Math 2311 Online This document IS the Syllabus and Orientation. To remain registered in this course students are required to purchase a Math 2311 Access Code from the UH Bookstore!! This course uses Blackboard VISTA. Pay close attention to the Discussion Board on the Math 2311 Home Page each time you log on. Text:Basic Statistics, an Inferential Approach, Third Edition. A hardcopy of the textbook is available in the UH Bookstore for approximately $75. Access Code also allows students to access an electronic copy of the textbook. Exams Count: 30%* Weekly Quizzes on- line using Blackboard Vista, 35%* Mid-Semester and 35%* Final Exam *See Math 2311 Homepage for scheduling Mid-Semester and Final Exams. These Exams MUST be taken on-campus in the CASA Testing Center Room 222 Garrison. For all grading, see 1)- 7) below and Grade Computation formula at the end of this document. 1) You must have a working Blackboard Vista Password and valid “Cougar Card” ID in order to take both CASA Exams. 2) Your Quiz 1-6 Average must be > 70% to remain in the course. If it is not, it is YOUR responsibility to drop and you will automatically receive a grade of “W”. Failure to drop will result in a course grade of “F”. The Instructor WILL NOT automatically drop you. 3) Highest of Quiz scores will be retained automatically. 4) Exam questions will be similar to Homework, Quizzes and the worked Examples in the Textbook, the Practice Exams and Course Notes. 5) There will be no Quiz make-ups . 6) There will be no Mid-Semester Exam make-ups. 7) There will be no Final Exam make-ups. Disabled : CSD students should bring their CSD Accommodation Form to the Instructor during the first week of class. Homework: Homework is not graded; however, you are expected to do it on your own or with a study buddy. Also see “Assistance” below. Dropping: See “Dropping Procedure” folder on the Math 2311 Home Page. Assistance: On-Line assistance is available on Math 2311 Homepage Discussion Board where the Instructor and/or the Teaching Assistant will be spending time during the week answering your questions and making suggestions. One-on-one tutoring is available daily on a walk-in basis in MathLab in 222 Garrison (schedule posted in Room 222 Garrison). See the Teaching Assistant’s Mathlab Schedule on the Math 2311 Homepage. Communication: Most communication will be through the Discussion Board and Mathlab (not by email!). However, if you feel that your concerns are personal are not being properly addressed, you may email the Instructor directly. For personal matters, grades, etc.; do not use the Discussion Board. Calculator: You will need a calculator (no cell phones, blackberries, Ipods etc.!!) that has, at a minimum, exponentiation and square root keys. Graphing calculators provide no particular benefit in this course. You must bring your calculator to the CASA Mid-Semester and Final Exams. Changes: The Instructor reserves the right to make changes to this document and/or course format. Practice Exams: There will be Practice Mid-Semester and the Final Exams. See their contribution in Grade Computation below. You may take each Practice Exam as often as you like during the availability period. Highest scores will be retained automatically. Incomplete: A grade of “Incomplete” is not available unless you have a 70% average or better on the Mid-Semester Exam and a documented emergency during the last week of class (see Student Handbook for more detail).
