Oral Communication for Health Care Workers Course Description: This course is designed for employees who are currently working in a health care setting, are non-native speakers of English, and need further opportunities to develop proficiency in communication skills to be used in a variety of health care settings. Emphasis will be placed on listening and speaking skills, specifically pronunciation, appropriate use of medical vocabulary, and use of currently accepted abbreviations. Clarity, comprehension, and appropriateness in communicating with patients and all members of the health care team will also be emphasized. In addition, students will learn word elements (prefixes, roots, suffixes) for basic medical terminology to identify and describe common diseases, symptoms, procedures, and lab tests.
