School of Information Management and Systems
IMS1002/CSE1205 Systems Analysis and Design
Semester 2, 2005
Assignment 1: Requirements Specification for As-U-Go Hotel
Aims

to gain an understanding of the process of analysis by determining and
modelling the data requirements for a new system

to produce part of a systems requirement definition of a case study
focussing on the data requirements of a new system

to demonstrate an ability to produce detailed data models of a reasonable
quality
Outline of the Task
The assignment requires that you play the role of a systems analyst consultant who
has been contracted to analyse and report on the situation at As-U-Go Hotel. You are
required to analyse the current situation in order to identify and report on the
problems and opportunities that exist. You should then suggest a proposed system that
meets the new data requirements. You will document your findings as part of a
systems requirements specification.
You should ensure that the development of a new logical solution addresses the
problems of the current situation, as well as the new business needs of the client. It
should also take advantage of any opportunities identified by your analysis.
Use the description of the case study provided, as well as any relevant information
provided by the lecturer or your tutor, to produce a word-processed report that
includes all the required items as listed in the Assignment Deliverables.
Clearly note in your report any assumptions you need to make about any processing
or data that may not be fully described in the case study.
Submissions
Students are required to work individually.
Due date
The assignment is to be submitted to your tutor by the end of Week 8.
Assignment Value
The assignment is worth 20% of the total marks available for the unit.

not be accepted nor marked by your tutor.
Plagiarism and Cheating
Plagiarism or cheating of any kind will not be tolerated.

and this sharing is not acknowledged it will be regarded as cheating and all parties
involved will be penalised. In severe cases, disciplinary action may be taken.

component of the unit is unsatisfactory. Students need to be aware of the 40%
rule which is:
In order to pass a unit, a student must gain all of the following:

at least 40% of the marks available for the examination component, if any:
i.e. the final examination and any tests performed under exam conditions,
taken as a whole

at least 40% of the marks available for the assignment component: i.e. the
assignments and any other assessment tasks (such as presentations)
taken as a whole

at least 50% of the total marks for the unit
Where a student gains less than 40% for either the examination or
assignment component, the final result for the unit will be no greater than
‘44-N’.
