Oral Communication for Health Care Workers
Course Description:
This course is designed for employees who are currently working in a health
care setting, are non-native speakers of English, and need further
opportunities to develop proficiency in communication skills to be used in a
variety of health care settings. Emphasis will be placed on listening and
speaking skills, specifically pronunciation, appropriate use of medical
vocabulary, and use of currently accepted abbreviations. Clarity,
comprehension, and appropriateness in communicating with patients and all
members of the health care team will also be emphasized. In addition,
students will learn word elements (prefixes, roots, suffixes) for basic
medical terminology to identify and describe common diseases, symptoms,
procedures, and lab tests.
