Assignment 2: Design Specification for As-U-Go Hotel
Aims

to gain an understanding of the process of design by creating prototype
screen designs

to produce part of a systems design specification or user documentation to
describe the function and use of your screen prototypes

demonstrate an ability to produce screen designs and dialogues of a
reasonable quality
Outline of the Task
This part of the assignment requires that you play the role of a systems design
consultant who has been contracted to design a set of screen prototypes and
specifications for a new system at As-U-Go Hotel. Having already analysed the
situation, you are now in the position to prepare some initial screen designs and
documentation to support these screens.
You should ensure that the screen prototypes you design address the problems of the
current situation, and where possible the new business needs of the client. It should
also take advantage of any opportunities identified by your analysis. Your screens
should also incorporate the principles of good design as discussed in lectures. Your
screen designs do not have to be working prototypes - they can be mock-ups.
Use the description of the case study provided, as well as any relevant information
provided by the lecturer or your tutor, to produce a set of screen designs and a wordprocessed report that describes the use and function of these screens. This report
should be in the form of a User Manual.
Clearly note in your report any assumptions you have made about the way a function
is performed or the way a screen works where these functions are not fully described
in the case study.
Assignment Deliverables
Your report should be in the form of an excerpt from a User Manual. Your report does
not need a letter of transmittal or an Executive Summary because it is only an excerpt,
however you should still include a Table of Contents.
Your report should also include

Introduction that clearly states the aim of the User Manual excerpts, and its place
in the final design documentation which will be presented to the client. The User
Manual excerpts must include the following screen mockups:
• An access or password screen
• A menu screen and submenus if appropriate
• A screen or set of screens to make guest reservations, register guests, arrange
safe deposits and check out guests.
• A screen to modify reservation details




The User Manual excerpts must include any error messages or other dialogue
screens you consider necessary or appropriate
The mockup screens must include navigation controls.
Note: The screens, and the functionality they represent, are the primary focus in
this exercise. Examiners will be more concerned with the appearance of the
screens and description of functionality, than with the working screens
themselves..
The User Manual excerpts must include descriptions of the functionality and use
of each screen.
Remember to spell-check, proofread and check the layout of your reports for a more
professional result, and greater overall impact and readability.
Submissions
Students are required to work individually and each student is expected to submit a
report containing the screen grabs of your design and a description of its function.
Due date
The assignment is to be submitted to your tutor by the end of Week 13.
Assignment Value
The assignment is worth 20% of the total marks available for the unit.
SIMS Individual Assignment Cover Sheets
All work must be submitted with a signed SIMS Individual Assignment Cover Sheet
at the front of the report. This Cover Sheet is available on the SIMS website or can be
obtained from your tutor.
Any work submitted without a signed SIMS Individual Assignment Cover Sheet will
not be accepted nor marked by your tutor.
Plagiarism and Cheating
Plagiarism or cheating of any kind will not be tolerated.
While collaboration is encouraged it is essential that it is acknowledged at the
beginning of your report. If there is any evidence that groups may have shared work,
and this sharing is not acknowledged it will be regarded as cheating and all parties
involved will be penalised.
The SIMS policy on plagiarism and cheating is contained on the SIMS Individual
Assignment Cover Sheet. Ensure that you have read and understand this policy before
you sign it.
Standards
All work must conform to the written presentation standards as described in the SIMS
Style Guide. This guide is available on the SIMS website at

standards set out in the assignment. Refer also to the School of
Information Management and Systems guidelines for writing assignments
for additional information on presentation standards:
http://www.sims.monash.edu.au/resources/style.html
2.2

accepted (up to one week late) at the discretion of your lecturer, but may
be penalised at the rate of 10% of total assignment marks per day
(including weekends). Example:
Total marks available for the assignment = 100 marks
Marks received for the assignment = 70 marks
Marks deducted for 2 days late submission (20% of 100) = 20 marks
Final mark received for assignment = 50 marks
2.4
Submission of assignments
Assignments should be submitted to your tutor in their pigeonhole on the
4th floor of S block on or before the due date. In the absence of other

Student Academic Grievance Procedure
If you have a concern or issue about aspects of your assessment or other
academic matters, you are encouraged to follow the SIMS Student Academic

4.
Pass requirements
The 40% rule applies to units and determines the final result for a student
where the student's performance in either the examination or assignment
component of the unit is unsatisfactory. Students need to be aware of the 40%
rule which is:
In order to pass a unit, a student must gain all of the following:

at least 40% of the marks available for the examination component, if any:
i.e. the final examination and any tests performed under exam conditions,
taken as a whole

at least 40% of the marks available for the assignment component: i.e. the
assignments and any other assessment tasks (such as presentations)
taken as a whole

at least 50% of the total marks for the unit
Where a student gains less than 40% for either the examination or
assignment component, the final result for the unit will be no greater than
‘44-N’.
