The User’s Guide is designed to make visiting our library more convenient by providing basic library use policies to our patrons. This Guide introduces you to this library’s collection, services, staff, policies and procedures. It is NOT a guide to legal research and does NOT contain a detailed description of all that the library contains. In 1978, the library was built by the Shanghai Maritime University in MinSheng Road campus, which has four floors and 4,661 square meters. In 2007, SMU moved to Lingang New City in the Pudong New District of Shanghai. The new library has 7 floors and is 40.2 meters high. The total construction area is 46,425 square meters. The new library has 17 reading halls and 6 study rooms and 3,500 seats are available for readers. The electronic reading room is equipped with more than 461 computers . The library is open 93hrs per week. The SMU library operates the website of International Maritime Information and publishes Maritime Review (monthly), Logistics Digest (quarterly) and Report on Logistics Technology Develepment of China (annually). Moreover, it also establishes Institute of Scientific and Technical Intelligence of SMU,Shanghai International Maritime Information Center (SIMIC) and SMU Logistics Information Institute. The library has a collection of books in the fields of maritime law, logistics, maritime management, language and literature, business economy, electronics, computers and other areas of books and electronic publications, etc. The total collections of our library amounted to 1.5 million volumes (books and bound volumes of periodicals), 30 000 foreign language books, 280 kinds of foreign periodicals and 7 kinds of English news papers included. The library subscribed abundant e-resources, include 62 platform and 208 databases.. Readers can use them through our website www.library.shmtu.edu.cn. Mission: To meet the needs of education and research, support the sustenance of the first –class maritime university and provide a highly qualified services for China Maritime Industry. Guidelines: Humanity, cooperation, research and development Vision: To become a high level information base and research center in maritime and logistics literature. To achieve this, the SMU library will continue to preserve a universal collection and make domestic and international cooperations to increase the information and research services level for China maritime and logistics industries. -4- Library Regulations 1. Fines are charged on late return of books. Renewing Books Books may be renewed a limited number of times via OLIS if they have not been reserved by other readers. Fines Fines accrue on overdue books at ¥0.10 per day, per book. For lost and damaged items, patrons are charged for replacement costs. COMPUTERS IN THE LIBRARIES Computers with access to Internet are available in various locations. Some libraries offer wireless access and laptop connections:Ask the library desk for details. - 11 - Reservations Use the library online public catalogue (OPAC) to reserve any items which are out on loan. Identify the item using the standard search and then ‘request’. You can check your own library record to find out when the book becomes available. Reading Service The new library has 17 reading rooms and 3,500 seats are available for readers. The electronic reading room is equipped with more than 418 computers . The reading service time is total 93hrs every week. - 12 - Document Delivery The Document Delivery Service allows registered users to request items which are not available in any SMU Library. Books, journal articles, reports, conferences, theses, standards and patents can all be obtained nationally . The publication must be needed for research or coursework. Information literacy is more closely tied to course-integrated instruction but it extends far beyond coordination between the reference librarian and the individual faculty member. Even a cursory review of the Information Literacy Competency Standards will show that there is much more to information literacy competence than library-related research. Students must demonstrate competencies in formulating research questions and in their ability to use information as well as an understanding of ethical and legal issues surrounding information. This requires a campus culture of collaboration and focus on student learning. - 15 - COPYING To the extent that the copyright law allows, you can make photocopies of library materials.Photocopiers are available at most of the libraries.Pre-paid copy cards can be purchased at vending machines and may be used at any on-campus libraries. Information products The website(www.simic.net.cn) is auspiced by Shanghai International Maritime Information Center (SIMIC). Logistics Digest is a quarterly journal and the amount of its circulation is 1500 per quarter. - 16 - Maritime Review is a monthly journal and the amount of its circulation is 3000 per month. Shipping information news is a newsweekly. The amount of Shipping information news's circulation is 3000 per week. Rules Loan/Return Valid Identification All Patrons must present a valid SMU library card to check out items. The maximum borrowing volumes for one card is up to 8 or 15 items at one time according to each category of borrower. Borrowers are responsible for the return on time and in good condition of all items. The due date is provided for all items borrowed and is the notice of the date by which items must be returned or renewed. Renewals Books may be renewed once. You must renew the books before the due date. The user may renew the books through the online catalog by calling up his or her personal record and indicating which item(s) should be renewed. But if you have outstanding charges or overdue items over a certain limit, you will not be allowed to do this. Checkout Step 1. Search the online catalogue, find the call number of the book you want and make sure its location. Step 2. Check out the items at circulation desk with your library card. Returning Books Books that were checked out in different locations may be returned to the Return Counter. When the library is closed, you may deposit your returns in the Book Drop Bin. Loss Or Damage You are responsible for all books checked out on your record and should point out noticeable damage to books before checking them out. Library books that are returned damaged will be assessed a service charge based on the cost of repairing it. If the book is lost, you can buy a new book to be a replacement or pay money. - 17 - International Maritime Research Library The seventh floor of the Shanghai Maritime University Library (Rooms A728, A732) is designated “THE INTERNATIONAL MARITIME RESEARCH LIBRARY”, It has more than 30,000 books in the disciplines of Ports Management, Shipping, logistics, Maritime Policy and law, Merchant marine and Nautical Sciences, Ocean Science and Engineering and other related areas. It is officially opened for use by both local and foreign graduate students in October 2011.
