Mission Viejo High School French 1 Mme Gawel frances.gawel@svusd.org Bonjour et Bienvenue à la classe de Français 1! We have a fun and challenging year ahead of us. As you make your way through Bon Voyage 1, you will begin to speak French by learning and using new vocabulary and grammar structures, and you will further your knowledge of Francophone culture throughout the world. You will learn these new things through a variety of ways from listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Games and activities make learning fun in a foreign language class as you acquire new skills. To make learning enjoyable, you must do your part. Below is what I require of you: Don’t talk when someone else, especially me, is talking. Raise your hand to speak. Everyday bring your book, workbook, notebook, paper, pen, etc. No eating, drinking (except water), or gum chewing during class. Hand in assignments on time. I do NOT take late work. Try your hardest. Lack of effort will not get you the grade you want. Parlez français. Otherwise you’ll never learn to speak. A positive attitude will enhance all that you do and make learning enjoyable. Keep a notebook with 5 dividers with sections for entry/closing/reflections, vocabulary, class notes, homework and quizzes. 2 restroom/locker passes will be granted per semester redeemable at the end of the semester for 5 points each. As long as you do the above, we’ll have a low-stress and rewarding year together. If you do not do what I require, I must impose the following consequences: Warning Lunch detention Call home to parents Referral A few other things you and your parents need to know to make our year run smoothly: SUPPLIES You will need a notebook with 5 dividers, paper, pen, red pen for correcting, pencil, colored pencils, highlighter, a DRY ERASE MARKER (any color but yellow) and DRY ERASE ERASER (an old sock or rag will also work). BOOK We use Bon Voyage 1 and will cover chapters 1 – 7. HOMEWORK Homework is assigned nightly. It’s worth two points if completed with effort. I do not accept late homework or give half credit. Please check my website if you aren’t sure of the assignment. The website is accessible through the district website under teacher web pages. TESTS AND QUIZZES We have regular vocabulary quizzes to master new words. They are essentially spelling tests in French. You must be able to write the words in French as well as know their meaning in English. There are occasional grammar quizzes as well. Tests include grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading, and writing short paragraphs. I do not have a set day for quizzes or tests, and I generally give advance notice before they are given. Though I rarely give pop quizzes, I reserve the right to do so! Quizzes are worth 10 to 25 points. Tests range from 25 to 100 points. GRADING 90 to 100% is an A. 80 to 89.9% is a B, etc. PROJECTS There is at least one project that accompanies each unit in the textbook. You will also do Cultural Projects to broaden your knowledge of the Francophone world. I’ll be giving out a description of those in the next few weeks. FRENCH CLUB All students in French classes are encouraged to join our French Club. We learn about and celebrate the major French holidays. We have movie night with a fondue or crepe theme at least once a semester. We participate in whatever Francophone cultural event comes to the area. We’ve seen Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Cirque du Soleil, Cyrano de Bergerac, and the Three Musketeers numerous times. Our year ends with a delicious dinner at C’est la Vie in Laguna Beach. . MAKE UP TEST DAYS AND EXTRA HELP Tutorial is the best time to make up a missed test. If a quiz was missed, you may make it up during tutorial on a day we agree upon. I am available at tutorial and lunch for extra help most days. Please schedule an appointment before hand for lunch help. I do have other meetings from time to time. Please have your parents sign below once you both have read the above details. Thank you.
