Wichita went from a trading post and cowtown to one of the major mid-sized cities in the nation. The city’s boundaries encompass 110 square miles and the city boasts a population of 545,220 in the metro area. Wichita is known as the “air capital” due to the numerous contributions to the aerospace industry. Cessna, Bombardier Aerospace, Learjet and Raytheon supply more than half of the world's general aviation and military aircraft. The city of Wichita is doing very well economically because of excellent jobs and salaries, below national average costs, short commute times, arts and attractions. Wichita has developed a solid foundation upon which to build the future. Being in the heart of the United States we experience all four seasons. You will find the average monthly temperatures below. In 1926 the college became the Municipal University of Wichita, the first municipal university west of the Mississippi. After 38 years as a municipal university, WSU again changed its status July 1, 1964 to Wichita State University. Now, Wichita State University is one of the six state universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. Wichita State's location in the largest city in Kansas enhances the traditional classroom experience. Students enjoy the economic and entertainment benefits of a big city with the small town friendliness, while local residents enjoy cultural and athletic activities on campus. WSU is a NCAA Division I institution and fields teams in tennis, cross-country, basketball, track, golf, baseball, volleyball, and softball. The 330-acre campus is modern and accessible and at the same time retains the flavor of the University's 105-year heritage. More than 60 pieces of sculpture by internationally known artists adorn the campus. With enrollment at nearly 15,000, WSU has students from almost every state as well as 100 foreign countries. Approximately half of the students at WSU attend full-time, while the remainder is part-time students. Many take advantage of gaining work experience through WSU's "Metropolitan Advantage". In this unique program the students learn how their studies apply with real world experiences that give them the advantage they need to compete in a global career market. - - 10 DIRECTIONS TO WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY From the North: Take Interstate 135 south to 21st Street and turn left (east) to Hillside. From the South: Take Interstate 135 north to 21st Street and turn right (east) to Hillside. From the East: From Kansas City take Interstate 35 south to K-96 exit; take K-96 west to Hillside exit; go south on Hillside to 21st St. From the West: From Wichita Mid-Continent Airport take Airport Road to Kellogg (US Highway 54). Take Kellogg east through downtown. Exit at Interstate 135 North and go to 21st Street and exit right (east). Take 21st Street east to Hillside. Wilkins Stadium (Softball): Between Oliver and Hillside on 21st Street turn south on Perimeter Road; proceed to stop sign; turn left then take first right. Coleman Tennis Complex (Outdoor Tennis): From 21st Street and Hillside, go south on Hillside to 17th Street, turn east. Go to Harvard Street, turn left. Turn left on Perimeter Road, complex is on the left. - - 11 Genesis Racquet Club (Indoor Tennis): From 21st Street and Hillside, go east on 21st Street to Rock Road, turn right. Go approx. 3/4 of a mile, the Genesis Racquet Club is just north of 13th Street on the west.
