How to use RSTS/E INFO Page 2 23Mar-82 HOW TO USE RSTS/E INFO INFO is a program for reading on-line documentation. It's chief value lies in it's "Tree Structure" which allows the user to quickly obtain information at various levels of detail. Below is a diagram of how the information is organized in INFO. Keep in mind that each of the small boxes is called a "node". _________ |DIR | The DIRECTORY node |* | "D" shows you this node. |* | |* | |_______| ________/ / \________ / / \ ___|___ ___/_______ _____|___ | | |editors | | lang- | TOPIC nodes: | | | | | uages | Topic nodes give info | | | | |_____| | | |* | | | |* | |_________| |_______| ______/ / \ ____/_ ____/__ _\____ | B | | | | | | A P | |MACRO | |PAS- | | S L | |11 | |CAL | | I U | | | | | | C S | | | | | +-----+ +------+ +-----+ on major topics. SUBTOPIC nodes: These give more specific detail There are several types of INFO commands. The two most commonly used commands are "M" and "U". If you notice in the picture, DIR is at the very top of the INFO tree. when you run INFO, you will see something called a menu. Page two shows the Menu belonging to the DIR node. To obtain information on, or "select", any item in the menu, just press the "M" key on the keyboard. Info will print the words "Menu Item:", which is its way of asking for you to type in the name of one of the menu items. Once you have typed it in, INFO will show you that subject. To go back up the tree to the menu again, type the letter "U", which is the "UP command. How to use RSTS/E INFO Page 3 23Mar-82 Some topics (or "nodes") are too big to fit on the screen. If the number in the lower right corner of the screen is not "100", then there is more to be seen than is on the screen. To show the next screenful, just type a space. To reread the last screenful, type a backspace. To quit INFO, just type a "Q". INFO will ask really want to quit and you can answer Yes or No. if you /\ < > \/ Below is a copy of the menu in the DIR (directory) node. How to use RSTS/E INFO Page 6 User Feedback Mar-82 23- USER FEEDBACK INFO is being made available on a test basis. Comments are desired, and in fact encouraged. If you have any problems using the program, find any bugs, or want to make any suggestions for improvements or changes, you can use the BUG program, which automatically updates a comment file which is read regularly. Feel free to create your own INFO nodes. Instructions for doing this are contained within INFO. (Look in the node called "INFO".) If you create documentation that you think might be of general interest to other users, you can use the BUG program to tell me where it is, and it might find it's way into the public INFO tree. TO RUN THE BUG PROGRAM, do: MUN [44,12] BUG INFO<cr> then type your message. Finish with control-Z (that is hold down the key marked "Control" and press Z simultaneously. To read other messages, use the REPLY program, as follows: RUN [44,22]REPLY
