Interactive Whiteboards: Helping teachers engage students
inside the classroom
Anna Lian Vivas
Today’s teenagers and children are very much
engrossed in technology and gadgets, thus the
label digital babies. With the use of technology,
teachers can easily get the students involved in
the classroom. It is not a great wonder, then, why
technological advancements such as interactive
whiteboards are becoming prevalent in schools,
especially in the United States and United Kingdom.
An interactive whiteboard or IWB is a large
interactive display wherein users can control the
computer with the use of a digital pen or even just
fingers. This new technological innovation can be
used in the classroom as a replacement for the
traditional blackboard and whiteboard because it
actually functions like these old-fashioned
instructional materials—only better. A student can
write directly on the board, mark objects, highlight
important elements on the screen, and erase
errors. What makes it so great? At the end of the
lesson, the teacher can save and print the computer
screen images complete with all the notes,
highlights, and marks done by the class!
Through the IWB, teachers and students can
experience 3D presentations, animations, and
other interactive resources. Ideas and concepts
that are otherwise hard for teachers to explain
and students to grasp are made more appealing
and interesting, leading to ease of instruction on
the part of the teacher and clearer understanding
for the students. Such a creative mode of
presenting lessons raises the level of students’
engagement in the classroom, motivates them,
and promotes enthusiasm in learning.
