The Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) in Marine Biology is a reputed and a pioneering
Marine Academic and Research Institute in India which is actively engaged in teaching, research
and extension activities. It has made rapid strides in various facets of Marine Sciences, Marine
Technology and Oceanography. The eminent Scientist (Late) Prof. R.V. Seshaiya is the
Founder Director of this Centre and he modeled this Centre on lines of the Marine Biological
station of Woods Hole, USA in the year 1957. Following him, this Centre was nurtured by the
Formative Director (Late) Prof. R. Natarajan an eminent Malacologist, Cytologist, Geneticist
and Microbiologist.
In October, 1963, this department was recognised for its outstanding research
contribution by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as the Centre of Advanced Study in
Marine Biology and the Commission continues to extend generous assistance till-date and on
July 2010 the centre has elevated as faculty of Marine Sciences. Right from the inception
through the fledgling Marine Biological Station days, till now, this Centre has been the cynosure
of the scientific eyes the world over. The Centre has published more than 1,000 research papers
in scientific journals of both national and international repute. The Centre has also published
books, monographs, field guides, laboratory manuals etc. The centre has financially assistance by
the funding agencies such as, UGC, DBT, DST, MoEs, MoEn&F, DRDO and UNSECO. The
Centre has grown from strength to trength and established essential infrastructural facilities such
as Reference Museum, Running Water System for maintenance of marine organisms, Library,
Instrumentation facility, Browsing facility, Biotoxinology lab, GIS Laboratory, ENVIS etc.
About the conference
Recent scientific research has focused on natural products and potential bioactive
compounds that have possible health benefits beyond traditional nutritional value. Over billions
of years, nature has produced these organic molecules, which have varied uses, some of which
are yet to be determined. The discovery of new molecules can contribute to the development of
basic scientific concepts, lead to valuable drug oriented compounds and suggest possible new
pharmacological reagents. Newly discovered substances can even create new scientific fields.
Progress in these fields often contributes to the betterment of humanity. Notable examples
include the secondary metabolites from marine organisms, whose chemical structures are
completely different from those of terrestrial organisms. Marine metabolites often have unique
biological activities and thus deserve special attention. In this context this conference will
provide forum for discussing the medicinal prosperities of aquatic biotoxins and their application
in biomedical technology, with reference to epidemiology, biochemistry, experimental medicine,
cancer biology, neuroscience and nanoscience.
