Big Picture: How and why was the West settled and what issues were particular to that
region?
Objectives:
The student will:
1. Describe how industrialism and capitalism impacted the US economy and
spurred regional interdependence
2. Summarize the reasons settlers headed west and the routes they took.
3. Discuss their impact on Native Americans.
4. Explain why Texas developed as it did, and how they gained independence.
5. List reasons for and against the war with Mexico.
6. Describe the war with Mexico.
7. Identify territory acquired by the US in the antebellum period.
8. Summarize why relations between the US and Native Americans were strained.
9. Describe how the cattle industry boomed and identify what role cowboys
played.
10. Discuss the reasons for and goals of the Populist Movement.
