A new generation of TopTherm chillers from Rittal
Refrigeration machines that fit perfectly
are now available
The requirement profiles for the use of recooling
systems (chillers) are varied. To respond even more
strongly to the needs of individual industrial sectors,
primarily for engineering and increased availability,
Rittal has developed a new generation of its
TopTherm chillers in the 8 to 40kW output categories. With optimised thermodynamics and extensive
option packages – for example with 24 DC control
voltage, water-cooled condenser or a water circuit
that is free of non-ferrous metals, customer requirements can now be met even more flexibly.
Herborn, 15 August 2013 – With the TopTherm Chiller,
Rittal is offering a standardised recooling solution based
on the TS 8 enclosure system. The series is made up of
a few modular units such as water and cooling modules,
as well as an electrical module with the controls. Yet it is
still flexible enough to allow the customary cooling output
ranges from 8 to 40 kW to be covered by seven output
sizes. In order to integrate the chillers in existing
switchgear too, the manufacturer is offering its new
chiller generation in industry standard 600-mm deep
enclosures instead of in the 800-mm form used before.
The developers at Rittal have succeeded in optimising
the thermodynamics by placing the condenser fan on the
enclosure roof instead of installing it in the interior of the
enclosure, as had been the case up to now. As a result,
heat can be dissipated to the outside while a heat load
on the electronic module inside the enclosure can be
prevented. Other standard features include the setting of
the temperature control via a fixed value or difference
value as well as a microcontroller control. The new

controller logic reduces the on/off switching cycles of the
main components such as compressor, condenser fan
and medium pump – and dramatically increases the
energy efficiency. To increase the security and availability of the system, a monitoring function has been
integrated to prevent icing on the plate heat exchanger,
as well as a contact protection screen at the air inlet.
CE conformity and a dual frequency version with
400V/50Hz and 460V/60 Hz are important prerequisites
for global use.
With extensive option packages, customer requirements
can now be met in an even more flexible way. For
example, a 24V DC control voltage meets the demands
of the automotive industry. The use of a water-cooled
condenser with a water flow rate regulator improves the
energy efficiency of the refrigeration system and avoids
the thermal load of the ambient air. If the temperature of
the coolant also has to be precisely controlled with
machine-tool systems, Rittal offers a hot gas bypass
control as an additional option package. A selection can
be made between pumps with 4 and 6 bar, flow monitor,
water level monitoring, non-ferrous piping, media bypass,
ambient temperature control, pre-mounted base and
standard RAL colours for the outside of the enclosure
and its parts. Other options include systems for ambient
temperatures to -5°C or -20°C with variable speed
condenser fans and electrical components in UL
versions.
