SPECIAL TOPICS IN ASIAN AMERICAN LITERATURE

This course surveys the authors, intellectual currents, and cultural politics of Filipino
culture from the 1880s to World War II. Topics include the legacy of Spanish
colonialism, European enlightenment, the role of the Philippines in the imagination and
projection of American exceptionalism, and the emergence of nationalism and socialism,
and Filipino literature in English.
REQUIREMENTS:
Attendance (10%) (2 absences or less = A; 3 absences = B; 4 absences = C; 5 absences =
D; 6 absences = F); Participation (15%); oral presentation (10%); 2 short responses (3
pages each) (10% each = 20%); 1 medium-length paper (7 pages) (20%); final exam
(25%)
