Research Shows:

In a 1997 research study by Dr. Frances
Rauscher and Dr. Gordon Shaw published in
the February 1997 issue of Neurological
Research; the findings conclude, “Children who
received piano/keyboard training performed
34% higher on tests that require higher brain
functions such as mathematics, chess, science,
and engineering.”

Course Objectives



To learn the basics concepts of playing the
piano and piano music
To perform a wide range of repertoire from
various cultures and genres which are engaging
and challenging for the students
To analyze, describe, and evaluate musical
pieces through various music theory exercises
and activities

 Lined
Paper or Notebook
 Three-pronged folder OR Three-Ring Binder
 Headphones
 Piano Music and Worksheets
Grading Policy
Playing Tests: 40%
 Written Tests: 30%
 Theory Homework, Classwork, Quizzes: 20%
 Classroom Participation/Required Materials:
10%

Students will be graded on five categories:

Course Requirements and
Expectations


Students must bring all required materials to
class. Bringing the required materials to class
is a daily portion of your classroom
participation grade.
Be on Time to class. Students should be in
their seats 1 minute after the bell rings.
Expectations Continued



No Food, Gum, Candy, or Drinks in the
classroom
Homework must be turned in on the
assigned day. No late work will be accepted,
unless students are absent or prior
arrangements have been made.
Playing Test will be given once a week in class.
