Based on the above information, what changes, challenges or improvements are being
implemented or experienced to impact the effectiveness of the program?
 Phase 1: We have implemented a snack calendar to ensure that fresh fruits/vegetables are
offered twice a week. We have also started using the YMCA CHLI Assessment to ensure
that we are offering healthy after school snacks every day of the week. Also, we have
begun using monthly themes to base our activities off of. The kids and staff sit down to
talk about what they want to learn about each month, and then staff put together activities
and group discussions based on these themes.

Phase 2: We have recently purchased more playground equipment to ensure that our kids
are staying active, enjoying the time they are active, and trying new activities. We have
also budgeted for being able to serve snack and offer milk and juice with the food we
serve.
Share at least one of the “success stories” or accomplishments that a participant has experienced
during each reporting period. This must be participant focused and aligned with the intent of
this award.


Phase 1: The following statement was put together by the YMCA Before & After School
Care Director and the involved participant’s teacher:
o This participant comes to the YMCA After School Program on a full scholarship,
and was recommended to the YMCA by the school’s At-Risk Coordinator. She
comes from a single-parent home, and her dad’s job requires him to leave early
and return late. Because of these odd work hours, her brother was in charge of
her before and after school. This situation was hard for both siblings, and caused
her grades and attendance at school to drop and her homework completion to be
very sporadic. She began attending the Y After School Program, and after only
two weeks her teacher reported her reading and math test scores had greatly
improved and her homework was almost always completed on time. During her
time at the Y after school, she always focuses on getting her reading assignments
and other homework completed before she participates in other activities. A
major academic accomplishment for her this year was her project about Anne
Frank. She completed a report, designed and sewed a costume with the help of Y
staff, and put together a speech all during her time at the Y.

Phase 2:
o The kids in the YMCA Summer Day Camp programs have had an active Summer
with multiple and varied opportunities for physical activity. Monday-Wednesday,
the kids either walk or bike to different field trips around town such as the
Community Garden, Long-Term Care Facility, and the Library. Our Day Camp
counselors have reported that many of our kids are improving their biking skills
and are excited about being able to ride their bikes to their different activities
instead of riding in the YMCA van. The bikers are also learning about biking
safety, how to take care of their bikes, and how to fit themselves to their bikes.
o The YMCA has also been able to provide one snack to the kids each day this
Summer. Their snacks include foods such as fresh fruit, popcorn, granola bars,
and vegetables.
