BASIC HIGH SCHOOL MCJROTC PROGRAM OVERVIEW Background: Basic MCJROTC unit was activated in 1977 and is one of over 230 units in the U.S. sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. Basic MCJROTC has been designated as a “Naval Honor School” 17 times and has received state and national recognition and honors. The Senior Marine Instructor and Marine Instructor are retired Marines with over 50 years of combined military service. They are employees of Clark County School District and licensed by the State of Nevada to teach JROTC. International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program: Basic High School is a candidate for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Our students will engage in lessons using the IB Learner Profile, IB Command terms, the six IB Global contexts, and the five approaches to learning skills categories. Students will participate in one Interdisciplinary project per semester revolving around a central theme. Several times throughout the year we will be using the IB grading Criterions to determine a grade. All IB components will be introduced in class and referred to throughout the year. Please refer to IB’s website for more details on these topics. (http://ibo.org/myp) Uniforms and Activities: The United States Marine Corps provides all uniforms at no cost to cadets. However, these uniforms are government property and must be returned upon departure from MCJROTC. Cadets are responsible for the proper wear and maintenance of the uniform during the school year. The uniform may only be worn for officially authorized events and for the weekly uniform inspection. MCJROTC has 15 ranks and over 30 ribbons for cadets to earn for wear on their uniforms. Cadets are encouraged to participate in the many teams and activities including: Color Guard, Drill Teams, Youth Physical Fitness Teams, and Marksmanship (Pellet Rifle) Teams, JROTC Military Balls, parades and community service projects. There is a non-refundable $25 course fee to participate in MCJROTC. PE Requirement Waived: Successful completion of the first two years of MCJROTC satisfies the two-year Physical Education requirement for graduation. The third and fourth year courses are elective courses. Obligations for Participation: There are no military commitments or obligations for participating in Junior ROTC, but cadets completing two or more years of JROTC are offered accelerated promotion upon enlistment in the military or assisted with academy appointments and ROTC scholarships, if eligible. Program Benefits: - - Self-discipline, self confidence, and personal responsibility. Character building and sense of belonging. Upon successful completion of two years of JROTC, graduates may be nominated for accelerated promotion to the pay grade of E-2 upon enlistment in an active or reserve component of a military service. Military Departments may award the pay grade of E-3 for successful completion of three academic years of JROTC. Cadets who have completed three years of JROTC may be entitled to one year credit at some college ROTC programs. Graduates may apply for the Marine Corps PLC program (an Officer Commissioning program) during the summer prior to their freshman year of college. Cadets may apply to the military academies in a special JROTC nomination category of request college ROTC scholarships. Eligibility to travel out-of-state for Military Orientation Trips. Cadets are held to a higher standard of conduct than the average high school student. We expect more from our cadets! Student Eligibility: To enroll the student must: -Be a full time student attending a regular course of instruction at Basic High School. -Be a citizen of the United States, U.S. National, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence. - Be of good moral character as determined by Basic’s Principal and the Senior Marine Instructor. - Be fully, physically qualified to participate in regular physical education courses. - Receive Senior Marine Instructor approval for continued enrollment in subsequent years. (Cadets who fail to adhere to the expected standards of conduct, fail to correct poor behavior/conduct, and/or fail to develop their skills to assume duties/responsibilities as unit leaders may become ineligible to return). Cadets will be disciplined as follows: NO DRESS Physical Training 1st offense: Verbal Warning Instructor Note in Grade book 2nd offense: Teacher’s Detention (30 minutes before or after school in PT gear) 3rd offense: Parent Notification Letter, Unsatisfactory Notice Issued, could be ineligible for all MCJROTC activities/teams for present quarter. 4th offense: Parent Notification 5th offense: Will result in lower grade in MCJROTC and Cadet could lose the privilege to return to subsequent MCJROTC classes. They will also have opportunities to continue to develop marksmanship and physical training abilities. Cadets are expected to participate in supporting local organizations by performing drill routines, color guard details and competitive events throughout the year. Cadets are expected to understand and demonstrate by practical application Regulation Drill, Inspection Phases of Drill and Exhibition Drill in order to sustain the traditions of excellence of our Basic High School MCJROTC nationally recognized Drill Teams. All members are required to attend all scheduled practices and performances. Prior approval from the drill team advisor is required if a student needs to miss a scheduled practice. Three unexcused absences from practice will result in the team member becoming ineligible to participate in the next performance or competition. Students will start with 100 points. Points will be deducted for the following reasons: -2 points for being tardy -2 points for lack of participation -5 points for being absent PARTICIPATION/CONDUCT: 5 points for EXCELLENT participation; 3 points for GOOD/FAIR participation; 0 points for failure to participation. -5 points for RPC, suspension or truancy PREREQUISITE FOR ENTRY: - Senior Marine Instructor permission. - Concurrent enrollment in JROTC LE-1, LE-2, LE-3, or LE-4. –Maintain academic eligibility with a minimum 2.0 GPA -Maintain Satisfactory or higher Citizenship grades in ALL classes
