UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS Junior ROTC Program Desert Hot Springs High School 65850 Pierson Blvd. Desert Hot Springs, California 92240 2008 -2009 Discipline Plan The Marine Corps Junior ROTC Program at Desert Hot Springs High School offers elective courses to those students interested in developing leadership skills and learning about the U.S. Marine Corps and the role the Corps has played in American history. All cadets and their parents are required to sign the class syllabus and core values statement which set forth the course requirements and procedures in great detail. For this reason, discipline problems are rare within the MCJROTC Program. All cadets are expected to adhere to the following regulations: 1. Attendance. All cadets must punctually report to class at their designed period unless they are ill or have some other legitimate excuse. Those cadets who report to the MCJROTC classroom after the bell marking the start of the period has run will be sent to the office to obtain a “tardy slip.” Academic excellence cannot be achieved in the MCJROTC Program or any other class without a good attendance record. The Instructor will request a meeting with the parents of any cadets who have numerous unexcused absences or who are frequently tardy to class. Twentyfive percent of the cadet’s final course grade is based upon class attendance. 2. Class conduct. All cadets are expected to address the Lieutenant Colonel Lewke and Master Sergeant Coates by either their respective rank or with the word, “Sir.” Cadets will stand up in class when called upon by the instructor. Cadets will not be allowed to talk during lectures unless called upon to answer a question. 3. Wednesday Uniform Inspections. All cadets are required to wear their issued uniforms on Wednesdays each week. Both males and females must adhere to Marine Corps grooming standards. If necessary, the instructor will provide male cadets with money to be used for haircuts. Twenty-five percent of the cadet’s final course grade is based upon uniform inspections and drill. 4. Tuesday and Friday physical training sessions. All cadets are required to wear their issued shorts and shirts for physical training. Twenty-five percent of the cadet’s final course grade is based upon participation in physical training. 1 5. Performance on Exams. Cadets will take a quiz each Thursday. The cumulative grades from these tests, along with the final exam at the end of the semester, will form twenty-five percent of the final course grade. Cadets who fail to meet these expectations will face the following adverse administrative sanctions and progressive discipline if their unsatisfactory conduct persists: 1. Verbal Counseling : Lieutenant Colonel Lewke or Master Sergeant Coates will conduct a private counseling session with any conduct who exhibits unsatisfactory performance or conduct; 2. Adverse Entry Into Service Record Book: Cadets who continue to display unacceptable conduct will be formally counseled by Lieutenant Colonel Lewke and a record of the counseling session will be recorded into the cadet’s service record book. 3. Conference With Parents: If no progress is observed regarding the cadet’s conduct, Lieutenant Colonel Lewke will request a meeting with the cadet’s parents or guardians to discuss the problem. 4. Non-Promotion With Peers: Cadets with long-standing discipline problems will not be promoted. 5. Barred from MCJROTC Field Trips: Cadets with long-standing discipline problems or poor grades in other high school classes will not be permitted to accompany the rest of the class on field trips throughout Southern California. 6. Barred from Receiving Special Awards or Summer Training. Cadets with long-standing discipline problems will not be eligible for special awards, MCJROTC college scholarships, or sponsorship for summer training. 7. Disenrollment from MCJROTC Program with Assigned Grade of “F.” As a last resort, non-cooperative and disruptive cadets will be expelled from the MCJROTC Program with a final course grade of “F.” --------------------------------------------------------------I have read, understand, and concur with the above “discipline plan” which will govern my son or daughter while enrolled in the Marine Corps Junior ROTC Program.
