1. Manitoba Conservatory managerial staff praises Jesús’ teaching
Jesús Ángel Miguel García gave a master class on Spanish phonetics at the Manitoba
Conservatory of Music on January 14th.

2. Jesús interprets for Mexican Teachers Association leader and
Manitoba Teachers Society
On January 20th, Jesús Ángel Miguel García interpreted for one of the most prominent Mexican
teachers’ representatives from Oaxaca during her visit to Winnipeg. Raquel Cruz Manzano
was invited by the Manitoba Teachers’ Society to talk to its members about the current situation
of teachers in Oaxaca. She described and analyzed their work and events over the last year in
that part of Mexico.
Jesús was presented with a jacket from the Manitoba Teachers’ Society and a set of pens in
appreciation for his work interpreting Mrs. Cruz powerful message.
3. Spanish Institute launches Spain Festival
The Spanish Institute is proud to launch the Spain Festival, “Spain on the Plains”.
The Spain Festival celebrates the rich and vibrant culture of Spain, bringing to Winnipeg a
selection of the best music, dance and paintings.
A year ago, Jesús Ángel Miguel García, director of The Spanish Institute, conceived the idea of
holding the Spain Festival in Winnipeg, inviting several Manitoban artists and organizations to
showcase and host the best of Spain during the Festival. Below is the result.

4. Bolero Dance Theatre presents Suite Española
March 2nd at 8 p.m. and 3rd at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The Hispanic Dance Theatre presents:
Suite Española by Isaac Albéniz. A Flamenco and Classical Spanish Dance
Pedro Aurelio, Artistic Director.
Guest dancer from Spain: Beatriz Barceló.
Gas Station Theatre, Winnipeg.
The show entitled Suite Española will feature new interpretations of the music of Isaac Albéniz,
with dancers incorporating traditional elements including long, trained dresses, shawls, fans,
castanets, and matador capes. The show will also include flamenco and other Spanish dances.
Accompaniment will be provided by Duncan McGregor on guitar and Cary Denby on piano.

5. Spanish classic bolero worshop
March 2nd at 8 p.m. and 3rd at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Three day dance workshop by Beatriz Barceló, Madrid’s flamenco dancer.
Open to the public following the run of the above shows.

Beatriz Barceló has danced at some of the best flamenco tablaos in Madrid including Casa
Patas and El Corral de la Pacheca. She has also performed with the Flamenco Ballet of Maria
Rosa under the direction of the legendary Antonio. Beatriz has danced and guest taught all over
the world including Hong Kong, England, Brazil, France, and Italy. She is currently the director of
one of Madrid’s most prestigious dance studios.
Bolero Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Pedro Aurelio met Beatriz almost seven years ago on
his first of several study trips to Spain. Through Beatriz, he gained the opportunity of training with
some of the best Spanish dance teachers in Spain, including Pilar Azorin, Mamen Tejedor, La
Popi, and Eloy Pericet, master teacher of escuela bolera (18th century classical Spanish dance).
6. Camerata Nova and Spanish Institute present Música Hispánica

Concert “Música Hispánica”
St. Mary's Cathedral (353 St. Mary Avenue), Winnipeg
“A concert to celebrate the music of Spain from medieval times to today. The first half of the
concert will feature medieval chants from Catalunya (Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, known as the
Red Book), as well as excerpts of Tomás Luis de Victoria's Requiem and motets by Guerrero. In
the second half, we will explore works by contemporary composers who have been inspired by
the words of the famous Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.
This concert will be produced in partnership with the Spanish Institute.
Jesús Ángel Miguel-García, Director of the Institute, will give a pre-concert talk on the cultural
and historic context of the music.

Three Spanish painters stand out as milestones in the history of Western art: Velázquez, Goya
and Picasso, the latter recognized as the founder of modern art. To these names must be added
those of El Greco and Dalí. The work of these masters will be explored by the award winning and
acclaimed director of the Spanish Institute of Manitoba, Jesús Ángel Miguel-García, Prof., Ldo.,
M.A.
About Jesús Ángel Miguel-García
Jesús Á. Miguel-García, Prof., Ldo., M.A., was born in Burgos, Spain. He is founder and director
of the Spanish Institute of Manitoba, “considered the leading Spanish-language specialist in
Manitoba”.
He was a manager (languages) at the Open University in the U.K. He has also lectured for over
15 years in British and Canadian universities.
The Spanish Institute specializes in Spanish courses, translations, consultancy and cultural
events. More than 5,000 students, governmental agencies, corporations, businesses and private
individuals have benefited from its services.
Jesús Ángel Miguel-García graduated with top honours in education, finishing first in his
class. He went on to study linguistics and literature at Valladolid University, Spain. He was
awarded the prestigious Erasmus scholarship from the European Union to study at Newcastle
University, U.K., where he received his M.A. in teaching. He went on to study for his Ph.D.
Public speaker, he has been a regular guest of the BBC, local and international television and
radio stations for his expertise on education, learning and political issues, being featured in
numerous publications. He has also published nationally and internationally on the Spanish
language and culture.
Jesús Miguel-García has received the prestigious MTS Pioneer Business Award and the Star
of the City of Winnipeg Hospitality Award. He is a nominee for the Canada’s Top 40 under
40™ Award.
He is a member of the Canadian Association of Hispanists.

Winner to be announced on April 23rd, Cervantes Day and International Book Day.
The winner will get a Spanish Institute Gift Certificate for a 13-week Spanish course at The
Spanish Institute and will be entitled to the exclusive benefits as a student of The Spanish
Institute.
The Spanish Institute decision will be final.

14. One of our students writes from Bolivia
Navidad y Año Nuevo en Bolivia
Hay muchos fuegos artificiales para Navidad y Año Nuevo aquí.
En Nochebuena los fuegos artificiales comenzaron más o menos a las once. Continuaron hasta
pasadas las dos. En la casa donde vivimos, los oímos por todas partes. El ruido era muy fuerte.
El año pasado vivíamos en un hotel en el séptimo piso. Los fuegos artificialas fueron muy lindos.
Este año mi media naranja nos sorprendió. Alquiló un cuarto en el hotel del año pasado. Nuestra
hija durmió por la tarde para poder ver los fuegos artificiales a medianoche. Estábamos en el
décimo piso desde el balcón. Estuvieron mejor que los del año pasado. Por todas partes había
miles de fuegos artificiales. Le encantaron a nuestra hija.
Hasta luego, mis amigos. Voy a volver a casa el 21 de este mes.

Aprendo más español aquí. La familia que vive junto a nosotros, no habla inglés. Practico mucho
con los muchachos y Gloria. Mi hija ya sabe unas palabras. Juega con los chicos de siete y tres
años. Gracias a Dios los chicos pasan el tiempo jugando. Leo el periódico casi cada día. Cada
día aprendo más palabras.
