Wright County Job Description Heavy Equipment Operator JOB TITLE: DEPARTMENT: REPORTS TO: FLSA STATUS: Heavy Equipment Operator Approved by: ______________ Secondary Roads Department County Engineer Bridge and Sign Crew Foreman Non-exempt FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Sign truck driver/sign maintenance person GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision, fabricates, installs and maintains traffic control signs and corresponding records, operates a sign maintenance truck, and assists with repair of county bridges. Operates snow plow truck out of Clarion Truck shed or as assigned route during snow removal activities. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: Assignments may vary from position to position. However, the incumbent can be expected to perform a variety of the following: Installs new signs and posts, repairs existing signs, maintains a computerized sign inventory, maintains an inventory of sign materials on hand and informs supervisor of materials needed for ongoing maintenance. Designs layouts for and fabricates special signs as needed. Responsible for making advance one-calls for buried utility locates. Performs routine maintenance on bridges, such as; removing and installing bridge plank and repairing guardrail. Operates heavy equipment such as Dozer, Backhoe Loader, and/or Excavator in a variety of road maintenance, repair, and construction duties. Operates medium and light equipment such as single and tandem axle dump truck, front-end loader, and light industrial tractor, in a variety of road maintenance, repair, and construction duties. Operates truck with snow blade, wing, and sander; manipulates controls, lowers/raises blade and spreads materials to remove snow and ice from road surfaces; mounts and dismounts plow and blades. Performs required manual labor tasks involved in road, bridge, tile and culvert maintenance, repair and construction projects, as a crew member, such as: dig post Wright County Job Description Heavy Equipment Operator holes, put-up and take-down barricades, patch pavements, paint and repair barricades, shovels snow from sidewalks on departmental property, and performs janitorial service in departmental buildings. Operates a variety of manually operated auxiliary equipment such as air hammer and tamper, in conjunction with heavier equipment on various maintenance, repair and construction projects. Holds slow/stop sign and directs traffic around road maintenance, repair, or construction site. Operates power equipment and uses hand tools to cut trees and brush and clean-out culverts, treats stumps after brush cutting. Prepares loaders and loads truck with material such as gravel, broken concrete or asphalt paving material, dirt, snow, drives truck and hauls load to predetermined site, manipulates controls and dumps load. Performs a variety of routine maintenance work such as oil change, grease job, and change blades. May also perform minor repairs. Maintains report on work projects such as what was done and hours equipment involved. INCIDENTAL DUTIES: May operate medium to heavy equipment on a back up or training basis as assigned. May function as checker and ticket collector for loads of construction materials to determine quantities used in road maintenance, repair, and construction. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: May possess a valid Type-A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes. Familiarization with Windows based software would be beneficial. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Manual dexterity is required. Sits, stands, walks, turns, and bends. Moderate to heavy (50 to 100 lbs.) lifting required when performing manual labor described above, under essential duties. Frequent sitting and operating equipment and trucks in various types of situations, also described under essential duties.
