Aim: By the end of the session students will be able to solve the puzzle and do the questionnaire; to skim
the text for specific information and scan for main idea.
Procedure

The Star Splendid Banner is sung in the audience.
Teacher: You’ve heard about America everywhere from the Mass Media, from school, from the other
sources of information. Today we are going to recollect your background knowledge or to learn new
interesting and useful facts about America. During the session you are going to work in three groups.
Each group will get a dollar for a correct answer (Приложение 4)
At the end we will count the score of each group and find out the winner of today’s lesson. The winner
will get medals.
Step 1: the first task for you is to do the puzzle and answer the question who is it? (Students collect
puzzles and look at the screen to see the correct picture)

Teacher: By the way he is our guest today. So Sir Christopher Columbus you are welcome (the student of
the upper course appeared in the audience in the costume of explore) The great explore came to our
session to tell you the story of his discovery, and you are to listen to him and answer his questions.

Hello, everybody! Do you want to hear a story from world’s greatest sailor? It all began in far
1492. All Europe was trying to reach the Far East by sailing around the southerner tip of Africa. But I had
a better idea. Some people said that the world is round. And I knew they were right. I even managed to
persuade the Queen Isabel. She gave me money and I promised to find a new way to India. Finally, on
September 6th, 1492 three marvelous ships the Pinta, the Nina, the Santa Maria began great journey with
the bravest crew and brilliant captain abroad. It was a great trial for me and my crew, because the
Atlantics full of beasts and monsters, you know . But we have reached the land on October 10th. I thought
it was India, but somehow it appeared to be the new continent! But I didn’t claim it. It was done by
Amerigo Vespucci, another talented explorer. That’s why in 1507 mapmakers named this new world
America. But still my achievements weren’t forgotten. Columbus Day is celebrated on 2 nd Monday of
October in the USA and most Spanish-speaking countries to honor brave, courageous and skilled captain
and explorer-Christopher Columbus

Teacher We are moving further, the following task is a quiz and we are going to know do we have any
experts on America here? So look at the screen, read and listen to the question and raise your hand if your
group is ready to answer for correct answer you will get a dollar (20 questions)

Step 4:
Teacher: the next point in our session that we are going to cover is American symbols, so please look at
the screen and match the pictures with their titles.
