Dear Members
We are very fortunate to be able to participate in club trials on a regular
basis which goes a long way to building a really great team spirit within
the club.
EDITOR
One area however that we really need to support is the marshals who give up their time to
marshal on the courses. Please will you consider giving a little of your day at the trials to stand in
for one of the marshals to enable them to have a ‘comfort break’, refreshment, lunch and an
opportunity to sit under “the big tree”. If you would give up an hour of your time to contribute
towards the overall success and enjoyment of the day, I know it will be greatly appreciated.

LROC BOUGHT DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
With modern cars becoming more and more electronically controlled with 1 or more computers doing all sorts of stuff, our
beloved Land Rovers are no more different. Even the modest Defender PUMA has more that one computer under its skin. This
situation and after 1 of the members, Darryl Beck, mentioned at the AGM that the club must give back to the club and not
accumulate too much money, the Comm decided to buy a diagnostic tool.
Now members have access to a diagnostic tool to read and clear error codes on their Landies. The tool will be under my
control, and it will be taken to club events. Just check with me beforehand if I will be attending that specific event. In an urgent
situation, special arrangements can be made with me to arrange checking a vehicle after hours and over weekends.
This tool is open for all Landies with a diagnostic port. The only 2 Landies that cannot be checked is the Disco 1 V8 with
14CUX management, and the Defender fitted with the 2.8i BMW engine.
Please note that NO programming will be done on members Landies, as such actions are best left to skilled and experienced
technicians. The diagnostic service will be limited to reading and clearing or error codes, performing of output tests and
checking of life data.

ARTICLES FOR THE MAGAZINE
We really need your help. It’s almost time to publish the Winter 2014 edition of the magazine and except for but one article we
have nothing else to include. We already missed out on the Autumn 2014 edition and there are only two left for this year, it will
be a shame if we can’t get your input to produce the next two magazines.
Sitting around the camp fires, one hear a lot of interesting stories, surely you can put pen to paper and share yours with all of
us. Please forward your stories, photos of events or anything of interest to the editors for consideration. Your input to make it
happen will really be appreciated.

TENDERS REQUESTED FOR THE 2015 CALENDAR
At our meeting held on 21 May 2014, the Executive Committee, decided to once again give our club members the opportunity
to produce the club’s calendar for 2014. However, rather than following the processes of recent years, the Executive
Committee has taken the decision to put the production of the 2014 calendar out to tender.
Any club member interested in producing the club’s calendar for 2015 is hereby requested to submit their tender and the
following conditions will apply:
1) The 2015 calendar will have to be the same as that of 2014 in respect of its size, thickness of paper, font, etc.;
2) The cost to produce the calendar must include the art work, all materials required and the printing costs for its
production;
3) Please base your costs on producing 1200 calendars – 600 calendars are to be printed on 230gsm and 600 on
300gsm paper. The Executive Committee reserves the right to alter the numbers to be printed in accordance with
the membership totals in the later half of the year, but will similarly accept changes to the costs originally
tendered in line with these amendments;
4) Only written tenders will be considered and must be submitted to the club’s Administrator on or before 17 June 2014
by 18:00;
5) No tenders, received later than the date and time stipulated, will be considered; and
6) The Executive Committee's decision will be final and no correspondence on the matter will be entered into on the
matter.
All written tenders will be considered at the meeting on 18 June 2014 and the successful tender will be notified by 20 June
2014. Those tenders that are unsuccessful will also be notified by this date. The successful tender will be required to:

LANDY FESTIVAL 2014
We attended the 1st one in 2012, only on the Sunday. Last year we were at Rheebokvlei and this year, we stayed at
Soetdoring for the entire event. The LROC was requested to run the 4x4 track during the festival on the Saturday and Sunday,
by Craig Dutton. It was already very close to the event when we, for the first time, met with Craig to discuss the LROC’s
involvement and we also paid Soetdoring a visit to determine what needs to be done and how we are going to do it. We arrived
midday on the Friday at the venue and put up camp in the “bush camp” – still plenty of space left and we had the opportunity to
choose where we want to be. Soon it was clear that the camp would be full. Friday evening, with some of our team present,
was spending around the braai and we shared our Landy stories. Around us Landy owners were arriving and here and there
music was playing for all to hear – not what we are used to in a campsite but nevertheless a pleasant evening. We managed to
LROC News – June 2014
Page 3
demarcate some camping space for those
of us which would only arrive the next
morning. The organizers showed the film
“The God’s must be crazy”, but we kept to
our braai.
Early on Saturday morning the remainder of
our team arrived and we set up by the track
to do duty. Some of us at the start and
others within the track to help with recovery
where needed. At first it was a slow start but
as the day progressed, the 4x4 driving
became popular and especially at the last
“waterhole” almost all the vehicles needed
assistance to get out. All went well although
some expensive plastic body parts where
left behind in the mud. In general the drivers
listened to advise given, but there are
always those who know better and they
have certainly paid some school fees! The
track was closed by 16:30 in the afternoon and some of us had the opportunity to pay the arena a visit, where all about Land
Rover was on show where you could buy specialized equipment, spares, clothing, food, beverages and camping gear.
Saturday evening we all gathered around the braai again and spent a nice evening together.
Early on Sunday we set up again to manage the track but there were no customers. All were going on around the arena and of
course entering for the convoy driving for the Guinness Book’s record attempt. The attempt started just after 12:00 and we
were requested to drive through the game reserve in low range 1st gear. This went well and for the most part the convoy
managed to keep intact. Once we exited through the reserves gate, we headed for home.
Although, we at first thought of it as a working weekend, it turned out to be quite a good enjoyable one. The team have
worked well together and in real Club tradition new friendships were established. I wish to thank the following for making it a
good weekend: Pieter Erasmus, Alex van der Horst, Tony Polastrini, Johan and Jacky Stroebel, Alex Fladung, Natasha Beets,
Neels and Ria Bothma and last but not least Helen.
I believe that with this festival a good relationship was established between the organizers and the LROC and trust that we in
future will be able to assist again in its success.

TEMBE WORK PARTY AND AWAY WEEKEND
“We’ve got to have a dream if we are going to make a dream come true.”
Denis Waitley.
“Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless
contribution experience life’s deepest joy; true fulfilment.” Tony Robbins.
Writing articles have never been my forte (or love!), but I was told by my
old Afrikaans school teacher that the secret lies in starting with a strong
introduction to get the attention of the reader or listener! I do hope it is
strong enough!
As many of you that know me by now will appreciate, it has been a dream
of mine for a long time to get involved in conservation and my first trip to
Tembe was the beginning of this dream come true, and I sincerely believe
there is not another game park in Southern Africa that has more character
for realising such a dream.
This park is not nearly the size of Kruger, or many of the other well known
National parks like Kgalagadi or Etosha, but has so much to offer in its
simplicity and raw natural environment. So much for the first quote!
As for the second quote, this reflects directly on the attitude and character
of the people from the Land Rover club that have been sharing this dream
with me for the last couple of years.
Why do I say this?
Simply because working in Tembe does not always entail doing the bright
and eye catching tasks like game counting by helicopter and research
type of tasks, but sometimes ordinary simple tasks which we have to do
at home regularly as well. These include painting, cleaning, replacing light
bulbs and even installing new toilet bowls, and yet none of the members
blinked an eye when they were tasked the first night after arriving at
Tembe. A picture with no name is supplied to proof my point on this topic.
LROC News – June 2014
Page 4
I dare say, and this is based on the reactions from booking for the event, that the work week is more popular than the fund
raiser weekend!
Having said all the above, I may now report that, yes we have once again had a wonderful week/end in Tembe during the end
of April and beginning of May of 2014.
The game sightings were not as spectacular as in previous years, but this was directly as a result of the rain that has fallen
over the last months or so, which left the vegetation as lush as I have never seen it before. Another contributing factor was the
fact that the whole park had so much drinking water in little pans all over that the animals made less use of the drinking holes
than in the past.
Even so, I think that many members got surprised by some wonderful game sightings and experiencing elephant and lion very
close by, maybe sometimes a little close for comfort!
I have received some write-ups from members on their experiences this year and these will be prepared for the publication in
the magazine later on. To those that have not contributed, if you still want to do so, please let me have it as everything will be
used.
In conclusion I may just add that on my visit to Ndumo, which is incidentally a free trip for our “working” members as a gesture
of thanks for our efforts in Tembe, I met with the parks chief of Ndumo who requested me to arrange a work party for them as
well in the future!
Coming from within the park management itself, I consider this as a feather in the cap for our member’s selfless participation in
Tembe over the last three years.
Once arrangements have been made I will give more details and arrangement made for two groups to go down to KZN.
From a personal point of view I would just like to thank everybody from the club, from the work week as well as the fund raiser
participants, as well as Derek and Megan from the HO”s for their contribution and effort and help make this a wonderful
experience again.
Till next time.
Dick de Bruin
RANGIES TECHNICAL DAY
Sean Riley from the Gearbox Company had an array of transfer cases and differential stripped and laid out for members to
view. He explained the working of the CDL used in all Defenders, older Discos and Rangies, and also the locking differentials
on the Disco 3. Members asked all sort of technical questions which Sean answered professionally from all his years of
experience working on Land Rover drivetrains.
After the technical talk, braai fires were lit, and everyone had something to eat and drink.
RANGIES GET TOGETHER
Rangie owners and enthusiast had a great day at Philip Glyn’s plot just outside Benoni. 20 Rangies were parked in a line and
models from the 70’s through to the
previous model Range Rover Sport
span the line-up. People were
chatting and admiring the vehicles,
while the kids were having a ball on
the jumping castle. Around the braai
fires new connections were made
and old one’s picked up again. A
festive atmosphere and good
weather let to a day enjoyed by
everyone attending. We thank Philip
and his staff for all the hard work in
making this a truly memorable get
together.
Pieter Erasmus and Phillip Glynn.
