Unit 1
Unit Goals
Listening
- 80% mastery of identifying correct adjective placement, responding to questions asked
of you and listening to/respond to a 20-second introduction conversation.
Reading
-80% mastery of picking out cognates in readings, identifying information in a
conversation, reading an e-mail, and reading a short description for comprehension.
Writing
- Write 1 paragraph in Spanish, describing yourself and your interests. Writing another
paragraph in Spanish, describing your school day. Write 2 paragraphs in English,
explaining why learning Spanish is important and how it impacts your life today.
Speaking
- Hold a 30-second introduction conversation in Spanish.
Unit 2
Unit Goals
Listening
- 80% mastery on identifying information in a 45-second conversation about a student’s
morning before school. Students will be able to respond to the questions asked of them.
Students will be able to listen to directions in an airport and respond appropriately.
Reading
- 80% mastery on using graphics and images to comprehend readings, reading a
paragraph in Spanish that describes what someone did yesterday, reading a poem about
a student's first day of high school.
Writing
- Write 1 paragraph describing your daily routine. Write 1 paragraph about a past trip.
Write 2 paragraphs in English, explaining all the opportunities there are to experience
Spanish when traveling outside of the USA.
Speaking
- Hold a 45-second conversation in Spanish describing your daily routine and what you
did yesterday.
Unit 3
Unit Goals
Listening
- 80% mastery on identifying information from a spoken artwork critique, listening to a
newscast and summarizing the information, being asked questions about current events
and knowing how to respond.
Reading
- 80% mastery on reading a news article by using strategies such as scanning, reading
headlines, summarizing information from a reading, reading artwork critiques in Spanish.
Writing
- Write a 1-paragraph critique of a piece of art. Write a script for a newscast. In
English, summarize a 30-second news spot as seen on Univision.
Speaking
- Delivering a 1-minute summary of a recent current event in Spanish (newscast done in
groups). Providing a 30-second critique of a piece of artwork
Unit 4
Unit Goals
Listening
- 80% mastery on identifying preterite vs. imperfect uses in conversation, comprehending
a narrative about a student’s childhood, summarizing a story.
Reading
- 80% mastery on reading a 1-page narrative, interpreting a family’s story about a
wedding, reading a poem about a childhood experience.
Writing
- Write a 3-paragraph story about what life was like as a child. Students will use the
preterite and imperfect tenses. Write a 2-paragraph essay in English comparing and
contrasting extended family life in the USA versus Hispanic countries.
Speaking
- Deliver a 1.5-minute “speech” about your favorite family memory as a child.
Unit 5
Unit Goals
Listening
- 80% mastery on comprehension of a 1.5-minute dialogue between a waiter and a
customer, identifying what noun the direct/indirect pronouns are modifying in
conversation, understanding other’s opinions in verbal critiques.
Reading
- 80% mastery on reading a menu and reading a restaurant critique.
Writing
- Write 2-paragraph essay in Spanish, talking about a time when they tried a food they
didn’t like. Write a 2-paragraph essay in English, comparing and contrasting the cultural
aspects behind eating in the USA versus Hispanic countries.
Speaking
- Perform a 2-minute skit in Spanish, taking place at a restaurant.
Unit 6
Unit Goals
Listening
- 80% mastery on interpreting directions for staying fit, responding to friend who needs
advice, listening to advice about dieting.
Reading
- 80% mastery on reading a exercise plan, reading an advertisement for the newest
shampoo, reading a prescription from a hospital, and reading a 1-page story of one
student’s healthy lifestyle.
Writing
- Write 1 paragraph in Spanish, commanding a sick person what to do to feel better.
Write 1 paragraph in Spanish expressing a previous injury/sickness you’ve had. Write a
2-paragraph essay in English, discussing a health care issue in a Hispanic country.
Speaking
- Hold a 3-minute conversation with a friend about what you do to stay healthy.
