1.
Students transferring from a community college may transfer up to 12 criminal justice credits into the major. Additionally,
statistics courses equivalent to MAT 311 from a community college will be accepted into the major. We accept courses
equivalent to CRJ 101, CRJ 201, CRJ 202 and/or CRJ 204. The department does not acknowledge any course from a
community college as upper level.
Students transferring from a four-year institution may transfer more than 12 credits into the major. The Chair will make a
determination as to which CRJ courses are transferable.

If you plan on transferring to the Criminal Justice Department at Buffalo State College, it is highly advisable that you take an
AA or AS program rather than an AAS program at a community college. The Criminal Justice Department at Buffalo State will
only take up to 12 credits of criminal justice courses from any community college into its major curriculum, regardless of how
many criminal justice courses a transfer student has taken at a community college.
3.
Buffalo State College does not accept police training or military training as equivalent to any criminal justice coursework.
4.
The Criminal Justice major core classes required for graduation are:






CRJ 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice
CRJ 201 Criminal Law
CRJ 202 The Police Process
CRJ 204 The Correctional Process
CRJ 303 Criminal Justice theory and Ideology
CRJ 315 Research Methods in Criminal Justice
5.
If you wish, you may sign up for a concentration in the major: Policing, Corrections, or Intelligence Analysis.
6.
CRJ 408 – Special Topics in Criminal Justice may be taken twice as long as the class covers a different topic. You may not
take CRJ 408 more than 3 times.
7.
Certain Intellectual Foundation requirements may be met by CRJ classes:

Writing Across the Curriculum: CRJ 303W Criminal Justice Theory and Ideology
CRJ 315W Research Methods in Criminal Justice

Diversity:
CRJ 425 Race and the Administration of Justice
CRJ 430 Gender and the Administration of Justice
8.
No class in the major (including the Professional, Behavioral and Social Science electives) may be taken Pass/Fail.
9.
Majors are assigned an advisor based on the first initial of your last name. Please see the department website for the name
and office hours of your advisor. All advisors are faculty within the department
