The Æsh Vol 1, #1 May 2001 A.D. / A.S. XXXVI Welcome to the first edition of the new newsletter of the Æthelmearc College of Heralds, the Æsh. This newsletter will include Letters of Intent, Letters of Report from kingdom decisions, and Letters of Acceptance and Return from the Laurel Queen of Arms. In addition, you'll find articles and practical advice on how to do the job of a herald here. Hopefully we'll even find space for some funny stuff (I used my funniness up last month, on the April Fools Letter). The normal editor, Richenda du Jardin, will be taking over with the next issue. This one is produced by a guest editor, Juliana de Luna. We both hope that you really enjoy this issue. Give feedback to Richenda at sewensel@bellatlantic.net and to Juliana at julias@pitt.edu. This is your newsletter, and we want it to be useful to you. This time, we have the new Internal Letter of Intent, two letters of Report, an updated version of the roster, and an article on "How to Document a Name." Enjoy! The article is the first in a series of articles I'm writing (that's Juliana), that were commisioned before I agreed to act as guest editor. I hope you find it useful! Future newsletters will include collated commentary from members of the College. That means you! We depend on you to do things like make decisions about names and armory. Even if you can only help on one or two items, or can check documentation online, it really helps. We'd love to have submissions. If you have something that you'd like to us to include, please send it to Richenda (the usual editor) either by e-mail to sewensel@bellatlantic.net or by mail to 1155 Portland St., Pittsburgh, PA 15206. We'll take anything: articles, cartoons, even heraldic jokes. Now, I have a few announcements (not as editor). First, I want to thank all the people who have helped me draft the Heralds Handbook, especially Edmond, Roana d'Evreux, Ailis Linne, and Margaret Makafee. In early June, we should have a final version ready for presentation to the College. Pennsic is coming! While it hardly seems possible, Pennsic is right around the corner. There are lots of great opportunities to learn about and practice the art of heraldry at Pennsic. I've seen the class list for heraldry, and there's lots of great stuff. In addition, lots of heralds are needed to cry the camp, to consult with submitters at Heralds Point, to help set up for courts, and to perform countless other tasks. Don't think that you're too inexperienced; I thought that once too. Then I went and worked, and the next thing I knew, I was running the place! Yup, that's right, one of our own is running the consulting table at Heralds Point this year. Stop by; I'll put you to work, or introduce you to someone who will. No matter how little experience you have, there's a job for you! In addition, I want to remind everyone that there's a heraldic display contest this year at Pennsic. Now is the time to get members of your group excited about creating new banners. A list of resources was published in the Æstel a few months ago. Most of the best articles mentioned are found at Modar's Heraldry Page: http://www2.kumc.edu/itc/staff/rknight/Heraldry.htm. Until I write again, I remain your servant Juliana de Luna What you'll find inside: Æthelmearc Internal Letter of Intent #50 ..... 2 Æthelmearc Letter of Report #47 ................ 9 Æthelmearc Letter of Report #48 .............. 16 The Roster...................................................... How to Document a Name ........................ 21 Æthelmearc Internal Letter of Intent #Æ50 May 2001 A.D. / A.S. XXXVI “Baby, it’s cold outside…” But that didn’t stop seven hundred SCAdians from converging on Rhydderich Hael for Ice Dragon 2001: A Hael Odyssey making it one of the largest indoor events in recent Æthelmearc history. Heralds’ Point was so full of heralds, I never got a chance to sit down. I’d like to thank Juliana de Luna, Richenda du Jardin, Cadell Blaidd du, Cigfran Caer Gwalch, and Nigel of Southwood for their work at the consult table, Otfrid Ammerthaler and Nigel of Southwood for making announcements and Edmund Tregelles and Elizabeth Law for the excellent job they did running courts. If I missed anyone, my apologies and thanks. If it seemed like there was a shortage of heralds behind the throne, it’s because they were all in front of it. Congratulations to Edmund Tregelles, Silver Buccle Herald and Diane the Scribner, pursuivant at large, for their induction into the Venerable Order of the Ice Dragon, the Hael’s service order. Congratulations to Hieronyma Holvoet von Dadizele, Hornwood Pursuivant on receiving her Award of Arms. Congratulations to Rhys ap Madog, who received his Award of Arms at the Pas d’Armes in Stormsport on March 3rd. Congratulations to Otfrid Ammerthaler, pursuivant at large; Elizabeth Law, Ice Dragon Pursuivant and Belgrande the Bladegatherer, Chancellor of the Exchequer for Æthelmearc’s College of Heralds, for their induction in the Order of the Keystone. Congratulations to Brian “Scoop” Leichester, Golden Alce Herald, on his induction into the Order of the Pelican. Vivant! Vivant! Vivant! “The hills are alive…” I built a couple of bird-feeders and set them out thinking I’d get the same assortment I got in the city, flocks of sparrows with an occasional robin. I’ve gotten sparrows, robins, wrens, chickadees, grackles, crows, cardinals, doves, juncos, redwings, and more. I’ve never before seen five blue-jays on a feeder at once. They were gone by the time I got my camera. There’s a woodpecker nearby. I’ve heard him, but I haven’t been able to lure him into view. Naturally, I’ve bought a couple of books on bird identification. Even the bird feeder thieves come in a variety. The squirrels are grey, black and flying. The chipmunks are long and short tailed. It’s nest building time. After I brush the cats, I take the combings outside and stuff them into the fork of a tree branch. It’s fun watching the little birds pull it out and fly off with it. I was told the biggest problem pond owners have is insects. I don’t have that problem. What the barn swallows and frogs don’t get by day, the bats get at dawn and dusk. I’ll be building bat, bird and butterfly houses this spring. There’s a den of foxes less than half a mile from my house, on one of my paths for afternoon walks. I’ve counted eight kits. Mother fox has informed me that I will keep a respectful distance. “Where the deer and the antelope play…” but they’ve got to learn not to play in traffic. I’ve acquired a second deer skin the same way I acquired the first. I even found the carcass in the exact same spot. I’ve gotten better with practice. The skinning process was easier this time and I got more of the hide in one piece. APRIL FOOL!!! By the time you get this, you should have also gotten Æthelmearc’s first April Fool’s day Letter of Intent. One Dagonell point for a job well done to Ailis Linne, Cadell Blaidd du, Myfanwy verch Rhiannon, Richenda du Jardin, Roana d’Evreux and the mastermind behind it all, Juliana de Luna. If this was a new submission, it would probably be returned for using three unrelated charges together in a group and for using a natural garden rose. However, the only difference between the submission and her currently registered device is the change of an allspice branch to a sprig of St. John’s wort. Everything else is grandfathered by virtue of being on her original device. 07.) Allesandra d’Avignon (F) – new name and device accepted Alexandra / Alessandra – Withycombe pg.13, (sn. Alexandra) & pg. 263 (sn. Sandra), the first date to 1205 and Alisaundre dated to a 14thc. Legendary mother of St. Thomas. Alixandre – 1292 Paris Census (Colm Dubh) Avignon – It has been in existence since at least the 6th century CE, and is mentioned as a city by Gregory of Tours (p. 146). Britannica online notes that Avignon became the capital of the papacy in 1309. “Argent, a fret within a bordure pean.” 08.) Happy May Day! Æthelmearc LoR #Æ 47 Page 11 12.) Gabrielle de Nevers (F) – new name and device accepted Gabrielle – The International Genealogical Index, published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Supplemental Disk 8, lists two occurrences of “Gabrielle” with this spelling: Gabrielle, daughter of Alin Doit and Blaise Nicot, christened 10 July 1577, Gimouille, Nievre, France Gabrielle, daughter of (given name unknown) Digron and Martine (last name unknow), christened 24 Sept. 1582 Gimouille, Nievre, France Withycombe (p. 124) gives "Gabriel(le)" as a header form, but says this spelling is a modern French form. The undated medieval spellings given are Gabriel and the Latin forms Gabriela and Gabella. de Nevers – Toponymic surname from the city of Nevers. The Regions of France by Wayne Northcutt, pg. 66 (pce) describes the city of Nevers as being known for its medieval and Renaissance architecture, some dating back to the eleventh century. Additional support for this construction is provided by the Armorial General by J.B. Rietstap, pg. 311 (pce) which lists the family of “de Nevers” as “anciens comtes” in an undated entry. Nevers is mentioned as a city by Gregory of Tours (p. 433), so it has been in existence since at least the 6th century CE. “Vert, on a bend gules fimbriated between two cats sejant guardant a rebec argent.” 13.) Gaspar del Hoyo (M) – new name and device accepted Gaspar – Spanish Names from the late 15th C. by Juliana de Luna cites 4 instances of “Gaspar” del Hoyo – “Catálogo de Pasajeros A Indias” cites Jian del Hoyo from “Sebastián Rodríguez” in 1540 (entry #1385). “Sable, a sword inverted Or distilling a goutte argent between flaunches ermine.” 14.) Katja Davidova Orlova Khazarina – name registered August 1996, change of device returned for re-draw, new badge returned for conflict Device: “Azure, three catamounts sejant guardant argent, and a bordure argent.” Badge: “Azure, a catamount sejant guardant argent.” There were no conflicts found against the device. It’s actually a simplification of her current device, “Azure, three catamounts sejant guardant argent, and a bordure argent semy of stars of David azure.” however the miniature is unsuitable for forwarding to Laurel. Therefore I am returning it for a re-draw. After the submission has acceptable black and white outline drawings for the full size black and white as well as miniatures, I will forward it on the next External Letter that I send out. The badge conflicts with Katrine de Baillie du Chat “Azure, a domestic cat sejant on a base embattled all argent.” 1 CD for the removal of the secondary charge. It is also an exact conflict with Jordre Pargon of Windhover's Reach, “Azure, a snow leopard sejant argent, spotted sable.” Marking does not count for difference, nor does head position. 15.) Keran Roslin (F) – new name and device accepted Keran – The name of the wife and queen of Lesser Amenia (Cilicia) during the reign of King Lewon (Levon) Nerssessian, V. The documentation that appeared on the ILoI will appear on the XLoI. I did not reproduce it here to conserve space. 17.) Michelina Cenomani da Trento (F) – new name accepted, device returned Michelina – Arval, Feminine Given Names from the Online Catasto of Florence of 1427 cites this spelling. "Patron Saints Index: Michelina of Pesaro"(http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintm55.htm), says that Michelina of Pesaro (also known as Michelina Metelli) lived from 1300 to 1356; she was widowed young and eventually became a Franciscan tertiary; she was beatified in the 18th century. Cenomani – Ellis, Celt and Roman cites this as the name of a Celtic tribe in Roman Italy. (pce) The online Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th Edition, says, under the heading "Gaul" (http://www.bartleby.com/65/ga/Gaul.html) "In Roman Gaul it often became customary to call the chief center of a tribe or the country around it by some form of the tribe’s name. Many of these names survive today. Le Mans, which got its name from the Cenomani, is mentioned in Gregory of Tours (p. 157). A search using google.com found the following site: http://users.bart.nl/~roestb/franciscan/franautr.html, that listed "Richardus Cenomagus (Cenomani/Richard Le Mans, d. 1552/3 in Chartres)". Trent – The online Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th Edition, says, under the heading "Trent" (http://www.bartleby.com/65/tr/Trent.html) "Ital. Trento, Latin Tridentum, city (1991 pop. 101,545), capital of Trentino-Alto Adige and of Trent prov., N Italy, on the Adige River and on the road to the Brenner Pass. It is an industrial and tourist center. Manufactures include leather goods, machinery, metals, textiles, printed materials, and food products. Probably founded in the 4th cent. B. C., Trent was later the seat of a Lombard duchy (6th cent.) and of a Frankish march (8th cent.)" “Azure, a chalice and on a chief argent, a natural dolphin naiant azure.” Conflict with Dierdriana of the Misty Isles, “Azure, a lotus goblet argent and on a chief argent three lotus blossoms inverted throughout gules”. There is a CD for the changes to the tertiaries, but nothing else. Happy May Day! Æthelmearc LoR #Æ 47 Page 13 18.) Muriel ingen Ghiolla Chomhgaill (F) – originally submitted as Muriel inghean Giolla Comqaill – new name and device accepted. On the advice of my internal commentators, the name was changed to make it internally consistent. Muriel – Withy, pg. 224 “probably of Celtic origin” … “first found in Brittany and Normandy in the 11 th C” Giolla Comgaill -- O’C&M (pp. 111-12) give a number of names of the form, although not this particular one, of "Gilla [name]: Giolla [name]" meaning "servant of [name]" (generally that of a saint). The closest seems to be "Gilla Comaill: Giolla Chomhghaill" (meaning "servant of St. Comgall") and citing the 11th c. poet Gilla Comaill Ua Slébéne. Comgaill – A ‘modern’ Gaelic spelling can be found in MacLysaght, pg. 62 (sn Coyle). O’C&M , pg. 55, gives “Comgall”, of which “Comgaill” is intended to be the genitive. It should be noted the submitter’s mundane surname is Coil. “Barry Or and azure, a cat sejant contourney coward sable.” 19.) Otelia d’Alsace – name registered November 1998, new badge returned. “[Fieldless], a cross clechy Or.” Conflict with: Ian Bruce MacRae, (January 1983, Caid) “Gyronny azure and gules, a key cross Or.” A key cross is almost identical to a cross clechy. The only difference is that the key cross has little ornamental "knobs" on the points. Also conflicts with Edward Cavendish, “Per bend azure and gules, a cross formy Or” A cross clechy was originally a variant form of the crosses formy and patonce, according to the Pic Dic. 20.) Phillippa Coleman (F) – new name originally submitted as Phillippia Coleman accepted. Phillippa – Withycombe, pg. 245, gives “Philippa” and “Phillippa”, but no evidence for the “-ia” ending. Coleman – header form from R&W, this spelling dates from 1066 as given name and 1166 as surname. 21.) Persephone of Troyes (F) – new name returned Persephone – registered in Caid, 1980 (Persephone of Woodland) Late 15th Century of English Names Revived by Bardsley shows names such as Hercules and Percival. See precedence on name Evander of Middleham More (Sept. 1998) Troyes – Dictionaire des noms de lieus de France (Dictionary of Place Names in France) While the submitter has proven that the names of deities and legendary figures have been used as human names in the past, there is no documentation that the name Persephone was ever used as such. A unique registration more than twenty years old cannot be used as documentation. This name violates RfS I.3.b Presumptuous Claims. 22.) Rolland of Hunter’s Home (M) – new name and device returned Rolland – Withycombe, pg. 256, dated from 1086, found under header form Roland Hunter’s Home – SCA branch name registered via East in September 1991. “Per fess azure and vert, on a fess argent three hunting horns sable a canton Or.” The Rules for Submission, I.3 Inappropriate Claims states “A name and piece of armory may reinforce each other and appear to make a claim that is not perceived in either item by itself. If someone reasonably educated in period and modern history and culture would perceive a claim, that claim will be held to exist even if it is unintentional.” The combination of the name Rolland with hunting horns was too strongly reminiscent of Charlesmagne’s peer. Happy May Day! Æthelmearc LoR #Æ 47 Page 14 23.) Remus Fletcher – name registered August 1990, new badge returned “Or, a chevron inverted gules, in chief two hurts.” Rules for Submission, VIII.4.b. Modern Insignia - “Overt allusions to modern insignia, trademarks, or common designs may not be registered.” This submission was perceived as a 1970’s “smiley face” to both heralds and non-heralds alike. On a sad note, the inventor of the smiley face died last week. 24.) Robert Marston (M) – new name and device accepted Robert – Reaney & Wilson, pg. 380, (sn. Robert) This spelling dated to 1066 Withycombe, pg. 254, (sn. Robert), cites its use in England from the time of the Norman Conquest and dates the form “Robert(us)” to 1071-5 and to the Domesday Book, 1086. Marston – Reaney & Wilson, pg. 300 (sn. Marston), <de Marston> dated to 1349. <Marsten> dated to 1565. “Azure, a mullet of four points between four lozenges, a bordure argent.” I believe the submission is clear of Rivenstar, Barony of “Azure, a riven star argent” with one CD for the addition of an ordinary, one CD for the addition of secondary charges and possibly one CD for the difference between a mullet of four points and a riven star, whatever the latter may be. 25.) Roana d’Evreux – name registered September, 2000 change of device accepted “Argent, three trees eradicated sable.” Her old device, also registered September 2000, “Argent, a dexter tierce purpure, a tree eradicated sable.” is to be released if this passes. 26.) Siobhan ní Filidheacht (F) – change of name to Sibán inghean Ragnall, originally submitted as Sibán ingen Ragnall accepted. Original name registered before 1980, listed in O&A as 2/80 Sibán – early period form. O’C&M, pg. 165, (sn. Sibán) used 11 th c. on ingen – ‘daughter of’, I’ve changed it to the earlier spelling to make the name internally consistent on the advice of my internal commenters. Ragnall – Viking name adopted in Ireland Ragnall Ua Dálaig died 1161 O’C&M, pg 154, (sn. Ragnall) 5-1/2) Alina Marie de Valenciennes – name registered March 1998, resubmitted device. “Per bend gules and sable, a bend sinister between a sun in his splendor and a lion’s head cabossed Or. Conflict with Zinaida Likhitovna Umanskaya "Per bend sinister gules and sable, a bend sinister between a pomegranate and a bear's head erased Or." with only 1 CD for changes to the type of the secondary charges. The submitter will be notified that the resubmission must have black and white line drawings for the full scale and miniature submissions to be acceptable. In Service, Dagonell Æthelmearc Letter of Report #Æ 48 January 27th, 2001 A.D. / A.S. XXXV 01.) Æthelmearc, Kingdom of – new company name (The Company of the Sylvan Hounds) returned and badge held. In May 1999, Laurel returned AEthelmearc, Kingdom of, Order name for Order of the Sylvan Nightingale citing: “The order name is being returned for not following the requirements of the rules for order names. The moreso since the definition for "sylvan" being relied upon as being period appears to make the word a noun rather than an adjective. RfS III.2.b.ii. requires that "Names of orders and awards must follow the patterns of the names of period orders and awards.” “[Fieldless], a demi-greyhoud rampant contourny argent collared gules, sustaining on a roundel gules an escarbuncle argent.” While the badge is passable, I don’t think it should be separated from the company name. Therefore I am holding the badge until a suitable name for the company can be submitted. Currently, Silver Buccle, Gage and Garnet Heralds are involved in an e-mail discussion with the head of the order to re-work the submission. Anyone who wishes to be involved should contact us via e-mail. 02.) Alana Griffin (F) – new name and device accepted Alana – Tangwystyl found “Alana filia eius” on pg. 112 of Poll Taxes of 1377,1379 & 1381 Part I: BedfordshireLeicestershire by Fenwick, Carolyn C. (under Derryshire: 1381 High Peak Wapentake) Griffin – Reaney & Wilson, pg. 206, (s.n. Griffin) cites Robert Griffin in 1197 (Note from Garnet: It’s also the submitter’s mundane surname) “Sable, a griffin segreant Or, winged argent, maintaining an acorn Or.” Note from Garnet: A number of commenters cited Laurel letter June 1996 “… the names Morgana and Alana, as well as any other similarly feminized masculine names for which there is no evidence of period use (and which have not already been declared SCA-compatible), are not considered SCA-compatible.” However, since the above documentation cites evidence of period use, the previous Laurel decision no longer applies to Alana. 03.) Aminah al-Raqqasah (F) – new name accepted and device returned Aminah – taken from A List of Arabic Women’s Names by Da’ud ibn Auda (http://www.s-gabriel.org/docs/arabicwomen.html) al-Raqqasah – English-Arabic Dictionary Romanized by Edward Elias, 3rd ed., P. Shalom Publishers, Inc. pg 47. Reference taken from Academy of St. Gabriel Letter #731 (pce) “Purpure, in fess an increscent, a roundel and a decrescent argent.” Conflict with: Fiacha Suileach “Per pale azure and purpure, in fess an increscent argent, a bezant, and a decrescent argent.” One CD for the field. However since the change in charge tincture affects less than half of the charges, a second CD cannot be counted for changes to the charge tincture. Happy May Day! Æthelmearc LoR #Æ 48 Page 16 04.) Anna Malakina – name change in process (XLoI #Æ46, dated 01/10/01), resubmitted device accepted “Or, three rustres gules.” Her previous device submission, “Or, on a lozenge gules, three bezants one and two.” was returned in-Kingdom for a technical violation of the rules for submission 05.) Angus the Bull (M) – new name and device accepted Angus – Withycombe, pg. 25, (sn. Angus) “is identical with the Irish Aonghus, from Old Irish Aengus, ‘one choice’. It was the name of a 9th C. saint, Bishop of Clonenagh, as well as of a legendary hero” the Bull – Reaney & Wilson, pg. 71, (s.n.Bull), cites, Hulle le bule 1201, William le Bole 1214 and Ralph le Bulle 1288 There was some question as to whether the name was appropriate as Angus is also the name of a breed of cattle. While I was pondering this, I received the latest issue of Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine in the mail. The villain of the cover story was Angus the Bull. Case closed “Per fess sable and argent, a goat’s head erased between three gates counterchanged.” A number of commentators wondered why a goat’s head was used instead of a bull’s head. The SCA does not allow you to use mundane family arms. However, the main charges may be used in a different arrangement. Hence, goats and gates to match his family’s arms. 06.) Arabella Macgrath (F) – new name accepted Arabella – Withycombe, pg. 29, (sn. Arabel(la)), cites Arabella, wife of John de Montpyncon in 1255 Macgrath –Black, pg. 505, (sn. Macgrath) “An Irish form of Gaelic Macrath (Macrae)” Under Macrae, “Alexander Macrad is cited to 1225. According to Clan MacRae Online’s history of the name MacGrath (http://www.clanmacrae.org/documents/namehist.htm), the byname Macgrath derives from the personal name “MacRaith” and cites that Magrath O’Hagan, Lord of Cinel Fergus was slain in 1081. 07.) Cynthia Tower the Beloved (F) – new name and device returned Cynthia – The submitter’s legal given name as listed on her driver’s license (pce) Tower – Reaney & Wilson, 3rd ed. pg. 452, identifies a Gilbert le Tower in 1255 Beloved – The OED, 2nd ed. vol. II, identifies “beloved” as an adjective meaning “loved” with dating used as early as 1398. An example of usage cited from 1535 is “…for thy beloved Abraham’s sake.” (pce) “English bynames were not formed from adjectival past participles and previous Laurels have been returning names for that reason.” LoAR 7/99 Atenveldt “Corwynn the Lost”. Additionally, Laurel has returned ‘the Unshaven’ 3/98, ‘the Amazed’ 5/97, ‘the Untamed’ 8/96, ‘the Brown Eyed’ 9/94, and ‘the Distracted’ 4/94. As the submitter does not allow for major changes such as the dropping of an element, the name must be returned. “Gules, on a tower argent a heart gules, an orle of chamomile flowers argent seeded Or.” No conflicts were found, however since the name is being returned, the device must be returned as well. Happy May Day! Æthelmearc LoR #Æ 48 Page 17 08.) Diederic van Flandres (M) – new name accepted and device returned Diederic – Flemish, 1479-1576 taken from “Flemish Names from Bruges” (http://www.sgabriel.org/docs/bruges) van Flandres – Flemish, 1280-1400 see Academy of St. Gabriel letter #1295 (pce) “Per chevron azure and vert, two compass stars argent and a butterfly Or.” Conflict with: William MacCrimmon “Per chevron azure and vert, two mullets of four points and a tree blasted and eradicated argent.” The fields are identical. There is 1 CD for the change in type and tincture of the bottom charge, however there is no difference between the upper charges “The overwhelming visual similarities between a mullet of four points and a mullet of four greater and four lesser points/compass star, both of which are nonperiod charges, mandates against granting a … CD for this relatively minor difference.” (LoAR, June 1995, Da’ud ibn Auda) 09.) Georg Eisenfaust – name registered September 1996, resubmitted device returned “Argent, on a pall sable, a sinister gauntlet clenched between three octagons argent.” Conflict with Mathias Sicco von Hagen “Argent, a pall voided sable.” Traditionally, voiding is the equivalent of adding a tertiary charge (LoAR, 12/92) therefore there is only one CD for changes to the type and number of tertiariers. His previous submission “Argent, a sinister gauntleted fist on a chief sable, three octagons argent.” was returned at kingdom, but the reason is not indicated. 10.) Giovanni Magrino (M) – new name and device accepted Giovanni – “Italian Names from 1427” (Online Catasto) lists Giovanni as the #1 most frequent male name. Also Giovanni is a header form id de Felice (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ferrante/catasto (pce) Magrino – de Felice (s.n. Magri) lists Magrino as an alternate form “Argent, on a pile azure between two money bags sable, a lymphad with sails furled argent.” 11.) Honorée d’Avallon (F) – new name accepted and device returned Honorée – An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris (Colm Dubh) cites “Honorée [une] nièce” (pce) (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/paris.html) d’Avallon – French Names from Two Thirteenth Century Chronicles - Place Names Used in Locative Surnames (Arval Beniecoeur) lists “Avallon” under “Place Names used in Locative Surnames” and states that the surname would be constructed with “de” (pce) (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/crusades/crusadesLieus.html) “Purpure, two horses rampant addorsed argent.” Conflict with Beautrice Hammeltoune “Fieldless, two horses rampant addorsed tails entwined argent.” Her resubmission is in ILoI #Æ 50. 12.) Ian Owen Brady – name registered June 1998, new badge returned “Or, a squirrel sejant erect sable maintaining in dexter forepaw a sword bendwise sinister and in the sinister forepaw a tankard argent.” Conflict with Dieter des Schwarzen Eichkatchens “Per pale gules and argent, a squirrel sejant erect sable maintaining a sword inverted argent.” One CD for the change to the field. Happy May Day! Æthelmearc LoR #Æ 48 Page 18 13.) Jacopo di Niccolo – name registered January 1997, new badge returned “[Fieldless], on a quatrefoil erminois, a sea-lion rampant maintaining a bow gules.” The emblazon is not recoverable from the blazon. The depicted charge is not a quatrefoil. 14.) Katherine Sinclaire – name registered January 1998, change of device accepted “Per pale sable and argent, two swans rising respectant, wings elevated and addorsed, on a chief four increscents all counterchanged.” If this device is registered, her old device “Per pale sable and argent, two swans naiant respectant counterchanged.” will be released. 15.) Lothar von den Hügelvolk (M) – new name accepted Lothar – Bahlow, pg. 344, lists “Lothar” as a header form. Also, “Lothar” was the name of the Holy Roman Emperor in period. Gregory of Tours cites several kings and sons of kings in the Merovingian dynasty named Lothar Lothar I (died 561) was the son of King Clovis. Lothar I’s grandson was Lothar II (died 629) Von den Hügelvolk – Deutch for “of the hill folk” I will suggest Hügelmann ‘hill-man’ as an alternative I caught the SNL reference as did most everybody else. However, I couldn’t decide if a translation into a foreign language still counted as an ‘obtrusive modern reference’ I’m letting Laurel set the precedent. 16.) Roswitha von Pirmasens (F) – new name and device passed Roswitha – “Medieval Sourcebook: The Plays of Roswitha” http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/roswithatoc.html) Roswitha is a Benedictine nun from Gandesheim in Saxony, known as Hrotsvitha or Roswitha (ca. 935 ca. 975) von – German for ‘from’ Pirmasens – The German city of Pirmasens was founded in the 8th century http://www.bartleby.com/65/pi/Pirmasen.html) The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 2001 “Per chevron azure and sable, a chevron between in canton a heart and in base a tower Or.” 17.) William le Forestier (M) – new name accepted William – Withycombe, pg. 293, (sn. William) “was introduced into England by the Normans in the 11th c., from which time it has held its place as one of the commonest men’s names” Forestier – Dauzat (sn. “Foresti”) lists “Forestier” as a sub-form, as “<<garde forestier>>” (forest guard, I believe) le Forestier – “16th Century Norman Names” (Cateline de la Mar) cites several examples of surnames constructed as “le” + profession (Marchant, Marinier, etc.) (pce) Reaney and Wilson, pg. 174 (sn. Forester), gives Robert le Forestier to 1322. Æthelmearc College of Heralds Roster May 2001 A.D. / A.S. How to Document a Name (not quite within an inch of its life) Sooner or later, everyone is left staring at the section of the bottom of the Name Submission Forms, where it says "Name Documentation and Consultation Notes." This will help you figure out what to put in that space, to give the people you help the best chance to have their name pass without problems. What Sources to Use While you can get period names from anywhere, including history books, encyclopedias, and dictionaries, the names found there are often changed to be more familiar to the modern ear. For example, Christopher Columbus was known to his Spanish contemporaries as Cristobal Colon. So to find good period forms of names, you have to go to books that don't modernize them. Luckily, lots of heralds before you have found books like that and created lists of period names in their period forms. So, next month, I'll give you a list good books and articles you can use to document names. In the meantime, there are also lots of articles on the World Wide Web, covering a wide variety of times and places. Some good locations to check are: http://www.sca.org/heraldry The Laurel Home Page http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names Arval's Names Page http://www.s-gabriel.org The Academy of Saint Gabriel Library When someone wants help with a name that you can't document, don't despair: ask for help. Use the Æthelmearc Heralds mailing list, or SCAHRLDS. People there will help you (and don't bite!). If you'd rather, your regional herald should be able to either help you or refer you to someone who can. In addition, consultation tables are run at kingdom events by experienced heralds with more resources: ask for help there. How to write down what you've found So,once you've researched a name, you need to write down what you've found on a submission form. The first thing to remember is "Be truthful" - the people who read submissions know more than you do and tend to assume that misstatements are "trying to get something over on the College." Laurel gives the submitter the benefit of the doubt, so don't feel like you need to make the case for a name better than it is. For each name element, list (1) the source that you got it from (for the ones in the list below, usually the author alone is enough; otherwise, give enough that we can figure it out), (2) an accurate summary of the relevant information, and (3) your conclusion. Don’t just give a source and page number; a name documented like that can be returned. Remember, you can usually register header forms (i.e. the standard modern form of a name, listed at the beginning of a section) even if that spelling is not dated to period. So, here are some examples: Robin Hood: Withycombe (under the heading Robert) says that 'Robin' "was in the 13th c more usual than Robert itself" and dates that spelling to 1200, 1205, 120, and 1276. Reaney and Wilson (under Hodd) give Hood as a header form and date 'Robert Hood' to 1230. Christopher Robin: Christopher is a header form in Withycombe; many period citations are given (but not with that spelling), including 'Christopherus' 1201-3, 1220 and 'Cristofur'1513. Reaney and Wilson (under Robins) date Richard Robin to c. 1248. Leifr Eiríksson: Geirr Bassi says that a 'Leifr' was recorded in the Landnámabók, an Old Norse listing of folks living in Iceland. 'Eiríkr' was recorded a dozen times in the same source. On p. 17, Geirr Bassi explains that 'Eiríkr' must be put in the genitive (posessive) before adding 'son'. For men's names ending with -r, the -r becomes -s, giving 'Eiríkson'. Hope you enjoyed this! Next month, we'll talk about sources for documenting names from the British Isles. Juliana de Luna
