7th Grade English—Course Syllabus Instructor: Mrs. Sara Carpenter Room: 214 Phone: 436-2261 E-mail: sara_carpenter@tricounty.k12.mn.us COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will be reading literature selections of short stories, poetry, and drama from class anthology. The formal study of grammar needed for language mastery will be introduced, and vocabulary will be worked on throughout the year. Basic skills of listening, speaking, writing, and reading will be included as preparation for basic standard expectations. Students will prepare for the Reading MCAIII test throughout the year. Required texts: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (in the Spring) - Novel Prentice Hall Literature—Literature All-in-One Literature Workbook Vocabulary for Achievement – Workbook Needed Supplies: Notebook Pen/Pencil AR Folder Binder or Folder for handouts *Failure to bring these items to class will result in a student retrieving items from locker and receiving a tardy in the process – 3 tardies = a detention. Units of Study: Literature (drama, short story, and poetry) Novel Study Vocabulary Grammar: DOL (Daily Oral Language) Writing: Focus on essay writing Daily Activities: Daily activities will include, AR, vocabulary, grammar, journaling, reading from literature book, class discussion, and correcting small assignments and quizzes. Weekly assignments: Monday: Journaling, Grammar, assign Vocab. lesson (due Thursday – tests are every 2 lessons); Tuesday – Thursday: Literature Book; Friday: Grammar quiz, AR reading in class Classroom Requirements: Be in seat when the bell rings. Be prepared with text, notebook, and pen. If you are unprepared, you are tardy. No food or drink (water may be acceptable). Treat teacher and class members with respect. No passes out of class unless work is done. No cell phones or music devices. Respect others and their space. Raise hand and no unnecessary talking. Writing Guidelines: Handwritten work will be accepted if it is double-spaced and neat. Typed work must be done in 12 point, double-spaced, Times New Roman font. Students who plagiarize will receive a “0” for that assignment. Homework Policy: Must be neat and handed in on time. Students are allowed two days per absence for make-up work. (Same policy as in student handbook.) After that time, a zero will be given. NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to ask for makeup work. Make-up work will be in the Absent Work basket for you to pick up, do, and hand back in. Make-up Tests: Any test that needs to be made up must be done after school during tests/make-up time, not during regular classroom hours. Grading: Tests – Literature unit tests, major written work, Vocabulary Quizzes - grammar and literature Homework includes work done either in class or outside of class. Accelerated Reader meeting all goals set at the beginning of each quarter I have read and understand the classroom’s policies for English 7.
