As the economy fluctuated during
2009, the stream of patients to the Dr.
Garabed A. Fattal Community Free
Clinic remained steady. There to meet the patients were our many volunteers who donated their time providing services week in and week out. The volunteers are the core of a coalition of staff members, community physicians and organizational partnerships that, working together, create a health care safety net for the Greater Binghamton area.
Focusing on the basics – providing primary health care and prescription medications – was the theme of 2009.
This meant the priority was treating as many patients as possible in the face of high demand for services.
Additionally, increasing the number of people who receive medications through the pharmaceutical companies was both a service to patients and a cost-saving measure for the Free
Clinic. More than 3,800 patient visits were logged during the 97 clinic sessions in 2009.

The Free
Clinic’s second mission of medical education was not forgotten.
Graduate and undergraduate medical students, nursing students, and pharmacy students took advantage of the opportunity to hone their skills and knowledge. In addition, Binghamton
University Scholars Program students and AmeriCorps members enhanced their resumes through service to the
Free Clinic.
The generous and sustained contributions of the many supporters of the Dr. Garabed A. Fattal Community
Free Clinic enabled the steady continuation of services through the turbulent economic times that stretched throughout 2009. Burdened by the high cost of both medical care and prescription medications and the uncertainty in the job market, the challenge of obtaining medical care is overwhelming for an increasing number

2009 Public Relations Award on behalf of the Dr. Garabed A. Fattal Community Free Clinic of people. Since 1998, community members without health insurance have known they have a place where they can receive much needed health care.
The impact of any health care reform proposals with regards to access to high quality, affordable medical care remains to be seen. Whatever health care legislation is enacted may not eliminate the entire uninsured population. Further health care reform could possibly take years to fully implement.
