v.E.S COLLEGE OF ARTS, SCIENCE & COMMERCE Principal Report 2009-10 (1) Academics and Professional Proficiency : (a) New Courses : No New courses were started this year due to space constraint – (b) Research : Dr. V.D. Barhate is recognized this year as a Research guide for Ph.D. by University of Mumbai from the current academic year. Two students have registered for PhD under his guidance. The three minor and major research projects sanctioned last year were continued. ( c ) Our staff members invited as resource persons elsewhere: Mr. Atul Mody attended an advisory committee meeting of K.J. Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education on 14th December. Mr. Murugeshan evaluated the organizational structure of the election manifestoes of five mock political parties for VESIT on 16th March 2010. Mr. Murugeshan judged the Mock parliamentary session relating to SEZ Drill, Reorganization of States in India and making amendments, coupled with discussion of Indo – China Border Conflict at VESIT on 17th March 2010. Mrs. Mugdha Apte went as a resource person for a discussion on the conduct of the University Practical Examination on 26th February. Mrs. Shikha Dutta went as resource person for a workshop on “Introduction to world Literature” at S. K. Somaiya College on 5th December 2010. (d) Staff Development / Faculty Improvement Programme: Mrs. Shital Patil of I.T. department attended a training programme by STTP on “Java and related technologies” from 29th to 1st August 2009. The College management organized a staff Induction programme for staff members who have recently joined the V.E.S. family. The programme was conducted by Principal Dr. (Mrs.) J.K.Phadnis, Dr.(Mrs.) S. Nagpurkar, Mr. P. Murugeshan and Mrs. Latika Menon on 26th and 27th November 2009. Prof. Uday Acharya made a presentation to the teaching staff on “Work Life Balance: Personal and Professional Issues” on 6th March 2010. 1 Prof. Aarohi Parimu Khar made Presentation on “Empowerment of Sexually Abused Women” on 8th March 2010 for the benefit of the teaching staff members. Dr.( Ms.) Viney Kirpal from Pune (ex IIT Professor) made a presentation on “Interpersonal Relationships and Team Building” for the benefit of teaching staff . Mrs. Santhini Nair attended a one week short course in “Bioinformatics : Emerging tool in Biological Science” from 1st to 5th February 2010. Dr. Anita Kanwar made a presentation on “Grants Available for research from various gut Agencies”. ( e ) Paper / Poster Presentation by staff Members: Mr. Atul Mody presented a paper on “Capacity Building of Undergraduate Physics Students” at the 2nd Conference of “Peoples Council of Education” in October 2009. At a National Level Conference on “Continuing Education Programme in Clinical Psychology” at Kannur that was organized by the Indian Clinical Psychologists and accredited by Rehabilitation Council of India on 2 nd and 3rd October 2009. Mrs. Radhika Mohan presented two papers on “Concession for Learning Disability in Maharashtra” and “Life Skills Education”. She was also a panel member on both the days for the discussion. Mrs. Dipta Dasgupta presented a poster on “Mind –Maps for Mathematics” at the Homi Bhabha Institute for science Education in a National Level Science Education Conference from 5th – 8th October 2009. Dr. Nagpurkar Presented a paper at the National conference on ‘Status of Muslins in Maharashtra organized by the TISS and the Minority Commission, Govt. pf Maharashtra on 18th and 19th December 2009. Mr. Atul Mody presented a paper at an international conference on Global Interdependence and Decision Sciences (ICGI DS) from 28th to 30th December. Mrs. Aarohi Parimu Khar presented a paper on 22nd January titled “Empowering Sexually Abused Women” at K.B. college of Arts and Commerce. Barhate, Mrs. Parinita Madan, Mr.Anand Kumar S.Gupta (M.Sc. student) and Mr. Datta B., Mandhare (M.Sc. student) was published in the Oriental Journal of Chemistry 2009 Vol 25(3) on “Extractive Sphectrophotometric Determination of Pd(II) with Isonitroso-p-nitroacetophenone Thiosemicarbazone”. Mrs. Jayalakshmi Srinivasan and Mrs. Shital Patil released their book “Introduction to Computer Application” for BMS students (Published by Vipul Prakashan) on 31st December 2009. Mr. Atul Mody presented a paper at an international conference on Global Interdependence and Decision Sciences (ICGI DS) from 28th to 30th December. His Paper titled “Physics: Teaching and Learning through problems” appeared in the bulletin of Indian Association of Physics Teachers I (12), pg 323-325. Mrs. S. Jayalakshmi released the third edition of her book on “CRM” which was published by Vipul Prakashan on 26th February. ( g ) Academic achievements and performance of students : The result analysis sheets for the examinations conducted in 2009 are attached with this report. ( h ) Co-curricular activities : The department of psychology organized a study visit for T.Y.B.A. (Psychology) students to the Pune Mental Hospital to understand the nuances of institutionalization of people having mental health problems on 4th January 2010. 4 The Chemistry Association organized a series of special coaching lectures for the Aptitude Test in Chemistry organized by the Indian Chemical Society on 6th September. Four students were selected in this test. The department of Microbiology and Biotechnology organized a study tour to Ahmedabad, Baroda and Anand in Gujrat from 25th to 29th October. They visited Zydus Cadilla, Amul Dairy, National Research Center for Medicinal Aromatic Plants, Natronal Institute for Occupational Health and M.S. University, Baroda. The department of Bio-technology organized an educational visit to Ahmedabad, Baroda and Anand for 50 students from TY(BT), TY(Micro) and M.Sc.(Micro) from 25th to 30th October 2009. The students visited the Zydus Research Center, National Institute of Occupational Health, National Research Center for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Amul and M.S. University, Baroda. Dr. Shikha Dutta accompanied S.Y. B.M.M. students on an industrial visit to Bangalore and Mysore from 9th to 14th November. They visited the Krantiveer Studio and Prasad Studio (Sound Mixing) in Bangalore. The S.Y.B.M.M. students launched “SPLAT” - an E- magazine on 26th November. Mr. S.K. Saravana and Mr. Ashwini Kumar Yadav from T.Y.B.Sc. (Chemistry) attended on one day workshop on “Instrumentation” that was organized by Shri C.B. Patel Research Center and School of Sciences, NMIMS on 29 th November 2009. The M.Sc. Part II Chemistry students were taken on an educational visit to BARC on 23rd December 2009. The department of economics sent Mr. Mayur Bajaj (T.Y.B.Com.) and Mr. Avinash (T.Y.B.A.) to attend a Residential Leadership Camp at Lonavla from 21st to 28th December 2009. The Camp organized highly interactive leadership training session by experts over this period. The sessions reportedly were highly stimulating. Four M.Sc. (Analytical Chemistry) students attended a conference organized by Ruia college on various sophisticated analytical techniques on 9th January 2010. The students from T.Y.B.Com. (Banking and Insurance) went for an industrial visit to Bangalore and Mysore from 16th to 21st January. They had the privilege of 5 visiting Coca Cola Co. Ltd., Karnataka Silk Industries, Mysore Sandal Industry and State Bank of Mysore. About 80 students from F.Y.B.M.S. and S.Y.B.M.S. attended a one-day seminar on “Emerging Trends - Visioning to Reality” at Raheja college on 18th January 2010. 53 T.Y.B.M.S. students accompanied by two professors went for an industrial visit to HMT tractors, Mushroom factory and Pharma companies in the industrial belt of Chandigarh- Shimla region from 2nd to 8th February 2010. The F.Y. B.Com. (Financial Markets) students were taken for an industrial visit to the National Insurance Academy at Pune and to the Unicable Industry at Lonavala on 20th February 2010. The S. Y. B.Com (Financial Markets) were taken for an industrial visit to Silvasa on 29th February 2010. They visited Alok Industries and S. K. Synthetics. The S.Y B.M.S. students were taken for an industrial visit to Silvassa. On this trip, 58 students were accompanied by two professors to Jaya Bharat Filament. University Level : Ms. Kanchan Jadhav from S.Y.I.T. secured the silver medal at the University level competition in Shot Put this year. The college students also secured the following prizes- Ms. Subalaxmi Tripathi from S.Y.B.Sc. won the 6th prize for long jump and 8th prize for 400m., Ms. Vimla Chandra from F.Y.B.Sc. won the 3rd prize for long jump, Ms. Supriya Adhikari from S.Y.B.Com. won the 3rd prize for high jump, Mr. Jayaprakash Singh from F.Y.B.Com. won the 8th prize for 20 km walk and Mr. Sandeep Singh from S.Y.B.Com. won the 8th prize for Triple jump. b) Inter-collegiate Level Some prominent prizes are listed below : Mr. J.Chandrashekhar, Mr. Virochan Chavan and Mr. Ronak Patel from S. Y. (Biotech) and Mr. Vivek Parab from S. Y.(Micro) won the First Prize of Rs. 10000/- for their project on “Waste Management in College Laboratories” at a State level competition titled “Vidnyan Sanshodhan Puraskar”on 28th February 2010. 6 Ms. Divya Iyer and Ms. Dipti Iyer from S.Y.I.T. won the First Prize in debate at the inter-collegiate festival conducted by Elphinston college during 7th and 8th December and also at Ruia college on 18th and 19th December. At an intercollegiate festival organized by National college our T.Y.B.A (Psychology) students were awarded the II Prize for the stall put up on mental health from 14th to 16th December 2010. Our college team from T.Y.C.S. won the “Best College award” at an intercollegiate IT event, “Zeal” that was organized by Sidharth College on 22nd December. At the Madhava Mathematics Competition held at Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education, Mr. Aditya Garg from S.Y.B.Sc. acquired the Third Position among the Mathematics students from University of Mumbai and University of Pune who participated in this competition on 3rd January 2010. Ms. Mayuri from T.Y.B.A. (Economics) won the First Prize in Poster Making at the Intercollegiate Economics Festival “Aarth Aarohan” organized by SIES College on 9th January 2010. Our college team won the I Prize in the Group Dance Competition at the intercollegiate festival of Mithibai college, “Shikar”, on 16th January. At the intercollegiate festival organized by Modern college on 20th and 21st January Mr. Bhavesh from S.Y. I.T. won the First Prize in Tech Quiz and Second Prize in Sudoku. Our students from S.Y.I.T. and T.Y.I.T won the “Best College Award” at the inter-collegiate festival organized by ICL college on 27th and 28th January. The S.Y.B.Sc. (Microbiology and Biotechnology) students won the First Prize at a Microbiology based skit competition organized by the Royal college as a part of their intercollegiate festival titled “Gyan Manthan 2010” on 30th January. Mr. Chinmaya and Miss Supriya from T.Y. B.A. (Psychology) won the First Prize at an intercollegiate seminar presentation on Carl Rogers at M.D. Shah Mahila college, Mumbai on 6th February 2010. One team from S.Y.B.A. (Psychology) won the First Prize at an intercollegiate seminar competition on “Stress and Adolescence” at P.N. Doshi college, Mumbai on 9th February 2010. 7 ( 3 ) Mega events of the year ( Workshops / Seminars Projects / Exhibitions / Functions / Intra & Inter-collegiate Functions) Dept. of Economics along with the Board of studies in Economics organized aone Day workshop on the New syllabus of the T.Y. B.A. paper VIII ‘Indian Financial System’ on 5th November 2009. At the invitation of the department of Psychology, Mrs. Radhika Narayanan from S.P. Jain Institute of Management Research conducted a one – day inter-collegiate workshop on “Discovering one-self: Explore your Potentials” on 27th June 2009. The department of BMM organized its annual cultural event “Raaga”on 10th August 2009. Pandit Satish Vyas was invited as the guest of honour on this occasion. Students from Sulabh Sulabh School for mentally retarded gave a performance on this occasion. “Sci-Clone”, the annual inter–collegiate festival for postgraduate students of biological sciences was organized by the department of Microbiology on 9th October. The programme was attended by 156 post-graduate students who participated in events like Paper Presentation, Poster Making, Debate and Quiz. The department of Economics in association with the Forum of Free Enterprise organized the 45th A.D. Shroff Memorial Elocution this year on 11th November 2009. Our first Prize winner Miss. Mandeep from T.Y.B.A. was selected as an intercollegiate finalist. The Forum sponsored cash prizes of Rs. 2500, certificates and booklets for this competition. On the same day a slide show titled “Cartooning out the story of the Global Recession 2008-2009” was presented by Mrs. Samhitha Sharma Kain and Mr. Avinash from T.Y.B.A.(Economics). The T.Y.B.Sc. (Physics) students organized “Exhibition 2009” on 17th November 2009. In this exhibition, they highlighted the origin, characteristics and applications of different sections of the electromagnetic spectrum starting from radio frequency waves to gamma rays. There were also a few electronic circuitary exhibits like event counter, water level sensor etc. As a part of the “Awareness Programme for the Youth 2009”, Sri Sathya Sai Seva organization conducted an Essay Competition and a Poster making competition in three languages (English, Hindi and Marathi). On 21st November 2009. The department of B.M.M. organized a Social Awareness week (SAW) from 23rd to 27th November to remind the people of their social responsibilities. The three 8 sub-themes of SAW were “Start literacy”, “Save Environment” and “Stop Violence”. The department of Mathematics organized its 20th M3 contest on 12th December in which students from various disciplines participated. The department of BMS organized its annual inter-collegiate management festival “Confluence” from 16th to 18th December 2009. It attracted participation from 40 colleges across the city. The major events included “Campus Show” i.e. presenting your campus through a short film, “Unique Identity Card Project”, a P.R. event, “Adorning the Role of Business Tycoons” and “Biz Antakshri”. The college annual indoor sports events were held from 20th to 22nd December while the outdoor events were held on 23rd and 24th December. The department of Banking and Insurance organized its annual intercollegiate festival “Euphonity” on 9th and 10th January. The chief guest Mr. Eknath Birari (Senior Manager and Senior Faculty Member of staff Training college of oriental Bank of Commerce) gave a talk on “Careers in Banking” The other events organized were Sudoku, Try and Rectify Stock Market etc. About 200 students from various Mumbai colleges participated. The annual intra-college festival “Talentia” was organized in our college on 11th and 12th January with a number of events from fine arts, literary arts and performing arts. The Research Circle of our college along with R.C.F. held a two-day national level interdisciplinary seminar on “Global Warming: Causes, Consequences and Coping Strategies” on 22nd and 23 January 2010, wherein several experts in the field along with participants from the industry took part. The chairperson of the seminar was Principal Dr. (Mrs.) J. K. Phadnis, The convenor and co-converner were Dr. (Mrs.) S. Nagpurkar and Dr. V. Barathe respectively. The seminar was inaugurated by J. Kohareswarn, Director, Marketing, R.C.F. in the presense of Shri. B. L. Boolani and other illuminories. Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh Head of Life Science department, University of Mumbai delivered the keynote address. Another prominent presentation was by Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Scientist, NEERI, The highlight of the seminar was the special case study presented by some farmers from Harayana who have obtained and traded “Carbon Credits” under the “Clean Development Mechanism”. There was also a presentation by Ms. Ruchi 9 Jain, India Co-ordinator of 350.org who was a part of the Indian Youth Delegation to the recent Copenhagen Summit. The Valedictory Address was given by Mr. U. S. Jha, Chairman and Managing Director of R.C.F. A poster competition on the seminar topic was also organized in which 35 entries were received. Many of our college Professors also guided students and presented posters at this seminar. ( 4 ) Campus Placements and Career Guidance : An Exhibition on various careers was organized in the Forum Hall of the college on 8th ,9th , 10th , 11th and 12th of June. It was left open for the just passed students of XII standard. A Career Talk was organized for the students and parents of just XII passed students. Mr. Shankar Jadhav, a very senior corporate personality, spoke on Careers through MBA and in top level management on 9th June 2009. A second Career Talk was organized for the students and parents of just XII passed students on careers in Aviation Industry on 11th June 2009. The resource person Ms. Hanovi spoke about service sector careers in general and careers in aviation industry. IRIS Business Services (I) Pvt. Ltd. conducted its PPT (Pre Placement Talk) on 17th June 2009 and short-listed 12 students for further interviews at their corporate office. On 19th June 2009 Genesys International Corporation Ltd. shot-listed 7 of our students for final interviews at their corporate office at SEEPZ, Andheri. “Gee Bee Educations” Conducted a seminar on “Education Abroad” for T.Y.I.T. students on 11th July 2009. Mr. Rahul and Miss Vidhi had a discussion with T.Y.I.T. students on “How to prepare for MBA and MCA entrance exam” on 25th July 2009. “Career Launcher” conducted a Seminar on 21st August 2009 on “Preparations for MBA”. Wipro Technologies conducted a pre-placement talk followed by interviews for recruiting the 2009 batch graduates of V.E.S. on 26th and 27th October 2009. The Accountancy department along with the Career Guidance Cell organized an orientation programme for “Careers through Accounts” that was conducted by ICFAI on 29th and 30th October 2009. 10 A Career Guidance session was conducted by Prof. Umesh Chauhan on 14th November and 28th November 2009, to orient the students on career planning and handling of personal profiles. Mr. Vaze of Prerna Technologies conducted a 90 minute session on career planning for the third year students on 21st November 2009. During the placement week organized by the Placement Cell of the college, from 1st to 7th December 2009,4 T.Y.B.M.S students were placed in WNS and 9 were placed in J.P. Morgan. A placement programme by Wipro Technologies was also organized on 13th December. The department of Sociology began a drive for free employment cards on 21st December 2009 behalf of the government of Maharashtra for all the students of the college. This was in collaboration with “For the People Foundation” a local NGO run by Mr. Vikram Bhambani. Three students from Computer Science and two from I.T. were selected by HCL in their placement programme organized at HCL, Ghatkopar on 24th December 2009. Our College organized a placement programme by Tech Mahindra on 30th December wherein neighborhood colleges were also invited (Pillai, SIES, Sion, S.K. Somaiya and Acharya Marathe) 13 of our students were selected (5 from CS, 7 from IT, and 1 from Physics). Under the WASE programme, Wipro Technologies Limited conducted interviews for the students of T.Y.I.T. on 24th January 2010 in which 2 students got selected. At the Wipro BPO placement programme organized on 9th February 2010, three students from T.Y.C.S got selected. In aptitude tests conducted by HCL Ghatkopar and Thinklabs on 28th February nine and two students have been selected respectively. At the Think Labs Placement Programme organized in our college on 20th February for our ex-students from CS and IT, one ex-student got selected. ( 5 ) NSS Activities : The NSS Unit of the college organized a rural Camp from 25th to 31st December involving 80 student volunteers in our adopted village ‘Sutrakar’ at Talasari district Thane. 11 The NSS Unit of the college organized its 9th Blood Donation camp in the college on 4th January collected 63 bottles of blood for the Sarvodaya Blood Bank. The NSS wing of the college sent Ms. Puja Sathe from F.Y. B.Com. (Financial Marketing) to attend a Student Master Training RRC (Red Ribbon Club) programme organized by Mumbai district Aids Control Society for three days at Lonavala from 28th February 2010.
