who are used to super-casual dressing and may also be interpreted as the overwhelming ambition to be the best in everything.
