Mature flowers
5 X 7 index cards
Tape
Scalpels
Q-tips
Tomato plants that are ready to be pollinated
Procedure
1.
Give each student a copy of the “Our Flowering World Flower Structure” worksheet.
Have them determine the answers. Go over the answers as a class, and add any pertinent
information that you feel the students need.
2.
Give each pair of students a flower to dissect.
3.
Have each pair of students carefully cut the flower open. They should tape it open and to
the index card. The parts of the flower should then be labeled. If the parts need to be
removed from the flower for easier labeling, have them tape them separately to the card.
4.
Explain how to pollinate the hydroponic tomato plants with Q-tips. Have each pair of
students pollinate a select number of plants.
5.
Give each student a copy of the “Our Flowering World Crossword” worksheet. Students
should fill it out and use it to study the functions of the flower parts.
