Concurrent Credit Syllabus
BSU Course Number and Title:
Lab (4 credits)
CHEM101 and CHEM101L, Essentials of Chemistry I and
Course Description: A grounding in major principles of general chemistry including atoms,
nomenclature, molecular structure, bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, matter, acid & bases,
equilibrium, and nuclear chemistry. No prior knowledge of chemistry is assumed. This course
includes the application and exploration of these principles and techniques in the laboratory.
This course offers concurrent credit (4 total credits) through Boise State University. It will
prepare a student for entry into CHEM 111 at BSU.
Credits: 3 credits for class work plus 1 credit for lab work.
Course Prerequisites: Algebra II, Biology
Instructor: Carole Cox
ccox@parmaschools.org
722-5115 Ext.4
Course Dates: August 2015 – May 2016
Course Location: Parma High School, Classroom (Rm 04) & Lab (Rm05)
Text: Modern Chemistry by Davis, Frey, Sarquis, Austin: Holt, Rinehart and Winston Inc.,
2006.
Additional Materials: Binder, composition book (use as a lab notebook) and calculator
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:
 Review of math and calculator skills needed for chemistry
 Analyze data or models for trends and relationships - use data or models to make
meaningful conclusions or draft hypotheses and make predictions.
 Use of the metric system, significant figures and scientific notation
 Articulate an understanding of the particulate nature of matter. Understand atoms,
element, molecules and compounds
 Relate the basic structure of atoms and molecules to their chemical properties and
behavior.
 Calculate quantities of reactants, products and heat in chemical reactions
 Utilize the periodic table to predict physical chemical properties of elements
 Identify the forces holding atoms together as molecules
 Make calculations of solutions, including colligative properties, titrations, pH and
buffers.
 Have an understanding of chemical kinetics, equilibrium, and redox reactions
 Describe the three basic types of radioactive decay and balance nuclear
equations.(Optional)
BSU Concurrent Credit Course Syllabus
POLICY & PROCEDURES
Grading (Subject to Adjustments): Students will be graded on daily assignments, lab
write-ups and exams. The overall grade is determined with the following percentages:
Homework .....25%
Labs …………25%
Quizzes/Exams ...........50%
Overall grading scale:
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F below 60%
Homework: Homework is required and is necessary to understand the material presented in
class. If you have an excused absence on the date the homework is due, you may turn it in the
next time you come to class and receive full credit for the assignment. Late homework will be
accepted for less credit.
Labs: The students will physically manipulate equipment and materials in order to make
relevant observations and collect data; use the collected data to form conclusions and verify
hypotheses; and to communicate and compare results and procedures.
Make-Up Work & Late Assignments:
 Assignments will be posted on the board each day.
 Late assignments will have a 25% reduction with each day it is late.
 If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out assignments missed.
 Make up work missed due to illness, school function or any other “excused absence” will be
due the next class period without a reduction in grade. Work missed due to truancy cannot
be made up.
 Labs must be made up in a timely manner
 Late assignments will not be accepted after a student has taken the relevant exam.
EdLine Webpage:
Your instructor will be using Edline to post announcements, powerpoints, resources and to keep
you and your parents/guardians informed throughout the year.
Exams:
 It is your responsibility to make up missed exams upon returning to class after an
absence. (This must done in a timely manner or you will receive a zero score for that
exam.)
 Your lowest exam grade will be dropped at the end of each semester.
 A semester final and a year-end final exam will be given.
Labs: BSU allows students to miss only one lab in the year. More than one zero on a lab
during the year will result in a failing grade through BSU’s concurrent credit.
BSU Concurrent Credit Course Syllabus
Tardiness: Parma High School policy for tardiness will be followed.
Cheating & Collaboration: Cheating, plagiarism, copying or other forms of dishonesty will not
be tolerated. All students involved in such activities will receive an automatic grade of “0” for
that particular assignment.
Academic Honesty: Important!!! Students in this course are required and expected to
demonstrate academic honesty in all work. This requires that you know and adhere to the
BSU Student Code of Conduct, found at
http://www.boisestate.edu/osrr/scp/student_code.html.
Cheating (or any form of academic dishonesty) will not be tolerated. Students that violate
the standards set by the university will be reported to the Office of Student Rights and
Responsibilities and sanctioned by the terms outlined in the Code of Conduct.
BSU Concurrent Enrollment:
4-Credit Course – Pay for class at the $65 per credit rate ($260 total). There are opportunities
for financial aid. (FYI - The regular rate for BSU credit is $273 per credit!)
You will earn a letter grade on a Boise State transcript.
