Petruzzi and D. Chhajed, 2005, “An Integrated Product Returns Model with Logistics and Marketing Coordination” European Journal of Operational Research, 161(1), 16 February 2005, 162-182. Abstract: We develop an integrated approach for analyzing logistics and marketing decisions within the context of designing an optimal returns system for a retailer servicing two distinct market segments. At the operational level, we show that the optimal refund price is not unique. We also show that any improvement to the returns system that results in increased logistical efficiency or marketing effectiveness will be accompanied by an increase in the selling price of the product. At the strategic level, we show that if the retailer does not coordinate its logistics and marketing efforts to improve the overall returns system, then it will tend to over-invest in one of the functions and under-invest in the other. Work-in-Progress Yalabik, B., D. Chhajed and N.C. Petruzzi, “Key Drivers of Remanufacturing Economics” Abstract: We address three research questions: First, what cost and market conditions induce a firm to adopt remanufacturing? Second, given that is profitable, how friendly is remanufacturing towards the environment? Third, how does the adoption of remanufacturing influence the customers in the market? We answer these questions through solving for the optimal product selection and sales contract decisions of a firm operating in new and remanufactured goods markets. We find that products that gradually provide value to customers are better candidates for remanufacturing. Also, the firm’s most profitable option is seldom the greenest option, while customer surplus usually agrees with profitability. Finally, we find that the optimal flexibility provided by the sales contract to customers depends on which market - new or remanufactured goods – has larger margins and smaller price elasticity.
