Barbara Neish Registrar 6 WELLINGTON SWIMMING ASSOCIATION CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT This past year has flashed by and so many of the things I had hoped to have been completed in my first year as Chairman of this wonderful Association seem so far from done, yet looking back there has been a huge amount achieved by swimmers, coaches, technical officials, volunteers and my superb team the WSA Council. Elsewhere in this report you will read of the success of the celebrations and invitational swimming event to recognise 100 years of swimming in Wellington; we were delighted to host a magnificent 2001 National Age Groups Championships and our regular round of WSA championships and events have all been a great success. These events do not just happen, they are the result of countless hours of support from a dedicated, enthusiastic and all too small band of our greatest supporters. On behalf of all the members of Wellington Swimming I thank them for their efforts and the quality of the end product. Thank you to the Clubs for their support of the swim meets in all the variety of capacities that you fulfil. Whilst we have been pleased with attendance at most WSA meets and the Club League. It was disappointing to note the numbers of entries at the Relay Championships and the Mary Dowse Trophy, moving events on the calendar is always a difficult exercise. This year I set out to get more input from the Club Delegates meeting and wish to thank them for their input into improving our sport. A small example is suggesting a move to 10 lane finals in the Wellington Summer Champs an idea which was very successful and allowed us to maintain the top level of competition by attracting many talented visitors. I look forward to more great ideas. We have also had a group working hard to promote the development of swimmers. Whether it was the teams that were selected to attend the Australian Age Groups, the Victorian State Champs, the inter centre meets or the Wellington Development squads the work to select, coach and manage all the elements of travel and bookings we have been a big success. There was one exception, in the cancellation of the Buchanan Cup inter centre meet in Nelson due to the late withdrawal of another Centre . We deeply regret the situation over which we had no control, however we have located a suitable "away meet" later this year to take the original team to, hopefully they will enjoy this replacement experience. I have been disappointed with the lack of progress on technical officials this year and feel at best we have maintained a rather precarious position. We have had some of our very good people working hard but have let ourselves down with poor controls and communication. A renewed focus on this area is proposed by the out going Council. It was with regret that we said farewell during the year two of our strongest supporters as officials in Veronica Gould and Alex Sutherland both of whom we wish all the best in pursuit of their other interests. We have recently completed a great deal of planning and development work to move us into the electronic age with the launch of our new web site. We trust you all will find the things you want far more easily accessed than ever before and we are looking forward to responding to your ideas on how to improve the sites usefulness through content and design. 7 We have begun a full review of the events available to swimmers on the WSA Calendar and are so far pleased with the current balance, except for some long distance events. There are however some minor gaps evident for the younger less skilled competitors, WSA Council does not see events at this level as its primary responsibility and asks interested Clubs to take the initiative to provide further opportunities. I am pleased with the continuing solid if unspectacular state of our finances. We are often asked to provide funding for individuals which is neither our role nor a financial reality given the funds held and more importantly our modest annual income levels. We are however determined to find opportunities, which build a healthy infrastructure for our sport. We will fund these opportunities for coaching, swimmer and technical officials' development where we can identify a certain long-term benefit for swimming. I am pleased we introduced a new away trip this year specifically for the senior swimmers (the Victorian State Champs), the swimmers development squads have been established and we have emerging plans for additional support for coaches. It has been a year full of many highlights. For me one, which was very special, was the announcement of Rebecca Perrott as the Wellington Swimmer of the Century, a truly deserved honour for a wonderful athlete and ambassador of our sport. Congratulations Rebecca. As I said at the beginning of this report, there has been so much done and yet there remains so much left to do. I wish to thank the Clubs, Coaches, Swimmers, Officials and our Council for your support, I look forward to working with Wellington Swimming to continue our drive to be recognised as the top Region in New Zealand Swimming. Murray Coulter SECRETARY'S REPORT Another busy year for the Council of Wellington Swimming Association. We are still trying to keep everyone happy but that seems to be an impossible task. 15 Meetings have been held this year from 6 th July 2000 to 17th May 2001. Attendance's have been: M Coulter 12, B Neish 14, P Edwards 10, R Harley 11, K Hudson 12, L Keatley 13, V Morton 14, G Foote 10, T Maker 10, N Sutton 7. 8 SELECTORS REPORT In January this year we sent a team of swimmers for the first time to the Victoria Champs in Australia. It was disappointing to all involved that the Buchanan Cup was cancelled The selectors have tried various ways to select Wellington teams and the nomination form method is the most satisfactory. The teams and results for inter-centre meets are recorded else where in this report. Congratulations to all those swimmers selected for these meets. Thanks also to all those people who have been on the management team or officiated at these meets. The Australian Age Groups in April continues to be an incentive for our swimmers and a memorable experience for those who attend this meet. There are still a number of swimmers who are trying for the Achievers Squad trip. It is great to see swimmers who have been selected for relay teams at national meets participate enthusiastically. Club league was a not so well patronised this year as we had only one heat for each event. Mana Swimco were the winners. Thanks must go to all race secretaries who have a difficult job ensuring all entries for national events meet the deadlines in a short space of time. Finally I would like to thank Viv and Sonja for all their work and support this year. Lynne Keatley Convenor of Selectors AWAY MEETS' REPORT As set out in detail in the various managers reports included in this annual report, the talented swimmers in Wellington teams again performed with distinction at away meets, both nationally and internationally. The international away meets were the Victoria State Championships held in Melbourne from 2-5 January 2001 and the 2001 Australian Age Group Championships also held in Melbourne from 19-23 April 2001, involving nine Wellington swimmers in valuable international experience. The national away meets included the New Zealand Winter Championships, the Central Region Representative Fixture, the New Zealand Junior Championships (held in Wellington), the Fairbrother Cup, the New Zealand Age Group Championships (also held in Wellington), the New Zealand Open National Championship and the 2001 New Zealand Age Group Division II Championship. The Buchanan Cup meet was cancelled by the Nelson Marlborough Swimming Association. The swimmers selected for the Buchanan Cup swam at the Kiwi West Carnival held in Palmerston North on 2 June 2001. Again, the support and commitment of swimmers, coaches and managers has been such as to ensure a successful year of Wellington away meets. R P Harley 9 CARNIVAL COMMITTEE REPORT 2001 This year the committee has strived towards the provision of a balanced programme for all ages and levels. The greatest difficulty has been encountered in the juggling of dates around the National events, the school holidays and pool availability. However we feel that a reasonable mix has been obtained, and very few alterations have been made for the coming year's programme. It is unfortunately becoming increasingly difficult to obtain officials to work at the meets and this is exacerbated by the greater number of meets being held, the decreasing number of officials moving up the qualification ladder, and the shorter "service period" now being given by parents. However, the WSA is indebted to those who do work at the meets, as well as the large number of people who work for the clubs and behind the scenes, for example the officials contacts and the tea people. I personally am indebted to the Race Secretaries for the huge workload they undertake, and the very workable "team situation" that we all enjoy. They have all been a pleasure to work with and deserve countless accolades from their clubs for their enormous contribution to the swimmers' progression and goal achievement. The highlight of this past year would have to be the hosting of the 2001 NZ Age Group Championships in March. We enjoyed the challenge of catering for a large group of high standard swimmers, and feel that our aim of providing an excellent meet for competition and enjoyment was achieved. Additionally the commemoration of 100 years of Wellington Swimming in October 2000 provided an opportunity for comparison and challenge, with swimmers from the past and some of the current Olympians being in attendance for competition and fun. An enjoyable weekend of swimming and social functions was organised and hosted by past and current committee members as a celebration of the occasion. Wellington Swimming does not have a major sponsor for the sport, but does enjoy support from a variety of business houses and trusts when requested. Much of this is attracted by clubs for their own competitions, and all swimmers are indebted to these people for their continued generosity. Wellington Swimming is still receiving generous support from UBIX Copiers, and as ever, we are most grateful for their ongoing assistance. Likewise, the assistance and co-operation of the staff at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre is invaluable, and we appreciate this enormously. The final thanks from WSA are directed to all the officials who work at meets; the club personnel who work for their members; the parents who encourage and support their swimming children; the coaches who instruct and enlighten the swimmers; the swimmers who persevere with this sometimes disheartening and sometimes exhilarating sport; the councils who provide the pools and the staff who operate them. In short - everyone who has anything to do with this wonderful water sport called swimming. Pam Edwards 10 Managers report from the NZ Winter Championships Dunedin August 23/26 2000. 32 young swimmers attended these Championships and did Wellington proud. The Team:- Damian Braddock, Jarrod Brown, Virginia Burroughs, Lucy Dunne, Andrea Fancy, Mark Finch, Alex Franks,. No medals in the relays but everyone who swam in them gave of their best. Records numbered 10:- Aleisha Keating 3, 17yrs 800 Free, 17yrs and Open 1500 Free. Damian Braddock 2, 14yrs, 400 IM and 800 Free. Jarrod Brown 2 Open 50 and 100 Breast. Robert Voss 3, 17yrs and Open 800 Free and the 17yrs 200 Free. Most swimmers swam at least 1 Personal best time. I would like to thank the swimmers, managers and coaches for their co-operation and support. It was a good meet despite the meet being run under Graham Price rules and not SNZ/FINA rules. I queried the withdrawal rule and was told the meet was being run under the 1998 AGM rules. I was assured the results were being sent to the Dominion and Evening Post, but a fax was also sent to both papers courtesy of Kay Fancy with a report of the records broken and the medals achieved. Thank you Wellington Swimming Association Council for allowing me to manage this team, once again they were a great bunch. Barbara Neish Central Regions Representative Meet Wanganui 14 October 2000 Assistant Manager Diana Tucker Coach Lynn Sherborne I am pleased to report that the Wellington Team was a delight to manage at the Central Regions Representative Meet. All swimmers performed their best on the day with many personal best swims recorded, and all were very well behaved. They displayed great Team Spirit especially in the relays that were very exciting. The Team swam so well that we managed to bring back to Wellington the trophies for 9&U, 10/11, 12/13, 14/15, 16&0 age groups. The Relay Trophy after winning all four relays and best of all we won the Overall Winner's trophy for the most points. So as you can see we had a clean sweep winning all six trophies. Congratulations to all the swimmers. 11 I would like to say what a wonderful bus service we had which ran very smoothly and on time. Shaun the driver was very supportive to the Team, he was present at the meet and on the way home he rang through to McDonalds so that they were prepared for 29 very hungry swimmers. He also went out of his way to drop some of the Hutt swimmers and parents at the Naenae pool nothing was too much trouble. It was good to see so many parents travel up to Wanganui for the day to support the Team. It would be true to say that it was a day of excellence for Wellington Swimming. The Team was comprised of four swimmers selected from qualifying criteria at the LabourWeekend All-Comers Meet. They were Jarrod Brown (TASS) Andrea Fancy (Capital), Sophie Robb (Watties Swim City) and Nathan Tucker (Watties Swim City). The Team left Wellington on the 31st Dec 2000 and flew direct to Melbourne where the swim meet was being contested. We arrived on time and travelled by taxi from the airport to the city as there was no arranged form of transport for the team. A decision was made to continue travelling by taxi for the remainder of the trip instead of hiring a car as the cheapest and easiest form of transport for a small team. Consideration was given to possibly using scooters or bicycles but this was deemed too stressful given the temperatures at this time of the year and the fact that we were staying in apartments uphill! The team was housed at the Manor House Apartments in South Yarra. All members of the team behaved in an exemplary manner at all times. It was a pleasure to be part of a group organised, disciplined and committed to gaining the best results possible at that time. Swimmers were able to accept the fact they were in a meet preparation phase on New Years Eve and staying in an area that was in high celebration mode. All athletes were punctual and ready to race on Day 1. Every athlete showed a professional attitude toward their individual race preparation and were particularly disciplined with regard to warm-downs after each race. We all had to be very careful with managing the heat and humidity at all times of the day. At 37. plus everyday, swimmers had to be vigilant with their hydration and fatigue levels. I felt that on the first day of competition the swimmers were feeling the stress of adapting to the heat, particularly in the evening finals session, but on subsequent days they seemed to handle the heat very well. All swimmers wore the Wellington tracksuit with pride and appeared tidy and professional at all times. I feel strongly that this trip was a very worthwhile and important part of our development strategy and should be continued. I wish to thank Wellington Swimming for the opportunity to take this team to Australia as it was a very valuable experience for me and the athletes Frank Tourelle Team Manager/Coach Results Medallists Andrea Fancy Jarrod Brown Bronze 200 Back Bronze 100 Breast, Finalists Sophie Robb Andrea Fancy Jarrod Brown Nathan Tucker 8th 50 Free, 8th 200 Free. 7th 400 Free 6th 400 IM 4th 50 Breast 10th 100 Breast. I think the results shown above speak for themselves as to the performance and achievement of the swimmers. Once again thank you to the Wellington Swimming Association Council for allowing me to manager this team. Sonja Braddock TIP TOP 2001 Australian Age Groups Championships April 19th-23rd I would like to thank the Wellington Swimming Association for selecting me as Coach/Manager for this first-class age group competition. The trip was a great experience for me as coach and a fantastic opportunity for our swimmers. As Wellington is currently a predominantly age group centre, I feel this meet is the foremost competition for our centre's swimmers before they move on to national teams. The incentive scheme that Wellington Swimming has put in place for selection and financial assistance to travel to this meet has allowed our best age groupers an excellent opportunity to test themselves in arguably one of the best age group competitions in the world. The Team, Kate Harvey, Aleisha Keating, Thomas Macdonald, Annie Nielsen, and Robert Voss. Uniforms Our black polo shirts looked great and played an important role in unifying our team. The swimmers alternated these polo's with their white talent ID shirts Travel It was beneficial for the team to travel to Melbourne two days before the meet started because it took the swimmers this long to loosen up and start feeling good in the water. Our estimated ten-minute walk to the pool was in fact a brisk 35 minute walk, so after the first day we travelled via a network of trams and on foot. On the third day, a deluge of heavy rain set in for the remainder of the meet, so after a team meeting the swimmers agreed to pay an additional $50 (approx.) extra per person and rent a sedan for the five remaining days. This was money well spent, as we then had transport to the pool and for shopping and eating, yet everyone still managed to get soaked in what was reported to be the worst rain in Melbourne in 25 years! 17 Kate Harvey Kate made two finals, placing 8th in the 200m Backstroke and 10th in the 100m Backstroke. She did three PB's and broke one Wellington Record in the 200m Backstroke. Aleisha Keating Swam PB's in her final two events. She made one final on the last day, placing 10 th in the 200m Butterfly, and taking the Wellington Record for the second time that day. Thomas Macdonald Swam two PB's. He made the finals of the 1500m Freestyle, placing 10 th, and broke both the 18 years and Open Wellington Records in this event. Tom had the misfortune of breaking out in an extremely bad rash under his armpits on the last day of the meet, and this impeded his performance in his last event. Annie Nielsen Annie didn't have a great meet, however she was just splits off all of her best times and she was focussed and raced hard. Her best placing was 18th. Robert Voss Robert swam poorly in all of his events, however he was focussed and committed, and I feel he had just tapered for too long and had already performed his best swims for the season at the NZ Age Group and Open Nationals. Final Thoughts Although the swimmers produced mixed results at this competition, which for most came at the end of a long taper for the big national meets, I feel that the experience for the whole team - including me - was invaluable. Our group was a pleasure to work with. Barbara Neish 19 Wellington/Hutt Zone Organizer's Report 2000/2001 Season This year the Zone has run fairly smoothly. At the AGM of the zone in October the Clubs present decided to trial the meet without any restrictions on the distances swum, although still limiting swimmers to 3 swims, also running the meet on a programme. These changes proved to be very popular and at the March meeting, it was decided to continue using the programme and leave the restrictions out. The March meet did not finish due to the pool not allowing us to swim past 9.00pm. This was due to many swimmers not bothering to turn up to the meet. Now swimmers are to be charged an entry fee when entering which will eliminate them paying at the door, therefore hoping cut down on the number of no shows. It is disappointing that some Clubs do not regularly attend the Zones, but overall the numbers are still very large. I look forward to another successful season with many swimmers achieving their goals. Kay Hudson Gold Coast Chairman's Report 2000/2001 Season The Gold Coast Zone has run ten carnivals this year. Three, at both the Tawa and Raumati Pools and four at Cannons Creek. In keeping with tradition, meets have included two Chocolate Carnivals, a Fireworks Carnival, the Woollahra Trophy meet, while the Paekakariki Shield relays were spread across three meets. The Matson Trophy, 100m freestyle handicap meet, also produced another night of exciting swimming. The Personal Best Trophy has been keenly contested during the 2000 calendar year. The top clubs were Tawa and Raumati with two wins each. Apart from the Matson trophy meet, every effort has been made to offer programmes and events that are suitable for new competitors as well as those wishing to update their times for Top 10 and National meets. With increasing numbers at Gold Coast meets we have continued to restrict swimmers to no more than three events (250m in total) or two events a 200 or 400 plus a 50m race. More recently it has been necessary to ensure clubs support the long established rule that only allows swimmers to compete in a 100m race, if they can swim 50m in that stroke, in less than 1 minute. The biggest challenge for the Gold Coast this year have been adapting the duties and zone responsibilities to accommodate the six clubs now in the region. The newer clubs have taken on board their responsibilities to the zone administration and in providing their quota of officials. It is great that all clubs now have a regular delegate at the Zone’s two monthly meetings. Warren Lane, the Mana Swimco delegate stepped down as Zone Chairman early in the year - this was a job I picked up when I became the new delegate. I would like to thank Warren for his contribution to the Zone. I would also like to Thank all the Club Delegates and especially the Zone Secretary, Maxine Dunkerley from TASS, and the Zone Treasurer Sandra Tennant from the Tawa Club. Our novice swimmers are again competing in the 12/U League, which continues to be a successful means of introducing them to competitive swimming. The main focus for our more established swimmers has been on good performances in the two Wellington championships, to carry us through to Junior Nationals. This year we added holiday swim schools to our training programme, and invited Neville Sutton and Jarrod Brown to run a breaststroke coaching session and demonstration for us. Both of these additions to our programme proved valuable, and we thank Neville and Jarrod for their input. On the more social side, our away trip to Palmerston North was enjoyable both competitively and socially. We also enjoyed having Australian swimmer Aleisha Eibl from Melbourne's Camberwell Club, train with us over the summer and compete at the Wellington Summer Champs (where she earned 18 points for herself). Our first club championships held at the Majestic Club pool were a great success, and our thanks must go to Barbara Neish, who gave us her time and expertise as starter on the night. Competitively, the year has been rewarding, with 12 of our 15 competitive swimmers qualifying for Junior Nationals. Frances Harley again stood out in her swimming achievements for the year, setting 9 Wellington records. As we are one of the smaller clubs, it was exciting for us to see our 11-year old boys take 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the 200m backstroke at Wellington Summer Champs - our first three-peat. Parents continue to gain experience and qualifications as officials with one more parent becoming a qualified time-keeper and another going on to become a qualified IOT. Congratulations to those parents, and thanks to all those who regularly serve as officials. A special thank you is due to Nin Roberts who has been a great asset to the team. She has not only assisted with junior swim coaching, but has also given our competitive swimmers great support. Her efforts as team masseur at swim meets have really been appreciated - our swimmers have loved it. We have also been developing a master's section of our club, which has been sending a team to North Island champs for the last 2 years, this year finishing 5th out of 35 clubs. This group also includes competitive tri athletes and recreational swimmers. As always, we owe our biggest thanks to our head coach Jeffrey Calder. He is absolutely committed to helping our swimmers fulfil their potential, and his vision is the driving force behind the club. Kristin Downey MANA SWIMCO CLUB REPORT The Club has had a challenging and successful year with the departure of Alan Paterson as Professional coach and the welcome replacement being Angela Morris-Jenkins. Mana Swimco has always enjoyed a very close working relationship with the Tawa Swimming Club and Angela's Tawa swimmers have combined with our squad to create a unique situation in Wellington Swimming whereby one coach is coaching swimmers from two clubs with those swimmers maintaining their own clubs identity. Mana Swimco has introduced Challenge Certificates this year which has proved very popular, especially with our younger swimmers. A Mana Swimco Team finished first in 2000 in the 12&U Inter Club League. The club had two swimmers in Winter Nationals, three swimmers at National Age Groups, eight swimmers at Junior Nationals and six swimmers at Division 2, which was Mana Swimco's largest Div 2 team ever. The club was well represented at three away meets last year. One team went to the Napier Aquahawks Meet, another went to Otaki and most of the squad plus several other club members entered the Nelson/Marlborough Champs in Blenhiem.Although the clubs membership has dropped slightly, the strength of the swimmers is definitely on the increase. Karen Fugle 33 TASS SWIMMING CLUB REPORT 2000/2001 has seen TASS continue to consolidate it's position as a competitive swimming club in the Wellington region. The club is growing steadily and this was clearly illustrated at the recent Wellington Relay Champs. This year we fielded 10 teams (including a golden oldies team) where as last year we only managed 3. 2001 saw us hold our inaugural Club Championships which involved racing for both swim club and swim school members. A very successful and rewarding day for all those involved, culminating in the presentation of age group medals for the swim club members. The club spirit and team spirit within the club has continued to grow. You will be able to tell that yourself by the volume of the support from the TASS corner, next time you are at a swim meet with us !!. Joanne Butler TAWA SWIMMING CLUB REPORT The past twelve months has seen the Tawa Swimming Club grow from strength to strength. Our Club has had many successful events this year The Club Disco held in the Clubrooms was a great night out for those who attended The Big Splash Carnival was a huge success for all the younger swimmers Tawa Long Distance Carnival Junior/Senior Development Swim Programme at the Marton Pool for swimmers aiming at National Competitions. Wellington Swimming Association Inc. Audit Report To the readers of the financial report of the Wellington Swimming Association Inc. I have audited the financial report. The financial report provides information about the financial performance of the association and its financial position as at 30th April 2001. Committee's Responsibilities The Committee is responsible for the preparation of a financial report which fairly reflects the financial position of the association as at 30th April 2001 and of the results of the operations for the year coded 30th April 2001. Auditor's Responsibilities It is my responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial report presented by the committee and report my opinion to you. Basis of Opinion An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relevant to the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. It also includes assessing: • the significant estimates and judgements made by the committee in the preparation of the financial report, and • whether accounting policies are appropriate to the association's circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed. I conducted my audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards in New Zealand except that my work was limited as explained below. I planned and performed my audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I considered necessary. I obtained sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial report is free from material misstatements, either caused by fraud or error. In forming my opinion I also evaluated the overall adequacy of information in the financial report, Other than in my capacity as auditor I have no relationship with or interests in the association. Qualified Opinion Control over the revenues prior to being recorded is limited, and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effect of this limited control. In this respect alone I have not obtained all the information and explanations that I have required as per all organisations of a similar nature. In my opinion the financial report fairly reflects the financial position of the organisation as at 30th April 2001. My audit report was completed on 10/06/01 and my qualified opinion is expressed at that date. G. H. Gould B.C.A. C.A 38
