File in ACES Quality Programs and Care notebook, behind Parent Correspondence tab. ACES Site Coordinators’ Recruiting Ideas – Part 2 February 2008 Note: The ideas below were copied from emails. The writers did not intend their emailed comments to be “formal” statements. Benevia Mock, Triangle Lake I currently have 4 spaces available and I have sent an e-mail to the teachers in that grade level and asked them for numbers and sent flyers home with their students. I have given the SIMS secretary flyers and brochures and told her how many spaces and the grade level of the available spaces. Elaine Alexander, Murphey In December, my principal did a Connect-ed to parents about available spaces in grades K-2. Since that time, I have acquired approximately 6 new students, but lost 4 students so we’re right back where we started. I will have him send out another Connect-Ed this week as well as place the promotion flyers in the teachers boxes. I will post the ACES News with enrollment information at the front office. Lauren Fields, Madison I have sent home some ACES enrollment brochures with parents and have signs up for ACES enrollment. Ginger Hardy, Guilford Elementary We have brochures out at the front office and we keep brochures outside our offices. Our office staff always asks incoming students’ parents if they are in need of afterschool care. I have sent fliers home in the Monday folders that teachers send home to all their students in their classes. We made a banner and stayed for our PTA Meeting that provided Escape School and handed out brochures. Some of the group leaders participated in our school carnival. We have it posted in the PTA flier that goes out. I have let the teachers know that if they have a student that is struggling and feels they would benefit from ACES to please let the parents know that we have spaces. I have sent out an e-connect message. A lot of our parents have lost their jobs and have no alternative but to take their child out. I have provided support to these parents and let them know that if their situation changes to please call back and we will do what we can to get their child back in. They are very appreciative and I have had some parents keep in touch even if they had not found anything, just to check in. I had one parent tell me that the show of support made them feel more comfortable to bring their child back. We will be available for other parent nights like EOG night and our Multicultural event to show our support of our school. Claire Tippens, Claxton I asked all teachers to include in this week’s Monday newsletter that we had a few openings. I told the teachers to have the parents email me with their child’s name, grade, and a telephone number for me to be in contact with them personally. Ms. Burgman is also going to send out a Connect-ed message next week if I don’t get the kind of response I am looking for to fill my few openings. However, I have had 3 parents already respond, so I am very hopeful at this point. Loretta McGilberry,Sedgefield Elementary Applications are always available in the office and cafeteria. Pictures are posted of students involved in activities. I attend the school special events when possible. We are always willing to answer questions and parental concerns. Karen Bennett, Jefferson We have sent fliers home to students in the grade levels where we have available spaces. The receptionist in the office is aware we have available spaces as she is the first person people contact when inquiring. The front office also has ACES brochures in the office year round. I also try to keep the ACES website updated with information regarding openings. We are always sure to keep our bulletin board interesting to attract parents and students. I also will include the information in our ACES newsletter and the PTA newsletter. I have about 5 spaces to fill, but the older kids seem to be harder to enroll. I realized that many of the parents here at Jefferson have been on waiting list more than once and have just about given up on ever getting a space so the more we can put it out there the better. Nilsa Colon, Kirkman Park Some things I did when I first came on board: Wrote a personal introduction letter to parents, sent them home. I placed another letter, brochures (with my name/phone) I gave it to all my van riders. This week Monday I will do the same for all other students (car riders/bus etc.) Word of mouth is the best and most economical way to advertise. Therefore I am speaking with parents, students, and staff. (I have one filling out an application and two will be back in the program in two weeks) Up on-going plans: Printed the flyer you sent (very helpful) and send home with all the students. Also display flyer around the school. Met with PTA president and requested 5 mins of their time for ACES (I will put together short PPP of our students at ACES having fun/learning and will show for PTA meeting. Connected-I will call and let all parents know I am the new ACES coordinator and invite them to come and see what we are doing and plan to do at our ACES program. ( with ok from principal) Plan to go into the classrooms and speak to the children ( Already having students come to me asking for applications to ACES. I will follow-up with their parents. Open-house for ACES fun games, food etc. (Date to be determined. Friday would be a good day.) I would also like to plan an ACES fashion show and invite everyone... Display students art work, school work etc. around the school. I began designing ACES school website Monthly News letter Bonnie Caskey, Alamance We have armbands that students wear which means that they are an ACES representative, helper and team player. They are in bright colors and it really brings a lot of attention to the program. I have also starting setting up in the cafeteria earlier while the parents and students are there. I have been receiving a lot of calls but unfortunately for the wrong grades. Latoya Dickens, Stokesdale When new students enroll at Stokesdale, we have enrollment applications attached to these forms. We also use the Connect-Ed system as often as possible to let the community out here know of spaces in ACES. Lywanna Smith-Gregory, Falkener - I’ve put flyers in the front office. - Bulletin Board, they have now put that in the back, not sure what good it’s doing now. I’ll talk to my principal about location. - Parents referrals, teachers, as well as students. - We also have the cafeteria for promotions. Kim Ellison, Gillespie Park 1. I have updated the website for Gillespie ACES Program 2. My principal has done several Connect EDs and has announced that ACES has space available. 3. I have given parents newsletter current in ACES and also given to the PTA president, whose child happens to attend our ACES program. (YEAH!!) 4. I have given all teachers an email explaining that we have openings in ACES and to let parents know when having conferences. 5. Also, I have distributed ACES Flyers to the Pre-K teacher to send home with parents. 6. I have mailed all upcoming Kindergarteners (Pre-K) flyers for ACES. (Just in case parents did not look at the information sent home.) 7. I have information in the front office about ACES along with applications. Beth Beaver, Erwin At Erwin, I have requested that the principal include a message regarding available space in Aces on her next connect ed phone message. I have sent home poster for Aces to appropriate grade levels. I have placed more brochures and posters in front office and entrance to school. I have also informed teachers of available spaces in our program. Tawanna Maryland, Foust This year it has been very important for Foust ACES to build better relationships with the staff and with our families. We have made a continued effort to connect with the day’s activities by attending our student’s classes, volunteering for tutoring, partnering with the school in special events, building a parent empowerment council to enrich our student’s family life and hosting special interest clubs for the school to participate in with ACES. It has been a great year for us, as shown by the hospitality committee, who rose over $500 in scholarship funds. We want to be seen as a partner continuing the effort to improve each student’s ability to become confident individuals.
