二零一五秋季汉语课程 2016 Spring Semester – Chinese Program

Course description and objectives

Chinese 3060 is the second semester of a two-semester advanced level of Chinese. You will earn minor credit in Chinese after completing 3040 and 3060. This course, oriented toward students who have completed Chinese 3040 at UNT (or the equivalent), is designed to reinforce the material learned in previous Chinese courses. By the end of this semester, your vocabulary and grammar knowledge will be expanded (approx.

180 new characters & phrases) and your communication skill in real-life situation will also be developed, in addition to these linguistic skills, you should have a deeper understanding of the diverse aspects of societies and cultures in Chinese-speaking areas of the world.

Course Requirement

Use of E-Mail

Instructors of third year Chinese (3040 & 3060) require students to use official UNT Eagle Mail for all communication. This means that your instructor will only respond to e-mail sent by their students from a UNT Eagle Mail address. Likewise, your instructor will only send email to your UNT Eagle Mail. Information about Eagle Mail can be found at the following Web address: http://eaglemail.unt.edu/ .

Use of Blackboard

Detailed syllabus, homework, assignments, grades report & other learning materials will be provided through Blackboard. To log in Blackboard, go to : https://learn.unt.edu/ . Use your EUID and password to log in.

A note on Incompletes: A grade of (I), Incomplete, is a non-punitive grade given only during the last one-fourth of a semester and only if a student (1) is passing the course; (2) has justifiable reason why the work cannot be completed on schedule; and (3) arranges with the instructor to finish the course at a later date by completing specific requirements that the instructor must list on the grade sheet. All work in the course must be completed within the specified time (not to exceed one year after taking the course). This process must be initiated by the student. The official request form must be signed by the student, the instructor, and the dept./division chair. If all conditions are not met and all parties do not approve, no grade of Incomplete will be given. Please consult the appropriate UNT Catalog and an academic advisor for additional information.

Absences and attendance policy

Regular attendance is required. Repeated unexcused absences and tardiness will affect your grade significantly. Leaving class before the end of the period will be considered an absence. Each student is allowed a maximum of three (3) absences, whether excused or unexcused, without penalty. After three absences, the attendance grade will suffer in percent. After the twelfth absence, a student will receive a failing grade for the entire class.

The following 3 cases explained below are considered excused absences:

1. Absence due to participation in a sponsored activity:

Absences due to participation in sponsored activities must be approved in advance by the chair of the Department of World Languages,

Literatures and Cultures and by your academic dean. Within 3 days after the absence, you must obtain authorized absence cards from the

Dean of Students for presentation to your instructor.

2. Absence for religious holidays:

Absence due to the observance of a religious holiday is authorized only if the religion is officially recognized by the University and you have notified your instructor of the date of the absence within the first 15 days of the semester. Notification must be in writing, with receipt of the notification acknowledged and dated by your instructor.

3. Absence due to illness, family emergency, etc. :

3

二零一五秋季汉语课程 2016 Spring Semester – Chinese Program

Absence due to illness, death in the family, or other emergencies will be authorized ONLY if you contact your instructor immediately AND if you provide proof that the absence was unavoidable (a physician’s statement, accident report, obituary, service bulletin, etc.) within 3 days after the absence.

As to homework and quizzes, if an absence is excused because of 1 or 2, the NEXT homework/quiz grade will count double and only double once. If the absence is excused because of 3, the student can turn in any assignment/take a quiz at a later time agreed to by the instructor. If the absence is not excused, the student will receive a grade of zero (0) for any homework assignment due that day and/or for any quiz/exam given that day.

Homework Policy

Homework will be given regularly, contributes toward consolidating your language skills and reinforces classroom learning objectives. Your homework includes:

Exercise Workbook (Lesson 5 – Lesson 9): 3pt each, 15pts total (5 lessons) .

Character Workbook (Lesson 5 – Lesson 9): 1pt each, 5pts total (5 lessons) .

Turn in homework on time will help you keep a good grade. Written assignments will be due at the beginning of class on the assigned due day.

10% of the current homework grade will be taken off for 1 day late. Turn in the current homework on homework correction day for the first time will give you 70% of your homework grade. No late homework correction will be accepted. On some occasions, written assignments will be collected and checked by your instructor; on other occasions the material assigned will be discussed and corrected in class. Your written homework must be neat and legible. Please do NOT use red pen or pencil. Homework will not be accepted after the beginning of the class for which it has been assigned and must be submitted in person by you. Assigned pages from the Workbook and the Character workbook must be removed from the workbook and stapled before turned in to the instructor.

The assignments will be checked on the due date (see calendar). The written correct answers will be provided through Blackboard. You are expected to turn in your homework on time. Any incomplete homework or late homework will result in partial or no credit for homework grade as showed:

Your homework score will be converted into a percentage within the Homework category (worth 20% of your overall grade).

Oral Report

Oral report will be assigned in video class of each textbook lesson to a group of two students. You can choose your partner or accept assigned partner by your instructor. Oral report usually happens on the last class of each lesson (see calendar below).

Quiz Policy

There are 2-5 pop quizzes to help students finish preview and 10 quizzes help strengthen the knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. The lowest vocab/grammar quiz point will automatically drop when counting for the final score. The students will have chance to make up an alternative vocab/grammar quiz covering the same material from missed quiz on next quiz date to get up to HALF of the score of the missed quiz. It is therefore imperative that you keep up with your studies on a daily basis. If the student does not take this opportunity, the missed quiz will be counted as a zero.

Unit Tests

Unit tests will cover vocabulary and grammar structure of all material studied through the last class before test day. All tests will be announced and will include: 1) listening comprehension, 2) vocabulary, 3) grammar, 4) writing, 5) reading, and 6) culture. Tests will reflect everything covered in class or assigned as homework. Note that you may not leave the classroom during the test. There will be NO make-up tests unless cleared with the instructor (for details, see Attendance above).

During test session students may leave after finish the exam, but under no circumstances will a student leave class and return to finish the exam.

No small translators, dictionaries or any electronically device are permitted. According to the UNT Student Guidebook page 19: "cheating on examinations and quizzes is dishonest." Please refer to the Student Guidebook for a complete description of cheating and plagiarism. The mere suspicion of cheating will be grounds for receiving a zero on any examination, paper, or project.

Final Exam

Final exam will be comprehensive. Taking the Final Exam is mandatory to receive a passing grade in this course. An alternate final exam is given

ONLY to students who have an exam conflict. Appeals to reschedule a final exam must be made to your academic dean before the deadline.

Extra credits

You can receive extra credit points, which will be added to your participation grade for the following activities:

Bi-weekly Chinese cultural activities (calligraphy, tea ceremony, Chinese painting, etc.)

Bi-weekly conversation tables

Chinese Movie Series in the Foreign Language Building. Sign in at each screening you are able to attend.

Attend and sign in for on-campus activities related to Chinese culture (lectures, festivals, etc.) officially sponsored by the CSSA or other organization.

You can earn up to 4 extra credits by attending these activities. For more information please see Cultural Activity of 2016 Spring.

Class Participation

Participation is an essential foundation for learning a language. Consistent and constructive participation is expected from all students.

Attendance is critical in such a course, as progress suffers when assignments and daily contributions to class work falter. There will be varying amounts of repetition of the drills from your work text. Cellular phones and computers can ONLY be used under instructor’s guidance,

5

二零一五秋季汉语课程 2016 Spring Semester – Chinese Program otherwise cellphone must be kept out of sight. If it is visible to the instructor in inappropriate time, you will receive a zero grade for participation on that day.

Keeping records

Students must keep all returned graded materials until the end of the term. In case of grade disagreement, it will be the student’s responsibility to show the graded materials.

Student Behavior in the Classroom

Student behavior that interferes with an instructor’s ability to conduct a class or other students' opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities to consider whether the student's conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. The university's expectations for student conduct apply to all instructional forums, including university and electronic classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The Code of Student Conduct can be found at www.unt.edu/csrr .
