6th Grade Music Appreciation -Mrs. Smith

Welcome!

I would like to welcome students to 6th Grade Music Appreciation! You will have many opportunities to experience various styles of music, composers and their music from the different eras in music history, and playing keyboards and rhythmic instruments!~ Each student is graded in the following categories:

Classroom Assignments (15%),

Tests (20%)

Quizzes (15%)

Playing tests (25%)

Unit One: Instruments of the Orchestra

(3 weeks)

One week review of Instruments of the Orchestra ~including the family of Instruments: Brass,

Woodwinds, Strings, & Percussion. (including music listening samples featuring specific instruments) including power point presentation covering Instruments of the Orchestra.

One week ~ Computer Lab time~ work on power point of chosen instrumental composition.

One week ~ Power Point Presentation of WHO AM I? (using instrumental music or other music as background. )

Students will prepare a 'slide show' about their life using music that represents who they are to go along with the slide show. Pictures should have a 'theme' and students should put the music on the power point and have enough pictures to last throughout the entire composition. (criteria sheet available and online) This project will be worth 30% of final grade!

Unit Two: Basic Rudiments of Music (rhythm/melody/key) (ONE week )

Students will learn about RHYTHM and how to read MUSIC RHYTHMS ~Students will complete music theory worksheets(4-8 total) and students will get to perform instruments while reading notation and performing to accompaniment music. Students will receive a performance grade for how well they perform at the end of the unit.

Unit Three:

"Musical/Peter Pan

"(NR) (starring 'Cathy Rigby')

Musical read in class/Video & worksheet (TWO WEEKS)

Students will read through a staged MUSICAL (assigned parts will be given ) and will be responsible to read using the proper techniques of theatre. They will be graded as to how well they read they assigned parts in class. They will also learn one song from the staged musical and will be responsible to learn the song and cheorography for that song. They will be graded by how well they perform the song and dance during class. Students will then watch PETER PAN and answer the worksheet that will be given to them to fill out during the movie. (addresses: The necessary skills to perform live on

stage: Dance, Acting, Singing, plus actors must be at the top of their game physically and mentally. )

Unit Four:

Piano Lab~ Learn the basic skills of how to play the piano (3 weeks)Students will be using a piano methods booklet that has been adopted and approved by the Beavercreek

Board of Education in learning the basic skills of playing the piano in a piano lab setting.

Students will share an 88 key Roland F-120 weighted key piano with split key capability.

Students will work as a class and demonstrate the basic skills for playing the piano.

One week) ~ view the Disney film, "Perfect Harmony" (NR) a film about racial prejudice during the late 1950's and complete a video worksheet.
