List of RECOMMENDATIONS given by participants at the 1st Roundtable on the Cooperation between CSOs and the Media in the preparation of the coming elections on 4th March 2014 at KAS Office, Abuja 1. Suggestion to form a “Coalition Group” to explore the ‘specialities’ of the participants to ensure a credible and peaceful election. It may be called Media / CSO / KAS Coalition for 2015. 2. Strategic Information Sharing on condition of source protection. 3. Decision makers from Media /CSO to be convened to work together in clearly defined areas. 4. The mailing list of media houses along with telephone numbers to be distributed. 5. More use of the social media to disseminate information and ideas fast. 6. International networking with other CSOs and NGOs to improve professionalism in terms of expertise, experience, values, strategic information management and also awareness on how to handle legal, political and socio cultural challenges. 7. Establishment of CSO report desk by media houses for effective coverage of elections as reporters from media houses cannot be everywhere. 8. Media training for CSOs on reporting. 9. Meeting on a monthly basis to strengthen the relationship between the CSO and the Media. 10. KAS should organize Media engagement training for CSOs. Establish an active civil society media desk and identify active civil society for strategic collaboration. 11. Active and meaningful inclusion of Media in studies / research organized by the CSOs. Debriefing of activities /studies / researches carried out by CSOs. 12. Meetings between CSOs and Media to be extended to other states. 13. CSOs should not take sides 14. Need for openness and sustainable relationship between CSOs and the Media via regular updates. Need to work out necessary mechanism to achieve peaceful electoral process in 2015 15. Media training to strengthen the proposed platform for effective information sharing. 16. Print Media to provide columns for citizen education and mobilization towards 2015 involving CSOs. 17. Electronic Media to provide slots for citizen education and mobilization without undue financial stringencies involving CSOs. 18. Kas has to sustain the Forum and also involve INEC. 19. Use radio stations that have a wider reach in Nigeria, 20. Identify groups that can mediate / troubleshoot problem areas. 21. Educational materials to be developed. 22. CSOs / Media should take up issues towards jobs development. 23. CSOs should detach themselves from government influences and interferences 24. CSOs should complement the media by way of “advertorials” and commercials to keep it going. 25. More Editors should be part of this discussions.
