HOT TOPICS –September 11 Events
Following the events of September 11th, a number of enquiries have been made as to why a
hot topic was not created to deal with this event. It was felt that a number of resources,
including Gulliver databases, such as Infotrac Onefile and ANZ Reference Centre and news
resources were adequately dealing with the information. Marketing these databases to the
public on the strength of their collection has been embraced by many library staff. Brendan
Fitzgerald reiterated this in an email sent out shortly after September 11.
Listed below are a number of sites dealing with archives and alternative news resources to
the events.
Articles dealing with Anthrax, Biological Warfare and Islam will be added shortly.
Archives on September 11 Released
WebArchivist.org, in conjunction with the Library of Congress and The Internet Archive, has
announced the release of an archive of September 11th materials at
http://150.156.112.3/main.plx .
The site and its archives may be searched by keyword, browsed by category (press, portal,
government, etc -- the categories for browsing are on the same page as the keyword search)
or surfed. The surfing page highlights a few sites in the middle of the page, with the full index
of sites on the right side of the page
Islamic Studies, Islam, Arabic, and Religion

This site from Dr. Alan Godlas, professor of religion at the University of Georgia, gives
scholarly resources on Islam and related subjects. Perhaps not surprisingly, the page opens
with a short list of pieces related to terrorism, including Yusuf Islam's (nee Cat Stevens)
"Terrorism has nothing to do with Islam" and statements from scholars of Islam speaking out
against terrorism. The main body of the site, however, is given over to twelve sections of
annotated links, which span maps, art, women's rights, the Qur'an, history, and much more.

One of a number of Websites offered by the Australian Commonwealth Government, the
Science and Industry Portal offers easy access to a wealth of government information and
agencies. The Science and Industry Portal should be a boon to researchers and industry
professionals who work in (or are interested in working in) Australia as well as those living
elsewhere who want information on the state of their industry sector or research interests
in Australia. Plans are to expand the range of the site as funds become
available.
Canada Encyclopedia Now Available Online
The Canada Encyclopedia is now available free online at
http://thecanadianencyclopedia.com/ . A simple keyword search is at the top of the site's main
page or you can do an advanced search and like most things Canadian you get French and
English versions. Have a go at the Canucklhead quizzes and the interactive games.
Libweb

Libweb is an initiative of the University of California’s Berkeley’s digital library. It currently lists
6100 pages of libraries from 100 countries, including Australia. The site also allows the
chance to submit your own library to the list. Make your library known across the world!
Magportal

Search for the full text of magazine articles freely available online or browse by subject
category. Covers a wonderfully eclectic mix of publications - everything from Advanced
Manufacturing to Wired. You can also subscribe to a free newsletter, informing you of the
latest articles and of any changes to the site.

Nobel Foundation recently announced the winners of its six awards for 2001, the 100th
anniversary of the Nobel Prize. The United Nations and its Secretary General Kofi Annan
were awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. The Prize in Literature went to V.S. Naipaul "for
having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see
the presence of suppressed histories." Three Physics laureates were also awarded, and
the Nobel prize for Chemistry went to an international team of researchers.
Emergency Management Australia
The mission of the EMA is to reduce the impact of disasters and emergencies in Australia and
its region. For those interested in Emergency issues in Australia this site has oodles of
information including such things as “WHAT TO DO IF YOU RECEIVE A SUSPICIOUS
PACKAGE OR MAIL ITEM.”.

Australian Federation Fulltext database

Established by the University of Sydney, the Australian Federation Full Text Database
contains the debates and conventions of the 1890's leading up to Federation, including a
range of participants' accounts and other contextual material from the time. The Scholarly
Electronic Text and Image Service (SETIS) at the University of Sydney provides access to a
large number of networked and in-house full text databases, primarily but not exclusively,
source texts within the humanities.
Linen Hall Library

The Linen Hall Library in Belfast was established in 1788. Apart from being the leading
institution for Irish and Local Studies in Northern Ireland, it holds over 250,000 items in its
Northern Ireland Political Collection, the most comprehensive archive of the Troubles. An
online exhibition of posters, entitled Troubled Images, can be viewed from this site. Worth a
look at an historic moment in time.
