February 13, 2009 - LAMB, Terance (Terry) Malcolm
Terry was born in Brandon, Manitoba to Charles and Isabel Lamb and grew
upon the family farm south of Bradwardine, Manitoba. He started his
education in Bradwardine then, with rural school consolidation, completed
High School at Rivers, MB. He is remembered by the neighbours for his
many excursions around the family farm in a 1929 Chevrolet with his dog
Mickey by his side.
Terry was introduced to the world of aviation when, at 12 years old, he
joining #320 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets at Rivers. Terry
excelled in the Cadet programs, attended summer camp at St. Jean, Quebec
in 1959 then a flying scholarship (Private Pilot License) at Gimli, Manitoba
in the summer of 1964 where he received an award as the top course Cadet.
After graduating from High School in 1965, Terry commenced work with
Maple Leaf Aviation at Brandon. While with Maple Leaf, Terry obtained his
Aircraft Maintenance License and Commercial Pilot's License. In 1967,
seeking to build up his hours and see more of Canada, Terry loaded up his
tent and camping gear and flew "Pinkie", a Luscombe 8A, from Brandon to
Toronto Island Airport and back to attend Expo '67 in Montreal.
Looking to expand his career opportunities, Terry obtained his MultiEngine/IFR license with Perimeter Aviation in Winnipeg then moved to
Alberta in 1972. After working in general aviation in Calgary, including
flying cloud seeding flights out of the Red Deer Airport, Terry was hired by
Pacific Western Airlines in November 1973 as a Second Officer on B727
Aircraft. From November, 1973 until his retirement, Terry transferred
between Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver bases while being a
part of several airline mergers. His career took him from the High Arctic to
Western Africa (Angola), to Europe, Middle East and Asia, North America
and the Caribbean on the L-382 (Hercules), B727, B737, DC-10 and A320
aircraft before retiring in April 2002 as an Vancouver based Air Canada
Captain on the B767-300. One of Terry's prouder moments was having his
mother and father meet him at the Brandon Airport in June, 1988 when he
flew as Captain on the B737 Toronto-Brandon-Toronto route.
A love of the outdoors was a major part of Terry's life - outdoors with his
friends was where he was the happiest and at ease; hiking the West Coast
Trail on Vancouver Island, living, skiing, hiking and dirt bike riding at
Whistler and post retirement, dividing his time between White Rock and
Osoyoos in B.C.'s Okanagan Valley.
After a courageous and stoic battle against cancer, Terry passed away
peacefully on February 13th, 2010 in White Rock with his family by his side.
He is survived by his mother Isabel, sister Noreen, brother Russ, sister-inlaw Heather Stewart, nieces Shawna, Carla and Kadence, nephews Shane,
Charles and Dario and his many cousins from both the Lamb and Prowse
families.
Before he left us, he asked that the following thought be kept in our minds:
"Don't cry because I am gone, but smile for all the fun times we had
together."
If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 565 10th Avenue West, Vancouver, B.C., V5Z 1L3, as an expression of sympathy
and remembrance of Terence. A Celebration of Life will be held on April
10th from 1300 to 1600 at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club, 18150 - 8th
Avenue, Surrey. Pictures and stories to share will be appreciated.

Even as a young boy, Wil wanted to fly. At 17 he left home and worked as

required 30 operations before being shot down. Although he was the only

circumstances, including world wars and civil wars, inclement weather
and adverse conditions, humanitarian and medical needs. He was well
read and insightful and always had interesting stories to tell. Wil and
Donnie built a home in Namao, Sturgeon County, AB in 1972. They both
loved the warm, welcoming community and the beautiful Sturgeon River
valley. Wil was fond of saying that the next time he moved it would be
with three men on either side of the box. Wil was able to remain at home

June 30, 2008 Jack Cooke
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of a true aviation Pioneer
and an AC Pionair member, Jack Cooke, who was very well known in the
aviation community and in fact could have been considered to be one of the
"icons". Jack Cooke passed away in Peace Arch Hospital on June 28, 2008.
Jack was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, in 2002.
Jack will be dearly missed by his loving children - Penny (Tony) Dalton,
Randy (Alix) Cooke, and their children Melinda (Neil), Dana (Wes), Jaimie
(Chris), and Joanna (Graham); stepson Steve (Jennifer), their sons Adam and
Matthew, and his favourite cousin, Patti Cooke.
Jack was born on September 18, 1922, in Edson, Alberta. He joined TCA
(later Air Canada) in 1945 in Lethbridge, Alberta, and subsequently worked
for TCA in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. In 1956, Russ Baker, founder
of Pacific Western Airlines, asked Jack to join his new company in
Vancouver. Throughout his career, he served in many senior management
positions and retired in 1987. Jack was defined by his outgoing personality
and his high regard for his colleagues throughout his 42 years in the
aviation industry.
Jack's passion was golf and he enjoyed many years as a member of Point
Grey Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, and Willow Park Golf and
Country Club in Calgary. He served as The Worshipful
Master of Grandview Masonic Lodge in 1961 and was a
proud member of the Shriners' Oriental Band, where he
excelled at playing the tambourine.
June 5, 2008 BOND, Tom
With humour and wit, dad had us laughing until his passing June 5, 2008. At
79, with a full life contributing to his family, friends and community, a long
determined battle with cancer ended. Tom is survived by his devoted wife
Dorothy of 50 years, loving daughters Rosemary (Tony) and Debra, grandsons
Stuart and Douglas. Dad started with PWA in 1959 and worked in North
Battleford, Saskatoon, Powell River, Dawson Creek and Vancouver where he
worked in Claims until 1982. He enjoyed the reunions with the old PWA gang
and participated in the 25 year club.
June 5, 2008 - Don Johnson, Finance
I wish that I was writing with good news but sadly this will be the hardest
update to write. My dad Donald Johnson passed away this morning at home
just before 11am after a 7 year battle with colon cancer. Erik, Scotia and I
were at his side to hold his hand. He did not suffer. The nurses say that he
was aware of our presence and this was evident by the way he stopped (his
trademark) snoring when Scotia squealed at him :) earlier in the morning.
We are taking comfort in knowing that he put up a good fight and is now at
peace. My family wishes to thank everyone again for their kind words and
prayers during this difficult time. My dad was blessed to have had so many
dear people in his life and he spoke highly of all of you.

THOMAS JOSEPH SMITH On Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at the Deer Lodge Centre, with his
family at his side, Tom's long struggle came to an end at the age of 83 years. Remaining to
forever cherish Tom's memory are his loving wife Roxie, of 56 years of marriage and son
Brian. He was predeceased by his beloved children Dan and Maureen; brother Glenn and
sister Dorothy. Tom was born on March 22, 1924, and raised in Brandon, Manitoba. In 1943

C.P.R. until moving to Winnipeg in 1963. He then trained in avionics and worked at Transair
and Pacific Western until retirement in 1985. Tom had a great love of motorcycles from 1944
in Belgium until his last ride at the age of 75 years. This love was passed on to his boys. He
was a great neighbourhood helper too, but his first love was always home and family. He will
be missed. In compliance with Tom's wishes no formal funeral service will be held. A private
family service has taken place. He will be laid to rest later in Brandon beside Dan and
Maureen. Our thanks and gratitude goes to all the staff on Tower 4 for their gentle care of
Tom and support for us for the past two and a half years. In lieu of flowers donations in
Tom's memory can be made to Deer Lodge Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB
R3J 0L3, or the Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7.
I was that which others did not want to be, I went where others feared to go, And did what
others failed to do. I have seen the face of terror, Felt the stinging cold of fear, And enjoyed
the sweet taste of a moment's love. But most of all, I have lived times others would say were
lest forgotten. At least someday, I will be able to say that I was proud of what I wasa soldier.

Duncan D. McLaren July 16, 1917 – April 13, 2006
Career at PWA 1953-1961 One of the Founders In April 1953 Duncan joined Central British
Columbia Airways to work with Russ Baker. He had previously had past experiences as an
aircraft mechanic, bush pilot, test pilot, HBC pilot and came to Central British Columbia Airways (
soon to be renamed Pacific Western Airlines) from Queen Charlotte Airlines where he had been
employed as Executive Assistant to the General Manager. During his time with PWA he held
various senior management positions and was directly involved in development of the company
during a time of growth in the airline industry in Canada. After Russ Baker's passing he was
acting President and ended his time with PWA as Managing Director. After leaving PWA he
subsequently moved to the US to work for an International Aircraft Maintenance and Leasing
Company. Three years later found himself selling and leasing aircraft to PWA and working with
new and old PWA staff. In November 1992 he authored "Bush to Boardroom" which was his
personal view of Five Decades of Aviation History in which PWA played a prominent role.
