A successful development process fulfills children and teens’ innate need to be loved, spiritually grounded, educated, competent, and healthy. At our Ys, we believe that all kids have unlimited potential. The values and skills learned early are vital building blocks for life, and young people deserve an opportunity to discover who they are and what they are capable of achieving. From the youngest in our childcare programs to the teens in our Teen Zone and Youth and Government programs, our Y gives kids a safe place to belong, build confidence and learn positive behaviors grounded in our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. What's Your Y Story: Daniel is a 5 year old boy who attends Judson and Brown Elementary. Daniel’s family life is difficult without much stability, and he frequently wonders where he will be staying and with whom each night. Daniel regularly acts out in school because of his parental insecurity and, as a kindergartener, has been sent to the principal’s office on numerous occasions. His teacher is exasperated with his behavior in the classroom. Daniel is enrolled in the YMCA School-Age program at Judson and Brown. The director and staff at the Y program have taken it upon themselves to ensure that Daniel’s experience with them is positive, encouraging and stable. LaRena Garcia, the site director, has stated “I refuse to give up on him.” The Y program has never seen any of the acting out behavior Daniel exhibits in his school day because he is valued and his emotions are understood by the caring YMCA staff. - Daniel, pictured to the right. 641 kids attended Adventure Day Camp 4,833 kids attended Camp Edwards 915 kids enrolled in pre-school and after-school licensed child care programs 5,418 kids attended Creative Before-& After-School Programs for Success (CAPS) 3,276 kids enrolled in 6,205 swim classes and took 31,025 lessons 117 kids participated in Teen Zone, LIT and Youth and Govement programs 28 kids enrolled in Parent Participation Pre-school Achieve Annual Report - YMCA of the East Valley | 5 "If you can dream it, then you can achieve it." - Zig Ziglar What's Your Y Story: “Model Legislature and Court is an organization that legitimately benefits every delegate that participates. It is not just a club, after-school program, or weekend activity that high school students join to mingle with friends and stay in a fancy hotel. MLC is an open forum for teenagers to express their beliefs without fear of being derided or being written off without a valid refutation. A delegate might be presenting a bill on what we think is the most ridiculous topic we’ve ever heard! But if that delegate believes in his or her idea, and is truly passionate about the bill, the other students will listen and hear the speaker out. Another great aspect of the program is how enlightening it can be. As a new delegate, you might have never known that a liberal and a conservative could be two of the closest friends you’ve ever seen. As a new advisor, you might have never known that teenagers are capable of this kind of a grasp on order, respect, and speaking. After only doing one year of Model Legislature and Court, I can say without hesitation that it has helped me become a better student, a better citizen, and a better person.” - Nick, pictured below at the California State Senate Chamber. 2,491 kids participated in youth sports, circus, dance, cheer, gymnastics, and karate classes 64 kids participated in the first year of the Summer Learning Loss Prevention program and, on average, reported an increase in grade level by 12% in mathematics and 78% in reading Inspire "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." - John Quincy Adams HEALTHY LIVING 7,140 hours were spent working out by 102 adults in the 12 Weeks of Fitness program 82 adults became more fit using our Personal Trainers making up about 682 hours of fitness. 125 weekly group exercise classes with an average of 2,420 participants, making a average of 125,840 participants this year! 67 participants enrolled in FREE Beaver Medical Health Education 55 participants improved their fitness while in our swim clubs 170 active older adults strengthened friendships and improved their health in our AOA Day Trips and Cooking for Life Clinics What's Your Y Story: Alice came to the Y after she was diagnosed with Arthritis and Sciatica in 2013. She was told by her physical therapist that she needed to exercise in the water. She decided to come to the Arthritis water exercise class. At first she was nervous because she was not a strong swimmer and did not have much experience exercising in the water. After a week in the class, she could tell that her back, muscles, and joints felt better. At first, she described her pain at a level 10. Now, with a combination of this class, medicine, and her therapy, Alice describes her pain level at a 2. She has tried other programs such as the Silver Sneakers and Thai Chi class. She loves being a part of the Y and loves how helpful and friendly the staff is. She explained that becoming a member here had impacted her life for the best. Annual Report - YMCA of the East Valley | 7 8 | Annual Report - YMCA of the East Valley SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The YMCA of the East Valley has so much more to offer than the traditional swim lessons and basketball for our youth. We strive to serve our community in a variety of ways. One of those ways is to engage our community through our special events. A large number of our special events are put on not only to serve our YMCA members, but also serve the community. We strive to provide everyone the opportunity to experience the YMCA. All of our branches within the YMCA of the East Valley Association offer special events from the Great All American Youth Circus, to the YMCA Run, to holiday events, and family date nights. Operation Thanksgiving at the Highland Family YMCA is an event taken on by staff, volunteers, and community organizations to ensure everyone in the community can receive a warm meal served by YMCA staff, good conversation, and entertainment they might not otherwise get. Community organizations donate supplies and volunteer. Each year, children, adults, and families come together as a community, uniting us all. Y CEO and community volunteer work together to beautify the outside of the A.K. Smiley Library for MLK Day of Service. 1,455 generous donations were made by 1,264 donors so that the Y could help open doors for others $393,245 was raised through our Annual Community Support Campaign to support our financial assistance program $466,329 was awarded for financial assistance for memberships, programs, and child-care $51,050 was raised to assist the Legal Aid program and give financial assistance to participants, allowing a total of 642 people served Together Annual Report - YMCA of the East Valley | 9 "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success." - Henry Ford What's Your Y Story: Family law matters can be extremely stressful and confusing for the individuals facing familial adversity. At YMCA Legal Aid, we take pride in helping our clients through this process with compassion and professionalism. We assist our clients with legal document preparation and offer them support while their family matters go through the judicial system. The director and staff at Legal Aid play a crucial role in helping individuals end abusive or unhealthy marriages and consistently ensure the safety and well-being of minor children involved in custody cases. Our low-income payment options make our services accessible to everyone in the community and make it easier for single parents or people that are unemployed to get quality legal assistance at an affordable price. Van Voorhis Anne Viricel Anita West Carolyn Whetzel Secretary Rich Haller Treasurer Peter Davis OUR MISSION The YMCA of the East Valley is an association of people of all ages, ethnic groups, and religious affiliations founded on Christian principles and dedicated to building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities through programs that develop spirit, mind, and body. OUR FOCUS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT - The values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people are making smarter life choices. Children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. HEALTHY LIVING - Being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind, and body. The Y is a place where you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together through our many family-centered activities. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY - We know that when we work as one, we move people and communities forward. That’s why we are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to give, join in, or advocate in the name of stronger communities. OUR VALUES CARING - Show a sincere concern for others. HONESTY - Be truthful in what you say and do. RESPECT - Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. RESPONSIBILITY - Be accountable for your promises and actions. OUR CAUSE Building the foundations of a stronger community Letter From The CEO Darwin Barnett Chief Executive Officer YMCA of the East Valley This year’s theme, “Together A Community” represents the importance of all of us as individuals to enrich the communities we serve. The Y’s impact throughout all of these 13 decades has made all of our communities stronger. This year we have continued that service and have focused on providing opportunities for children to grow and thrive, investing in our future leaders, and empowering our community to be healthy and active. This past year we served over 34,580 individuals through membership and programs. Staff and volunteers have been attentive to improving quality and deepening our relationships with those we serve. We’ve implemented many new strategies and the results are higher member retention and higher satisfaction scores. Throughout this report, you’ll see evidence of great work and commitment. The YMCA Annual Campaign was successful as hundreds of volunteers from our community raised nearly $400,000 to provide 5,000 youth and families the opportunity to participate and belong throughout the year. As a result, we were able to reach deeper into the community and offer a pathway for more youth to participate. This is your YMCA. We empower a community to grow stronger together. It has been my honor to be a part of this community and this organization that seeks to make a difference. 14 | Annual Report - YMCA of the East Valley STATEMENT OF REVENUE AND EXPENSES Unaudited Audited Revenue & Support 2013-14* 2012-13* Government Contracts $6,121,089 $6,893,929 Contributions $1,594,044 $629,920 Investments & Miscellaneous $281,911 $96,669 Child Care Fees $1,268,682 $1,254,190 Camping, Health & Fitness Services $1,326,957 $1,306,357 Membership Fees $2,244,988 $1,998,700 Special Events $158,419 $150,630 United Way $23,174 $23,230 Total Revenues $13,019,264 $12,353,625 Camping, Health & Fitness & Membership $4,051,955 $4,255,313 Childcare $2,356,139 $2,298,032 Before-and After-School Programs $4,191,841 $4,517,777 Management & General $1,198,340 $1,203,808 Total Expenses $11,798,275 $12,274,930 Change in Net Assets $1,220,989 $78,695 Expenses *Fiscal Year: July - June Annual Report - YMCA of the East Valley | Membership Categories Youth/High School - 1,021 Young Adults - 170 Adults - 681 Couples - 1,192 Families - 12,597 Seniors - 1,362 Total Number of Members - 17,023 1% 8% 6% 4% 7% Youth/High School Young Adults Adults 74% Couples Families Seniors 15 16 | Annual Report - YMCA of the East Valley 2013-2014 DONORS Alexis Aguilar-Garcia Mansie Booker Mrs. Heather Chittenden Judy Cole Joyce Crawford Angel Fratti Ashley Hernandez Bryan Kupecz Carolyn Mathers Sheila McKoy Diana & David McLaughlin Damon Needelman Bill & Casey Oesterlein Bernie O'Prey Kim & Jarod Pavese Jeri Lynn Quick Beverly Rainbolt Tracie Reading Maxime Rolle Guadalupe Sanchez Edward Schofield Fran Serrao Mrs. Skeens & Mrs. Bowkley's Kinder Classes Carrie Tripplett Dennis Warman Beverly Winchester AAA Professional Carpet Service Ron & Ellie Abshire Mary Ann Adams Pete Aguilar Melissa Aitkin Barbara Alejandre Wayne Alexander MaLuisa Alvarez Monica Andersen Liza Anderson Sue Angell Anneliese Armstead Karen Arnstein Clifford Arrogante Lupe Artis Donald Attaway Mary Jane Auerbacher Jim & Debbie Avakian Joe & Betty Avakian Kayla Baker Tina Baker-Locken Ken & Michelle Ballou Fred Bandel Craig Banta Kristen Barbee James Barber Susan Barbo Jean Bartley Helen Baty Michelle Baty Christine Bautista Daniel E.
