Scottish Amateur Football League
MATCH INCIDENT REPORT (ABANDONED GAME)
Match: SAFL TEAM ONE AFC - v - SAFL TEAM TWO AFC
Venue: GLASGOW GREEN
Time Match Abandoned: 68th min.
Date of Match: 29th August 2015
Competition: PREMIER DIV 1
Club: Both Named Clubs
In the 68th minute I abandoned the above game due to threatening behaviour by players, mainly from SAFL Team
ONE AFC.
The game had been a difficult game to referee due to petty fouls, players squaring up to each other over trivial
matters and my decisions being constantly disputed. Being a local derby I had expected a difficult game and tried
to referee the game in the main with by talking to players and not the use of cards. I had cautioned two players in
the game, both from SAFL Team ONE AFC. and both for persistent misconduct.
In the 68th minute a ball was played high onto the halfway line and was contested by players of both sides. One of
the SAFL TEAM TWO AFC players landed awkwardly on the ground with an injured shoulder. Players of both
teams were trying to kick the ball, which was on the ground very close to the injured player. I immediately stopped
the game as the situation looked as if it might end up getting out of control with a scenario more familiar to a rugby
game than soccer.
Instead of the whistle being the signal for the players to cool down and back off while the SAFL TEAM TWO
AFC player received attention it seemed to have the opposite effect. Players of both teams began threatening each
other and the situation became extremely ugly. I had to physically pull players apart to save blows being struck.
The main offenders in my opinion were from the home club. As far as I could see the SAFL TEAM TWO AFC
players involved were protecting themselves or their teammates.
I called both managers over and expressed my concern at the situation and the way the game was going. They
were told that another disturbance would result in the game being abandoned. I let the players in the immediate
vicinity know this as well. I had barely got the words out of my mouth when over to my left another melee began
with a SAFL TEAM ONE AFC player the main instigator.
At this point I decided enough was enough and signalled game abandoned and walked in the direction of the
changing rooms. I was approached by a member of the SAFL TEAM ONE AFC’s committee who was
attempting to get me to change my mind. I told him this would not happen. He then turned nasty and shouted to
me “can you not handle a big boy’s game?” and a couple of other unsavoury remarks. I then went into the
changing room and began to pack my kit away. The door was knocked and a gentleman introduced himself as ‘an
independent observer’ and told me he would be reporting me to the S.A.F.L for the way I had handled the affair. I
told him I would provide him with the league secretary’s name and address to which he replied that he knew it was
Sandy Buchan so I can only assume he was independently with one of the clubs.
When I left the changing rooms I was approached by the SAFL TEAM ONE AFC’s official who had given me
their team lines prior to the game and he made comments about the conduct of the numbers 5 & 8 of SAFL
TEAM TWO AFC. I told him that I had not noticed anything untoward with these players but he possibly saw
something off the ball that I didn’t. I asked him about the match fee, as he did not offer it to me before the game
to which he replied “that is nothing to do with me”. I told him that I would include the unpaid fee in my match
report.
In conclusion I feel that had I not abandoned the game when I did, taking into account the conduct and attitude of some o
players, then I would have being delaying the inevitable as I am in no doubt my message did not get across and the game
would have been terminated sooner rather than later. The last thing I wanted was for a serious injury or incident to occur
before this happened.
Both Club officials in charge” were informed that the matter would be reported to the
appropriate association.
