Engage … Educate … Empower
A Few Words about DECA. . .
DECA Ontario is a non-profit educational organization run by an elected Board of Directors and is
affiliated with International DECA. The Board of Directors takes direction from Chapter Advisors, the
Provincial Student Executive, a Corporate Advisory Board, a teacher Advisory Council, student members
and teacher advisors who represent their individual schools. Chapter Advisors are teachers of Business
Education or those interested in promoting Business Education.
As an educator you can easily form a chapter in your school. A minimum of ten members is required to
form a chapter.
The number of students representing each chapter varies from school to school. Through conferences
and competitions, chapter clubs and activities, DECA provides students with an opportunity to develop
and apply the skills they have learned in class and the club. Furthermore, DECA activities contribute to
the development of competencies needed for careers in management, marketing and entrepreneurship.
DECA activities also serve to boost students' self-confidence and self-image and provide a forum where
students from various high schools can meet.

What Students Do in DECA
Competitive Events are one aspect of the total DECA program of student activities. Other activities
include:
 Attending Professional Conferences
 Sharing Ideas With Other Members
 Developing Leadership Skills
 Aiding Local Charities
 Promoting Marketing & Entrepreneurship
 Teaching Organizational Skills
 Improving Listening & Speaking Skills
The competitive events are learning activities designed to extend students' interests and competencies
in the business field, particularly in Marketing.
There are basically FOUR types of competitions from which students can participate:
1. COMPETENCY BASED SERIES EVENTS
Students pick an occupational area in which they wish to compete. They should choose an area in which
they are interested in or have some work experience. Students have an option of choosing either an
Individual or Team based event. For the Team based events, students work in pairs to complete the oral
role-play. The Competency Based Series Event Competition is two-fold:


The first part involves a comprehensive multiple-choice test in general marketing and the
category specific marketing topic.
The second part of the competition involves a role-playing event in which students are required
to solve a problem by putting what they have learned into action. Students are given a written
"situation" to review. It may be a product or service to sell, a merchandising decision or a
problem in human relations at work. Students are allowed a pre-set amount of time (10
minutes for Individual Series and 30 minutes for Team Events) to review the situation and to
develop a professional approach to solving the problem to present to a judge.
Following this, participants are examined one-on-one by a judge and asked how they would solve the
problem. The judge, a qualified business professional, evaluates the students' responses and records
the results on an evaluation form which has been developed especially for each competitive area.

Board Support (Optional)
STEP THREE: PAYING MEMBERSHIP FEES
In order to provide services desired by its
members, all Chapter Associations must have
funds. DECA obtains its funds by charging dues.
The dues to join DECA Ontario are $35 per
student PLUS $30 per School Chapter (this fee is
waived for new chapters).
STEP ONE: CHAPTER EXECUTIVE
Select a student executive to represent your
DECA Chapter with you as the Chapter Advisor.
Place these names on the enclosed DECA
Student Executive Form and submit it to the
Student Executive Officer Team.
STEP TWO: DECIDE ON TYPE OF CLUB
There are two basic options:
1. FORM AN EXTRA-CURRICULAR CLUB FOR
DECA
Elect an executive and work with students (as
many or as few as you wish) who will
participate at the Regional and Provincial
Competitions. Devote your time to discussing
the occupational areas and have the students’
practice mock competitions.
Should your
students place in the top four in their
competitive event, they are given the option of
participating at the International Career
Development Conference (ICDC. The cost of
this competition is borne by the individual
students. Your chapter may wish to fundraise
to provide funds for the students if they win the
right to participate at the ICDC.
2. FORM A CO-CURRICULAR CLUB FOR DECA
Each student in your class would join DECA and
you would allot class time for DECA concepts in
your curriculum. The executive would be
selected from your class to assist you. The
entire class would be involved in DECA. Now,
follow the same guidelines as in Option 1.
ALL membership and regional registration is
done online and must be SUBMITTED no later
than October 12, 2013. The system will literally
be shut down at midnight on the 12th and will
NOT be unlocked.

OF A NEW CHAPTER CONTACT:
Olga Plagianakos at olga@deca.ca
This past April, the DECA Ontario Team travelled to Salt Lake City, Utah to compete against
approximately 15,000 students. A great sense of camaraderie developed among the 550 members of
the Ontario team. As well, our students enjoyed meeting students from the fifty states, Manitoba,
Guam, Germany, and Puerto Rico.
Of the 340 competitors, 296 medals and 26 trophies were won!!!
Outstanding results to say the least!
Leadership Development Experience
Each school will be allowed to select students to attend
the Provincial Leadership Development Experience
workshops based on their membership (one spot for
every 10 students). Students must be in grade 9 or 10.
Students
must
possess
potential
leadership
characteristics and must attend all workshops at the
Provincial competition.
At the end of the Provincial LDA workshops, each school
will have up to TWO LDA spots for the Internationals. A
deposit of $100 PER spot must be submitted by January
16, 2014 to secure a spot. If no students ultimately
wish to attend ICDC, (must decide by February 12), the
deposit will be returned. Cancellation after this date,
the deposit will be forfeited.
This candidate must be a DECA member in good
standing and have attended Provincials as either a
competitor or an LDA and may be in grade 9, 10, or 11.
The decision remains with the school Advisor.
