OVERVIEW
The ISUS Institutes are pioneers in the creation of innovative technical high schools
for continuing and re-entry high school age youth. ISUS has three Institutes that grant
diplomas and industry credentials upon completion of the program:



Construction Technology Institute - Students learn both in a lab setting and
by actually building residences and commercial structures; National Center
for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification offered.
Advanced Manufacturing Institute – Students learn computer technology,
computer assisted design (CAD), factory automation; Intelligent Building
Systems’ prototype wall panel line provides experience in a production
setting; MOS, A+, ABS credentials offered.
Health Care Institute – Students learn healthcare fundamentals, including
routine patient care; gain experience as volunteers in hospitals and nursing
homes; Nursing Assistant credentials (STNA) offered.
Since many of the careers students choose require post-secondary coursework, ISUS
offers students the opportunity to prepare for college. The family-like atmosphere
and the small class size contribute to the friendly and supportive ISUS culture.
PRIMARY PURPOSE
To provide vocational training to students that is consistent with the recognized body of
vocational knowledge and state-approved teaching techniques.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor Degree in associated field

State licensure as vocational instructor

5-10 years experience in vocation

Understanding and appreciation for the non-traditional environment and the
students at ISUS.

Ability to exhibit the positive behavioral attributes as outlined in the Performance
Management System
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES
The following responsibilities and duties encompass the three R’s: Relationships,
Relevance and Rigor:
RELATIONSHIPS

Provide students with daily briefings on work to be completed during class or the
day’s activities. Instruct students through work assignments/monitor and coach
their progress toward assignment completion. Assure quality workmanship, safety
compliance, and building code/ inspection requirements in construction activities.

Establish professional rapport with students by demonstrating their worth and
dignity while communicating responsibility and citizenship expectations.

Assume custodial responsibility for students in classroom and in occasional nonscheduled or off-site situations.

Be vigilant in protecting the confidentiality of students, guarding against
inappropriate statements or release of information.
RELEVANCE

Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in a specific vocational subject area,
incorporate best teaching practices, and recognize individual uniqueness in
student assimilation rates in order to help students attain basic vocational
proficiency.

Plan and provide an instructional program consistent with ISUS curriculum and
recognized vocational standards such as National Center for Construction
education & Research (NCCER), Ohio Competency Achievement Program
(OCAP), MOS, A+, etc. to teach basic construction skills in referenced areas.

Instruct subjects in an effective manner relative to the multiplicity of cultures and
ability levels. Use sound instructional strategies, techniques, activities, media, and
demonstrate equipment use consistent with student needs and instructional goals.

Ensure hands-on participation in teaching construction skills, techniques,
activities and media consistent with student needs and goals.

Create and submit daily lesson and activity plans detailing educational objectives
to the Curriculum Counselor. Periodically evaluate student assimilation through
testing and project assignment, and provide specific, accurate and substantive
feedback as to each student’s progress. Prepare progress reports and report cards
as required by school policy or law.

Maintain professional certification and/or licensure through ongoing training and
education as directed by the state and consistent with its self-responsibility
mandates..

Attend and participate in staff meetings, committees and scheduled training as
required. Complete required documentation and respond to specific internal
informational requests in a timely and complete manner.
RIGOR

Verify daily student attendance and punctuality; report and/or take appropriate
action arising from this area in a timely manner. Assure that you are punctual and
dependable in your own attendance. Follow appropriate policies in time-away
situations.

Manage classroom/worksite activities in a manner that stimulates learning,
teamwork, and developmental skills.

Maintain standards of appropriate behavior through fair and just progressive
corrective actions. Refer formal disciplinary issues to counselors and/or
administrators for disposition.

Conduct yourself in a manner which demonstrates positive role model attributes
of responsible adulthood in all realms of employment, including punctuality,
reliability, professional behavior, emotional stability, and sound judgment as part
of teaching ethics and community relations.

Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

Behave in a cooperative and constructive manner; follow all company policies,
state, local, federal and other applicable laws and guidelines; comply with any and
all job-specific requirements.
PERFORMANCE MEASURES
Your performance will be measured by the following, subject to management discretion.
This list is not all inclusive and is subject to change.

Builds positive relationships with students.

Maintains contact with parent about student issues and progress.

Demonstrates improvement in student academic performance.

Ability to manage class and create a safe and energetic learning environment.

Use a variety of instructional methods (direct instruction, cooperative learning,
hands-on participation, use of technology, and multiple intelligences, etc…).

Maintains OSHA and ISUS safety requirements.

Maintains professional credentials, stays abreast of current standards and
practices, and participates in staff development opportunities.

Knowledge and adherence to the ISUS community, philosophy and core values.

Maintains positive relationship with colleagues.

Good attendance and is punctual.

Demonstrates professionalism in appearance and has a supportive attitude.

Completes paperwork in a timely fashion (daily classroom attendance, lesson
plans, interim reports, grades, phone logs, etc…).

Supervises classroom, hallways and any other areas of the building as needed.

Consistently supports State and ISUS policies and procedures.

Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to move for effective classroom management.

Must have correctable hearing and vision

Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Overtime and occasional travel may be required to fulfill the requirements of this
position.
