Writing Lab
English teachers, Lori Safford and Jade Clukey, recently created an opportunity for
CVA students to improve their writing skills. Based on research indicating that the
most effective way to increase writing skills is for students to receive one-on-one
assistance, they created a Writing Lab.
The Writing Lab is staffed by CVA Juniors and Seniors who are accomplished
writers in prose, lab reports, research papers, foreign language reports, and critical
analysis of scientific articles. CVA students Grant Erickson, Maddi Chamberlin,
Maria Leech, Erica Jenson, Kat Mirzan, and Liz Mutina are the mentors who are
available Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30-8:30 PM. In addition to
assisting students, these mentors also connect with the teachers to inform them
about how they assisted students.
Lori Safford commented, “colleges are demanding a high level of quality writing skills
and the lab is one of the things we are doing to ensure students are prepared. Also,
most colleges offer a writing lab and our students will know they can avail
themselves of this resource when they go to college.”
CVA Alumni Profile: The Man (Literally) Behind the Video,
Kyle Hockmeyer ‘93
If you’ve seen the new CVA video that was just released, then you know the
handiwork of CVA alum Kyle Hockmeyer ’93. Kyle is the founder of FieldStone
Media and handles all video production for the company. After CVA, he attended
Montana State University's Media and Theater Arts program; his initial foray into
digital media involved producing whitewater rafting videos in The Forks, Maine.
Kyle produced and directed The Maine Show, a half-hour program featuring
tourism destinations in Maine, and has shot video all over the world most notably
for the Eco-Challenge Adventure Race and Banjo Minnow Fishing Lure. Like
many other CVA grads, Kyle cites the school as having taught him great time
management skills: “CVA taught me that there is in fact quite a bit of time in the
day. CVA is just very effective at filling it up. My time management and
productivity were greatly enhanced by my CVA experience.” Kyle’s website is:

cut you a little deal.
Five CVA athletes to represent the U.S. at Junior World Championships
Carrabassett Valley Academy is pleased to announce the following athletes who have all earned the honor
of representing the USA at this year’s FIS Junior World Championships: Rollie Zagnoli ’14 (boardercross) ,
Keegan Kilbride ’14 (park & pipe skiing), Nessa Dziemian ’12 (moguls), and Mike Hayes from the CVA Weekend
Program (skiercross).
This major event will bring together the top junior competitors from across the globe to Valmalenco, Italy between
March 26th and April 6th. Competitors are invited based on their cumulative results throughout the season.
The results from the Junior World Championships will determine the best overall junior competitors in each
discipline and age class. The event is also a proving ground for those athletes that aspire to train and compete
for their national teams.
In addition to the above athletes, 2013 graduate Sam Morse qualified for the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski
Championships which took place in Jasna, Slovakia in early March. Morse earned a 7th place finish overall, 2nd in
his U18 age group.
“We are extremely proud to have five athletes from five different disciplines qualify for Junior Worlds this year,”
said CVA Head of School Kate Webber Punderson. “This is the most substantial representation we have ever
had for these events.”
2014 Scholarship Fundraiser: Raffle & Auction
A tremendous THANK YOU is in order for all those who helped us raise record revenues
at the recent 2014 Scholarship Fundraiser. Together we raised an impressive $93,000
for scholarship support at CVA. From those who donated raffle and auction items, signed
on as sponsors, stretched to buy a raffle ticket, jumped in to volunteer and help, placed a
bid on items or joined us for the evening, we hope that every person involved takes great
pride in knowing what a tremendous difference your support makes to the nearly half of
CVA students who receive financial assistance. The record revenues this year were due
in part to an increase in raffle ticket sales as well as a very successful auction, which
included 140 items at a wide range of price points. The online auction got great traction,
generating 124 bids before the actual event and professional auctioneers Rusty and Patty
Farrin from Farrin’s Country Auctions were back in the Valley and did a masterful job of
getting the rambunctious crowd to focus, bid and buy the 15 “live auction” items that
included luxury golf trips, Italian cooking classes and dinners, a daysail around Mt.
Dessert Island and even a decommissioned Spillway chairlift. One highlight of the event
was the showing of our new CVA video, recently created by CVA alumnus Kyle
Hockmeyer ‘93 who owns FieldStone Media in Rome, Maine. The $10,000 grand prize
winners were CVA alumni parents and board members Paul and Carol Fremont-Smith,
who generously donated the prize back to CVA for the Martha B. Webber Scholarship
Fund.

Alumni Event Wrap-up
1st Annual Ski Academy Alumni Reunion – Park City, Utah
Seven ski academies from New England hosted a joint alumni reunion in Park City,
Utah in the middle of February. This event was the first all-academy reunion and ski
weekend, and it was a huge success. The skiing portion of the weekend started out
on Friday as a small group of alums chased the conditions over to Little Cottonwood
Canyon to ski Alta. It had snowed just under a foot on Thursday night so the skiing
was very soft, especially for those who had just come in from New England.
On Saturday morning, alums awoke to the sound of avalanche control bombs and
knew it was going to be a good day. It had snowed more than 20” in the back bowls
at Park City Mountain that night, and the skiing was epic! There were packs of alums
from all of the schools who were going this way and that, and who were firmly
adhering to powder day rules (no waiting, please keep up/ie no friends on a powder
day!).
After a full day on the slopes, the group came back together for après ski at the High
West Distillery. It had been our hope for this first year’s event to get somewhere
around 40 people to attend the après party, so a space that would accommodate 60
people was rented. Apparently, there was more demand for this event than we
predicted, since our highest count of participants was nearly 80 people, and due to
fire code, High West had to turn a number of alums away! CVA was represented by
about a dozen alums (Nora Stowell, Abby Champagne, Shawn Miele, Mark Radcliffe,
Shelly Gillwald, Jim Fitlow, Sloane Johnson, Sam Sweetser, Jake Hardy, Porter
Stowell, Katie Van Riper, and more). Based on the success of this inaugural event,
we hope to do it again the 2nd weekend of February 2015 -- mark your calendar
now!
CVA Comes to Montana: CVA Bozeman Event at the Buck Sackery
Alex Buck ’05 hosted a CVA alumni gathering on February 12 in Bozeman,
Montana at his “Sackery,” which is where he puts together his Buck Products
backpacks and assorted other sewn items. There was a great turnout with alumni
ranging in years from 1998 - 2013. There is a great core of folks that have settled in
Bozeman and who have put their mark on the Gallatin Valley. It was great to see
everyone and to catch up!
If you would like to work with CVA to host an alumni event in your area, please
contact Sam Punderson: spunderson@goCVA.com.
Autograph Signing & Open House
Young skiers and snowboarders received a treat on February 21st. It was an exciting
afternoon as alumni Dan Marion ’05 (Dew Tour/X Games competitor, Ski the
East/Meathead Films athlete) and Alex Tuttle ’09 (U.S. Snowboard Team member,
2014 X Games silver medalist) talked about their athletic accomplishments and
autographed posters for the young athletes who stopped by. Families took tours of
our new academic center and enjoyed refreshments. Thank you Dan and Alex!
CVA Helps Special Olympians Reach Gold
Every year, over 1,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers converge onto Sugarloaf
Mountain for one of the largest Special Olympics Winter Games in the country. Now in its
45th year, the games have evolved to offer alpine/nordic skiing, snowshoe racing, and
speed skating.
The student-athletes of Carrabassett Valley Academy were among the hundreds of
volunteers who were on hand Jan. 26 to 28, for the three-day event. Every year the CVA
students look forward to upholding a treasured community tradition of fully committing to
the athletes and the activities of the Winter Games at Sugarloaf for two days.
