T-Wolves Can’t Handle speed of Roadrunners
A four-game wining streak and Robin Hayes being named Offensive Player of the Week,
the lady Thunderwolves soccer team hoped against hope it would be enough to beat
eleventh ranked conference rival Metropolitan State College on Friday – It wasn’t.
The CSU-Pueblo women’s soccer lost 0-5 to the defending II - A National Champions,
the Metro State Roadrunners. With the loss, CSU-Pueblo drops to 2-1 in the RMAC and
4-3 overall, while Metro State improves to 2-0-1 in the RMAC and 5-1-1 overall.
The loss didn’t come as a surprise to CSU-Pueblo head coach, Dave Morris,
“They’re the defending the National Champs, they’re a really talented team, we knew
that already. They’re really athletic and they showed why. They deserved to beat us and I
respect them,” says Morris. He went on to say that he wasn’t disappointed in the team.
“I’m real proud of how we competed. . . we showed we’re good enough to compete with
them. We were able to give them trouble. We were able to, in spurts, make them play a
lot of defense. Now we just need to build on that,” says Morris.
Morris added, “We’re a young team . . . we’re still making mistakes that young teams
make.”
Metro State out-shot the lady ThunderWolves 25-8 in their victory. The CSU-Pueblo
team couldn’t stop Roadrunner offensive standouts, Becca Mays and Katie Kilbey. Each
player scored two goals a piece against the ThunderWolves.
While the Roadrunners could seemingly shoot at will on the Thunderwolves, Morris took
pride in the fact that his team didn’t allow the opposition to get out in front of them. “ We
also did a nice job defending on the breaks. We did a good job in attacking, we found a
few seems and had some good looks,” says Morris.
Morris isn’t the only one with a positive outlook on the loss. Starting Thunderwolves
Middle Fielder, Jr., Emily Fay comments, “ I know we lost. But we did better compared
to last year.”
The Thunderwolves fell 0-9 last season to the Roadrunners. Fay continued her thoughts
on the game at hand by saying, “We kept consistently playing, we never gave up, it’s a
definite improvement over last year.”
Fay hopes that the loss this season will help the younger players adjust to the faster speed
of collegiate level soccer. Fellow teammate and team standout, So., Erica Warmack also
found some satisfaction in the team play.
“ I don’t think zero to five is indicative of the game. I think we played better than what
the score says. I think we made five mistakes and they capitalized on them. If we
eliminated those, we would be evenly matched,” says Warmack.
Warmack, Morris and Thunderwolves agree that in order to beat Metro the next time,
they have to be tactically flawless. As the season marches on, the team looks forward to a
rematch.
