Animal Project
There are over 1 million animals classified into the animal kingdom.
These organisms are further classified into 9 distinct phyla: porifera,
cnidaria, nematoda, platyhelminthes, annelida, mollusca,
arthropoda, echinodermata, and chordata. For this project you will
create your own portfolio of the characteristics of each of these phyla.
Materials needed:
 3 ring binder, divided into 10 sections
 Textbook
 Internet
 Source for pictures (magazines, books, internet)
Outline:
1. Cover-Page
 Title for your portfolio
 Your name and date
2. Table of Contents
 Distinguish all sections of the portfolio
 Identify the page numbers within each section
3. Phyla Information (9 sections)
 Traits of the Phylum (listed in Appendix of book)
 Types of classes within each phylum (listed in Appendix)
o Traits of each class
o Examples of organisms within class
 Additional facts about the organisms within the phylum
(researched facts such as number of species within the phylum
or additional characteristics not listed in the book)
 Pictures of organisms within phylum (labeled with the scientific
name)
 Examples of organisms within Phylum (common name and
scientific name)
 Resources cited (do NOT cite Google as a source)
4. Scientific Article Summary
 Relevant article about some feature of the animal kingdom
(endangerment/extinction, diversity, captivity, protection,
research, behavior, etc.)
 Article should come from a reliable source (magazine,
newspaper, reputable organization)
 Summary of article should be at least one paragraph in length
 Article should be cited at the end of the summary
